After four years on the air, ABC has decided to pull the plug on Ugly Betty. There won’t be a fifth season but will longtime fans get a true series finale?
Ugly Betty debuted in 2006 and follows young Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) as she navigates her way through the world of high-fashion, working at the trendy magazine Mode. Others in the cast include Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Becki Newton, Mark Indelicato, Michael Urie, Vanessa Williams, and Ashley Jensen.
After being a modest hit for its first two seasons, the series’ viewership dropped to an average of eight million viewers and a 2.8 rating in the 18-49 demo last year. That would usually put a series “on the bubble” but ABC gave it an early renewal. It was pretty clear that the network wanted to try to keep it going to accumulate more episodes for the syndication package.

The network assigned the series to a Friday night timeslot this season, hoping that the loyal fans would follow it there. Not many did. After cancelling Eastwick, they moved Ugly Betty to a better slot, on Wednesday nights. The ratings haven’t been very good there either.
The show’s fate seemed essentially sealed by Ugly Betty’s syndication deal. While episodes of The Mentalist and NCIS: Los Angeles sold for about $2.2 million each in syndication, Ugly Betty episodes have been licensed to the TV Guide Network for “a low six figures.”
Today, the network and production team made a joint statement, saying, “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

I am so sad! I love Ugly Betty. I didn’t even know it was cancelled until today when I was wondering why I couldn’t find anything on a new season. I think there should be a movie too.
I’d like to see Betty become chief editor of Mode, like she dreamed when she bumped her head. Ugly Betty shouldn’t finish here! 🙂
DO NOT cancel ugly betty please…I want to see when daniel n betty realize that they love each other n get married n back to MODE.for willhemina,she can married connor n be happy with all the money they have.I want an HAPPY ENDING for every one…
Its would be rily nice if betty and Daniel could be together…They will make a nice couple.
Yes, there could be a movie, to show Betty’s settled well in London after she leaves The U.S & maybe her love life and a happy ever after could be shown, & Justin’s life could have more to it than just a “gay relationship” maybe his and his boyfriend’s lives , could hit something successful like they both get streamed to a good carrier even in fashion and the lives of Others could be augmented and shown , like all is well!!! Finale wasn’t enough , it’s still unsettling !!!!!!!!!!
I cant believe Ugly Betty is being cancelled. My daughter and I religiously watched the show and looked foward to it every week. It was are mother daughter moment!! I really enjoyed the show and hope they atleast come back and give a 2 hr episode as a final recap of everyone’s lives.
I am so sad its being cancelled. I love the show and the final episode is not satisfactory enough. I would love to see Betty be happy with Daniel. I hope they change there minds and do make a fifth season or at least a movie .
OMG i actually can’t believe that, i just thought they hadn’t aired season 5 yet or they were still filming it. =( i don’t want Wilhelmina running mode, because last time she run it the company went bust. i want Daniel to go back and run it with Alexia, i also want betty to finally get into a serious relationship with someone (Daniel) i couldn’t watch it on the tv coz i never got chance to with the amount in my family. ive always watched it online, what else am i gonna watch =(

I am really shocked. I just started to watch ugly betty a moth ago, living in the Netherlands so i just watched the serie on the internet, and i’m halfway of season 4 and now realize, this may be it.. thats a bummer. i loved the show although couldnt watch it when it aired on american tv but have now caught up on it and i loved it! truelly wish it wasnt cancelled and that another season will blossom soon 🙂
It will be really nice if there is a movie , but ofcourse Betty and Daniel must be together as a couple , and i would like to see Betty`s adventures in London .
