Late last week, it was revealed that ABC had cut the first season of their new Blood & Oil TV show, from 13 to 10 episodes. Does this mean that the series has been cancelled or does it still have a shot at being renewed for a second season? How are the ratings?
On Blood & Oil, young couple Billy (Chace Crawford) and Cody LeFever (Rebecca Rittenhouse) move to Williston, North Dakota to seek their fortune. Billy’s drive attracts the attention of oil barron Hap Briggs (Don Johnson) and Hap takes him under his wing, much to the dismay of Hap’s son Wick (Scott Michael Foster). The rest of the cast includes Amber Valletta, Adan Canto, India de Beaufort, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Delroy Lindo.
The series debuted on September 27th and attracted a 1.36 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.36 million viewers. It was a disappointing start for the new drama. Both Once Upon a Time and Quantico (Blood & Oil’s lead-in and lead-out programs) did much better which could mean that some viewers specifically tuned out for the new series.
The ratings saw a reasonable drop in week two but then saw a huge tumble in week three — falling to a 0.86 in the demo (down 31%) with 3.91 million (down 26%). Viewership dropped another 11% in week four.
While some new ABC series have received full season orders (Quantico and Dr. Ken), the network has cut Blood & Oil’s episode order. While the network hasn’t officially cancelled the series, it’s clear they have no intention of making any more episodes unless there’s a surprise upturn in the ratings.
Word is that the cast and crew are currently filming episode eight. Episodes nine and 10 are likely in pre-production. Hopefully there’s still time for the writers to give the series some semblance of a satisfying conclusion.
What do you think? Do you like the Blood & Oil TV show? Do you think that it should be cancelled? Would you keep it on the air if you ran the network?
Pffft. Idiot networks. These brain-dead execs put a show up against Sunday Night Football and then are amazed when it doesn’t bring mega-numbers. What do they want from a show? Tell us in advance so we don’t waste our time getting invested into a series that is designed to fail. Screw You, Networks. This includes the brain-trust at Sci-Fi as well.
my wife and l look forward to seeing Blood & Oil. Since we have moved to North Dakota it carries even more significance and piques interest. It is one of the best shows and ISN’T a reality show, many of which are garbage. This is his wife and i agree one hundred percent. i need to know when the next show will air. It’s the high light of my night after work… just need more episodes fast lol!!!
Please don’t cut the show. My husband and I watch each Monday on Hulu ( we work on weekends ). We really enjoy the show.
Please Keep it!!! We love the story line.
I agree with someone above who said they always cut shows I watch. The networks are run by the next generation now, I guess. That means short attention spans and the want for instant results. Like tons of viewers in the first two or three shows. Problem is the networks line up there show in September and put there promising shows against other networks promising shows. It becomes like a football game! There can only be one winner. So why not but the show on a different night if its not doing that well. TV has become so boring now… Read more »
Please don’t cancel. . I was enjoying it very much.
Keep the show!!!! Every show I actually watch gets cut, why?!?!?? It’s very interesting
Please keep this show! I have enjoyed it more than any new show in a long time.
My husband and I both look forward to watching Blood and Oil. In fact, my husband just made the comment “Oooh, it’s getting good!”.
Please don’t cancel this show. I’m getting a little tired of all the reality shows.
KEEP IT! it is definately one of the most appealing new shows. Great cast and great opportunities for entertwined story lines. I think it has a tough time slot and would certainly attract more viewers at a different time. KEEP IT! We ol’ folks like it!!
Keep the show! I am very particular about the shows I watch and this was one of them.
Are you able to tell if viewers are dvr’ing it to watch in its entirety? I record it to avoid all the ads.
I absolutely love this show. I watch it every Sunday. I stopped watching NBC because almost every new show I started to get into, they would cancel it. I would keep it.
I absolutely love this series!!! It’s great to see Don Johnson back looking better than ever and in a good guy bad guy role. I like the main characters and there is plenty of room for them to grow into love-hate relationships with their viewers. There are many directions the plot can evolve to keep this series on at least 5 years and give the writers plenty of time to come up with a great finale. Do what needs to be done to keep this show on the air, it truly deserves the shot.
Keep it, I look forward to it every Sunday!
It’s a great show look forward to watching it. I would not cancel it.
