Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

please do not cancel A gifted man. I love this show!! give it chance…
I really enjoy this show. It can only evolve and get better ratings. Pleasedon’t take this off!
Pleeeease do not cancel this show. A gifted man is the first serie that I am whatching and I am loooooving, please CBS, give it more one chance by changing the day of showing. I am begging !!!!!
Leave on! Too much trash on television. This show is very well written.
This is a great show. It has good plots and requires thought. It needs to be given a chance.
I think in a different time slot and different night it would do a lot better — good writing, good acting, and good setting (always love NYC) so it has the potential. It’s a particularly tough night and time. Most of my favorite programs are on Friday night so I end up taping them. I hope CBS sees the potential and works to fix the problems versus throwing the whole show away.
Please give this show some advertising. It’s wonderful. Put Anna on the show more. Listen your Jane Austen fans love her and she is being used less and less. She and the good doctor have wonderful chemistry. I am hoping the 9:00 slot last Friday night will help. This show has potential so give it another year or 10.
Love the show. I hope it won’t get canceled. I watch it over again on-line as well. We need this kind of show to spread the word that medicine is also for the poor. Nowadays, people want a medical degree to make a lot of money. I am not saying that doctors should work for free, but giving back to the community also reaps non-monetary rewards. There just need to be a balance and this show brings that out.
Good point!!!
I absolutely love “A Gifted Man” – I too agree it is well written and the cast is fantastic! There is so much crime and reality TV these days that a series such as this one is truly a breath of fresh air. It’s intelligent and emotive with a touch of spiritual enlightment, please don’t cancel this show.
Please do not cancel AGifted Man. As a late viewer to the show, the whole family loves it. The whole family ranges from husband in 60’s, teens, and a wife in early 50’s. It’s a great show to watch. Especially as House will go off the air, Gifted Man is a good show to see. Even if we go out on occasion on a Friday, we tape it. And, if this helps you, as a recent dinner we had last week, with about 28 people at a buffet at a private home, over half of the people love the show…in… Read more »
Don’t cancell A Gifted Man. It’s a smart program. Give it a chance. It desperately needs to be moved to another night. Friday night is a horrible night for a new show. Please leave this quality program on the air.
Please do not cancel! i love ths show! It is entertaining and I watch it every week. TV need Michael Holt!
A gifted Man is a really good show. It is well written and well cast. Please don’t cancel this show. I don’t know why they put new shows on Friday nights and don’t promote them; how does a new show stand a chance when a lot of people don’t know about it? Anyway, I’m home most Friday nights now-a days to watch tv because going to see a movie is outrageously expensive and I would like to watch a good tv show and this one “A Gifted Man” fits the bill for me. Thank you.
Please don’t cancel, my husband and I watch it every Friday night.
please DO NOT cancel this show. if this thing was on a better night its ratings would soar. hopefully the net work undrstands this. there indeed enough people with a brain out here in tv land that would support this show if they knew about it….thursday night would be perfect….
