Late last week, it was revealed that ABC had cut the first season of their new Blood & Oil TV show, from 13 to 10 episodes. Does this mean that the series has been cancelled or does it still have a shot at being renewed for a second season? How are the ratings?
On Blood & Oil, young couple Billy (Chace Crawford) and Cody LeFever (Rebecca Rittenhouse) move to Williston, North Dakota to seek their fortune. Billy’s drive attracts the attention of oil barron Hap Briggs (Don Johnson) and Hap takes him under his wing, much to the dismay of Hap’s son Wick (Scott Michael Foster). The rest of the cast includes Amber Valletta, Adan Canto, India de Beaufort, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Delroy Lindo.
The series debuted on September 27th and attracted a 1.36 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.36 million viewers. It was a disappointing start for the new drama. Both Once Upon a Time and Quantico (Blood & Oil’s lead-in and lead-out programs) did much better which could mean that some viewers specifically tuned out for the new series.
The ratings saw a reasonable drop in week two but then saw a huge tumble in week three — falling to a 0.86 in the demo (down 31%) with 3.91 million (down 26%). Viewership dropped another 11% in week four.
While some new ABC series have received full season orders (Quantico and Dr. Ken), the network has cut Blood & Oil’s episode order. While the network hasn’t officially cancelled the series, it’s clear they have no intention of making any more episodes unless there’s a surprise upturn in the ratings.
Word is that the cast and crew are currently filming episode eight. Episodes nine and 10 are likely in pre-production. Hopefully there’s still time for the writers to give the series some semblance of a satisfying conclusion.
What do you think? Do you like the Blood & Oil TV show? Do you think that it should be cancelled? Would you keep it on the air if you ran the network?
It’s a great show Don Johnson is the real thing. Keep it
Love the show. It’s hard enough to find a quality show that isn’t reality TV trash. Would love to see a second season and see something decent on tv. They should change nights is aired and realize how many people enjoy watching the show. It’s already hard enough as it is to find a series that keeps the interest level high but I believe they have one right now. I hope ABC can make changes to scheduling to keep Blood&Oil on the air.
Love, love, live it!!!! Please don’t cancel tho show!! My favorite new show
Please don’t cancel this show. It is one of the best things in TV. I love this show !!!!
Do not cancel this show! It is a great show! Give it a chance ABC!
Please do not cancel. Absolutely love this show.
Please don’t cancel Blood and Oil!!!!
This show just came on. Give it time to see where it goes. Instead of tracking live viewing why don’t you track DVR as well. You would be surprised of the increase of numbers. Too many new shows. No way you can cut them all. Thanks!
Keep the show going. One of the Best shows on TV now!
Give it a chance. You can’t just jump into a drama without learning who and what the characters are all about. The first few episodes are all background that we need to know what’s going on. Now we have the plot. Good things are starting to happen.
Keep it on don’t cancel. Cancel Dr. Ken. Blood and Oil is much better! Love this show!
hoping that ABC will change their minds and not cancel blood and oil it is the best show on at 9 on sunday nights and it is so good it holds your interest the whole time .please dont cancel it
I am NOT a Don Johnson fan until now. I watched the show just to say nope can’t stand Don and be done with it and he made a liar out of me. The cast is feisty. Chace is eye candy for anyone with eyes. I miss having a good nighttime drama in the likes of Dynasty and Dallas and hope this show survives. You pulled me over to ABC now keep me there
Good Grief…every time we get a good new series like Blood and Oil with a great cast… it gets yanked, same thing happened with “Forever” last season. Here’s an idea cancel the stupid comedy’s (and there are plenty of them on the air right now) !
Please give this series a chance. I record it, watch it Sunday night and watch the recording on Monday night with my daughter-in-law. Great cast and storylines!!
Me too!
