While Nurse Jackie has been renewed for a fourth season, Showtime has decided that they’ve had enough of their other Monday night comedy, United States of Tara. The latter TV series has been cancelled after three seasons.
Starring Toni Collette, United States of Tara revolves around a suburban wife and mother who suffers from multiple personalities. Others in the cast include Brie Larson, John Corbett, Keir Gilchrist, and Rosemarie DeWitt.
Collette has been nominated for three Emmy awards for the role and won in 2009 for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. Debuting in January of 2009, the TV series was created by Diablo Cody and was based on an idea from Steve Spielberg.

Tara’s rating have been sliding for awhile so the cancellation isn’t actually a big shock. Last season, Tara averaged more than 550,000 viewers while season three to date is down more than 40%, averaging about 325,000.
In addition to tonight’s, there are three episodes left in season three. The series finale is set to air on June 20th and is titled “The Good Parts.”
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that there won’t be a fourth season or was it time for United States of Tara to end?

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!! I absolutely LOVE this show. As much as I love ‘Nurse Jackie’, in my opinion, ‘U.S. Of Tara’ is so much more fantastic! Wow..Showtime…this is INSANE!! Tara will be extremely missed!
I love this show and I’ll tell you what went wrong: Showtime didn’t promote or market it! I am an ardent fan and I started searching “when will the new season start?” online a week ago and was SHOCKED to learn it already had. There are serious balls-being-dropped when even your fan-base does not know the new season has started…
To the cast & writers & crew: you are amazing! I hope a different network will pick up this outstanding show.
To Showtime: don’t leave us hanging! Too many unanswered questions. C’mon!!
I think its a huge mistake to end this quality show. Tara and Nurse Jackie and the Big C are the only shows on TV with females over 40 as the stars and they are all really good. People are cancelling cable because of the recession. I don’t think Showtime takes that into consideration.
According to everything I’ve found, it’s only THREE episodes left. Not 8. Don’t know where you got your information.
I’m so disappointed in this decision though. This is one of the best, most original shows that deserves a tight ending and it won’t ever get that.
Laura » Thanks for the catch, was looking at April.
The acting of Toni Colette is outstanding. Since the start. I like the way that the this Tv-show, shows “normal” family life, without any major clichée and/or oversensual drama (like in grey’s anatomy or other shows..) despite the “not so normal” illness of Tara. I also like the character development (of everybody in the family) . It’s really great, and way too good for a tv-show. Nevertheless,… the main “theme” of a person having DID and trying to establish a normal life, wouldn’t be interesting anymore after season 4 or 5. Stop at the peak or this show will be… Read more »
Showtime has a bad habit of the way it ends its shows. Was really disappointed in the way The Tudors ended. And they end seasons awkwardly, at least to me.
What a shame that this show will be cancelled at the end of the season. This is a great show and Toni Collette is amazing in the role and I will miss her characters’ antics.
I hope they are taking account for the fact that people are cancelling thier cable services because alot of people are still out of work. I watch my shows on hulu and megavideo. This show is absolutely amazing!
Does Showtime make any money when you watch on hulu? Honest question, I just don’t know. Still, I highly doubt they make as much as they do when you subscribe and watch.
Clovis » Exactly.
Hello. I am very unhappy about U.S. of Tara being cancelled. While viewing last nights episode, my jaw was on the floor watching Bryce in action. Toni is GREAT acting out these personalities. Nurse Jackie is cool and Edie is good too, but as an RN, I weep for us when the smartest, most capable person on the floor is a lying, manipulative, junkie thief. What does that say about us? 300,000 viewers is no joke. Sometimes Showtime really sucks.
This sucks. I’m gonna miss it so much. The show needs a fourth season, to complete the story. Anyway, this petition has got more signatures: http://www.petitiononline.com/usots4/petition.html

I just started watching this show this season and I absolutely love the show! I can’t believe that I got hooked on another show that gets cancelled.
Well that sux. This was a very quality show. And now it’s gone? Wow that sux. What ever honestly. I guess next year they’ll be another new show with Nurse Jackie
