The aliens came and, despite some ratings challenges, they are staying — for at least one more season. ABC has renewed the V TV show for a second season.
Like the original, the new V revolves around the arrival of aliens to the planet Earth. While the visitors profess that they’ve come in peace, their ulterior motives slowly become clear. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Lourdes Benedicto, Laura Vandervoort, and Scott Wolf.
The series got off to a strong start in November with a 5.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.3 million total viewers. At the time, it was the highest rated debut of the 2009-10 season. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those viewers didn’t return for the second week. Episode two brought in a 3.8 rating and 10.7 million.
Week three dropped yet again, to a 3.1 in the demo and 9.26 million viewers. Thankfully, the ratings decline evened off from there. Unfortunately, due to some backstage issues, ABC put the show on hiatus for several months.

When V returned, the show’s ratings were understandably lower than they had been. Still, the drop could have been far worse than it was — attracting a 2.8 in the demo and 7.03 million viewers. The numbers later slipped to a low of a 1.9 rating and 4.87 million.
But now, in the final weeks of the season, V is starting to show a little growth. Last week’s brought a 2.1 and 5.37 million. This week attracted a 2.3 and 5.69 million. These increases seem to mirror the growth in its lead-in’s viewership (Lost) but they are increases nonetheless.
While it would seem that ABC should realistically cancel V, the network has a tradition of showing some faith in one or two struggling programs each year. It would seem that V is one of those shows. According to executive producer Scott Rosenbaum, ABC has renewed V for a second season of 13 episodes.
Will this gamble pay off? ABC has had mixed results in the past. Samantha Who? didn’t work out while Castle has grown nicely. With an ongoing sci-fi storyline, V isn’t exactly the type of show that’s inviting to new viewers. Perhaps the network has a plan. Time will tell.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that V has been renewed for season two? Are you surprised? What would you do to boost viewership?

Me..i must say am hookd as well.ABC should show consideration on the words of the Watcher and please release the next season cos personally, i cant wait for it to view.
I love this show! First season is going on in Finland in episode 3 coming up next, but I allready bought the full DVD of Season 1. They must continue this! Im not really into the Scifi stuff, but this is something that changes it. Just like I didint like scifi games neither, but then I played Halo and I love it. The V does the same, Its so exciting! This show has potentional to break some ice in the relationship between the majority and scifi. This war is just getting started and I want to see how it goes,… Read more »
“V” is the best and most enthrilling TV show i have ever watched. I just can’t get enough of it. I talk about it all the time to my friends. If i miss one epiosode i just go CRAAAAAAAZY. Am sad to hear that its ended, but hopefuly season two will be coming soooon. KEEEEEEP it on DEFINATELY!
V is a great tv series. What is awful is only being able to see a few shows and then waiting and waiting. January is such a long way off if you are as hooked as my wife and I are.
I am very happy that it was renewed. Thank you and please keep it on.
V is a show that is a break from Reality T.V. I was a fan of the original but it became poor plot writing that did it in. Hopefully this will not end the V series as well. I liked Invasion which was very decent, but ABC has the tendency to kill SCI-FI shows. Maybe SCI-FI channel is listening & will pick it up if ABC kills another show. DANCING WITH THE STARS NEEDS TO BE PUT TO REST.
I am from South Africa. V is one of the most anticipated shows here, that MANY people cannot get enough of. I was extremely glad to hear that the show will run for a second season, and cannot wait fir the season premier. Unfortunately I do not know when s2 will start here. To be frank, if rhe show gets cancelled before the end of season 2, I will be seriously pee’ved.
We love V and are really glad the network decided to renew it for another season!
glad to see the v renewed ………… amazing
I look forward to the show every week. However, I usually catch it online……Has ABC factored in the online vewing audience? I’m sure it is sizeable, and is going to grow as people become aware they can watch it at their convenience. I would still watch it if the number of commercials in the online presentation increased. V is right up there with Fringe, another favorite of mine.
We are currently getting to the end of season 1 in South Africa and it is my most anticipated program of the week. I am totally hooked on it and would love to watch Season 2. I know a number of people that are loving it too. Please don’t cancel the show. There is so many other crap TV shows, but this is NOT one of them.
V is a great tv show and I watched it a lot when I was a kid.
Dont know why they`ve cancelled the show, but keep running dumb shows as The Watcher is saying and its true.
Not all have the means to buy DSTV sets and therefore the most people on this earth that watch these shows download it and share it between friends and family.
Not all watch television lol some watch these episodes on their PC` as well.
So it would be good to not just look at how many watch TV.
Love the show! Can’t wait for season 2
You know this, why do the networks get us all hyped up on a show, only to cancel it before it’s done, I am GLAD the V is coming back for season 2, these Nelson rating, WTF !!!, if you really want to know how many people watch the show, run a facebook app, or post a online poll, or something, like seriously, how the frack do they know who is actually watching the show, or downloading it to watch it later, or heaven forbid, still using their VCR’s to record it for later, can they see into our living… Read more »
