Bewitched ended its run after eight seasons on the air in 1972, and one actress spent her time on set working and growing up in the spotlight. Erin Murphy played Tabitha on the classic series, and she spoke about her time on Bewitched in a recent interview with FOX News.
Murphy was very young when she began on the series, and she remembers her time fondly. She spoke about growing up on the series. She said:
“It was wonderful, it was fun for me. They made sure that it was fun. There were always animals like elephants and monkeys and things like that. It was a really fun place to grow up. My fondest memories are the relationships with the other actors. That many years together, you really do feel like a family. They all treated me like a family member, and it was a great place to be.”
She also spoke fondly about working with Elizabeth Montgomery, who was like a mother to her. She also touched on the cast shake up that pulled Dick York from the series. He was replaced by Dick Sargent in 1969. She spoke about the series having two dads during its run:
“No, because I was there on the set. Dick York really wasn’t doing well the last season he was on the air. Even though I was very young I knew that. We would get a script with Darrin in the script and then they would have to rewrite it without him in it. For that season we did seven episodes without his character. I saw him, I knew he wasn’t doing well and they explained it to me.”
Bewitched is still a beloved series, and Murphy was asked about the continued popularity for the classic series. She said:
“I think it was one of those shows that was really, really well done. We had great writers, amazing actors. Agnes Moorehead was nominated for an Academy Award. I think any TV show, if it’s done well, it will hold up over time. I think one of the reasons “Bewitched” is so popular in other countries is because it translates so well. Like the magic and the fantasy. I think it translates really well. I think we’re on in over 100 countries still.”
Erin Murphy is a mother of six boys, and she has continued to work in the industry. Were you a fan of Bewitched? Tell us what you think.
I loved the show Bewitched. I still watch the reruns.
Loved the show in my early teens and still adore the reruns. Looked up to Samantha the character. It never failed to entertain and make one feel goid
I still watch the show when it airs and have the full 8 season box set. I grew up watching it and it remains nostalgic for me with happy memories.
WATCHING IT NOW
i loved the show when on air & i still watch reruns & i just bought seasons 2-6. i’m looking for rest
I loved this show. However, Erin won’t acknowledge fans on Facebook. To me, that is standoffish and rude.
This was and still is my favorite sitcom. I don’t think there can be another as “magical” as this one was. The times were so different back then. And another one from the same era, I Dream of Jeannie. Another timeless classic.
I loved this show. They should make another series like this one.
Did they ever think about doing a series where Tabitha is the main character of the show and she marries a mortal.
They did do a spin off series, “Tabitha”. It was without Erin Murphy, Lisa Hartmann was cast as Tabitha. I think the debut episode did include Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick Sergeant taking Tabitha and Adam to college. The show only lasted for 12 episodes.
