As Tom Kane continues to try to keep a grip on his city and life, the Boss TV series struggles to attract an audience. Will Boss be cancelled or renewed for a third season of Starz? That’s an even bigger challenge thank Kane’s.
Airing on Friday nights, Boss revolves around the Mayor of Chicago (Kelsey Grammer) who’s recently been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. Determined to remain in charge, he conceals the disease from everyone around him except his physician. The Starz TV show also features the talents of Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson, Troy Garity, Rotimi, Jonathan Groff, and Sanaa Lathan.
It’s no secret that the TV series struggled in its first season. Despite sporting some top talent, the viewers and ratings just weren’t there. Luckily for the cast and crew, the show was renewed for a second season weeks before the show even premiered. Had the cable channel waited to see how well Boss would perform before making a decision, it’s hard to believe we’d be seeing a second season now.
Last month, at The Television Critics Association press tour, Boss showrunner Farhad Safinia said, “I am completely aware of what the numbers are, and I’m heartbroken… It’s one of those things where you’d like more people to see what you’re doing… I do hope the audience comes to see it so we can tell the entire story. I think we just have to work on that assumption that we will get to do it.”

The ratings were so low for the first season of Boss that they’re often very difficult to locate. We do know that Boss premiered last October to 659,000 viewers and by the middle of the run had fallen to 250,000.
Season two certainly hasn’t been bringing any better ratings. The August 24th installment drew just 229,000 viewers and the season has averaged only 310,000. Earlier this year, the second season of Spartacus averaged 1.35 million on Friday nights in the same timelot.
It seems highly unlikely that Starz will be bringing back Boss for a third season. These numbers are just incredibly small for an expensive scripted drama.
On the positive side, Safinia has indicated that they plot each season like a movie so that each has a beginning, middle, and end. While it’s very likely that Boss will be cancelled, at least the show’s loyal viewers will be given at least some kind of resolution by the end of the season. Season two wraps on October 19th.
What do you think? Do you like the Boss TV series? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on with a bigger audience? Should it be renewed for a third season or cancelled?
Please don’t cancel BOSS, this is one of my favorite shows. Keeps me on my seat the whole time, if BOSS is not renewed for a 3rd season, I will be canceling STARZ. I only have it because of this show.
I love the show. It’s unfortunate that I did not learn of it until Season 2 was almost over. I watched all of Season 1 and 2 in one weekend. I hate to think faithful views will be left to wonder what would have happenned in Season 3.
A great political drama. I wish they would prefer quality (an an Emmy option) over rating this time. Some good series attracted the larger audience in the third season.
PLEASE CONTINE BOSS FOR A 3rd SEASON!!! The acting is surperb, and the story line is exciting drama etc. I can’t believe there hasn’t been large viewer support. Maybe the cable network isn’t as popular as HBO or SHOWTIME.
Boss is an INCREDIBLE show! The writers and directors are top notch and the cast is STELLAR! DO NOT CANCEL THIS SERIES – we are just getting warmed up with Tom Kane and his cronies! Please find a way to keep this show going! Boss has the potential to run as long as The Wire, The Sopranos, and yes, even as long as Frasier! Change the time slot, air the previous seasons more frequently, beef up your PR…do whatever you need to do. But don’t cancel it.
Please renew Boss our family loves it and we think it is one of those few shows on today worth keeping!!! Kelsey Grammar is exceptional!!
“Boss” is one of the best shows being made today. It should be drawing all of the viewers that HBO had with “The Wire”, because it’s very similar. I have no idea why it doesn’t have more viewers, but I think it’s the Friday night first showing. It seems to have a lot more viewers by the end of the weekend than it does on it’s premier night. That should say something to the folks at Starz. I know many people that would love this show, but don’t even know it exists because they aren’t usually home watching TV on… Read more »
Yes, Kelsey Grammer is excellent! The whole cast is great!
This is the best political show on TV. If the show is not
doing well on Sunday – put it on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights
at a good time slot.
Please Please bring it back for a 3rd season!
I’m with you on the mental problems. Excellent show but they are too much at times.
Please renew Boss. It is one of the few shows that both my wife and I enjoy. We love the actors and the characters they portray. Excellent tv.
Boss is exceptional. There is nothing else like it on TV today. It contains elements of Shakespearean and Greek tragedies that are as riveting today as they were centuries ago. The show presents timeless human fears, desires and faults, reminiscent of those said to be contained in the collective unconscious. It is powerful stuff, and so well written. I find its themes relevant still and love watching them play out modern day. Kelsey Grammar and Connie Nielsen are superb. Such wonderful, powerful, acting. Most of the supporting cast are great too. Please give us a season three!
BEST show on TV!! They CANNOT cancel!!
best show on tv usually means they do cancel – Rubicon for example!
Season 3, please! We need more of the Gramm man!
RENEW BOSS.. this show could run for years and have a huge cult following. Give it a chance.
Why isn’t this show more well known? Why aren’t the critics doing their job and getting the knowlege out there, same was true of The Wire. If starz don’t take it up, I hope netflix do, or for that matter some other network. This is pure gold on any channel. They need to start repeating the first season for those who obviously missed it first time round….which is pretty much everybody.
Boss is fabulous, they cannot cancel this show! Yes, the ratings are low, but then Starz is new at this and Boss can give them much needed drama cred. Also, i have read that Oprah loves Boss, so perhaps she can step in OR buy season 3 for the OWN network!
RENEW!!!! Season 3 please! One of the most compelling series I’ve ever watched. I was the Mayor of a motherfucking big city! I want this goddamned pothole fixed now!!!!!!
