In a somewhat surprising move, the alphabet network has cut a beloved family drama after five seasons on the air. Season six of Brothers & Sisters won’t be on ABC’s fall schedule.
Brothers & Sisters debuted in 2006 and revolves around the extended Walker family of Pasadena, California. The current season features a large ensemble cast that includes Calista Flockhart, Dave Annable, Gilles Marini, Luke Macfarlane, Matthew Rhys, Patricia Wettig, Rachel Griffiths, Ron Rifkin, and Sally Field.
The family drama was nearly cancelled last year but was ultimately renewed for an abbreviated fifth season. In light of some positive ratings, ABC ordered additional episodes, bringing the season total to 22 installments. Unfortunately, those ratings didn’t last.

The numbers slowly declined over the course of the season but really seemed to take a dip in the latter part of the season, just when execs were trying to figure out if it was worth renewing. Rumors started circulating that Brothers & Sisters would be cancelled and then there was word that ABC was considering an abbreviated sixth season to wrap things up.
In the end, network execs decided there just wasn’t enough interest in the show anymore and wanted to use the post-Desperate Housewives timeslot for a new series.
As a result, last Sunday’s season finale will end up being the series finale for Brothers & Sisters. It’s a sad and unfortunate end for a once popular series.
What do you think? Are you sad to hear that Brothers & Sisters won’t be back for season six? Was it time for the series to end?

I am so sad that Brothers and Sisters has been cancelled — it was my absolute favourite American show. It made me laugh and cry. It did go through a difficult stage at the beginning of the last series when I thought it has jumped the shark but has recovered and become stronger. Sally Field is stunning and I think there are lots more credible stories left for the Walkers. I am really sorry that it has gone.
I agree? It rates really well here in Australia? It’s generally the top show in it’s timeslot and a pick for advertisers because of this reasoning. Bizarre that there such an obvious difference in ‘taste’ between Australia and the ever ruling USA. Disappointing.
Omg what the hell Australia loves bros and sisters how could you cancel it? Really what are you thinking?
So sorry to hear that the show has been cancelled it was my favourite show on tv
Not many nice things come to mind right now for ABC, but at least they gave us somewhat of a closure with this show (not like all the others that are being cancelled). We can kind of see where each Walker is headed and make our own happy ending. Still sad. There is going to be such crap on TV this summer and fall. Boo ABC!!
I am also disappointed that such a well-acted show would be “pulled”. I am surprised that the show is so appealing to me – and then I realised, good grief there was an actual script that worked, and genuine acting that pulled it off. I also am astounded at the quality of current programmes that are screening at present, and the following they appear to attract – could it be that viewers simply aren’t presented with enough choice.
I am totally GUTTED, DEVISTATED and DEPRESSED over the end of the series. 🙁
i will be so sorry to see the end of a good show… you got to laugh and cry with the family and just sometimes i could see my families troubles and woes in the show. desperate housewives i dont even give it a look in. trash is what i think of that show.
I am so disappointed a great show has been cancelled…. I can not believe it… it was by far one of the best shows I have ever watched… it often made me laugh out loud… I wish they would change their minds and bring it back
Incredibly disappointed to hear Brothers and Sisters has been cancelled. I guess reality shows really have taken over the world, which is reality are shows about nothing, the production costs are lower, the untalented ‘talent’ dont cost a network the salary that is commanded by a professional actor. Fingers crossed there is a network out there who can pick up Brothers and Sisters.
I too am devistated. I will miss this fine show. Such a shame we will not get a considered ending over a known final series. It makes it harder when shows just stop.
i am so very sadden and disappointed that Brothers and Sisters season has come to an end WHY????????? is it because it is wholesome, none voilent SHAME ON YOU
Australian viewer
I am truly sad that this show had to end. I get up at 5 a.m. and I actually took naps on Sunday’s just so I could stay up to watch the show. It was the first thing we talked about around the water cooler each Monday morning.
It seems as if it isn’t about doctors, lawyers, or police officers someone is saying that the ratings are too low. Oh, lets not forget about those stupid reality shows that are actually REAL! Oh well, ABC got it wrong AGAIN.
I am devastated that Brothers and Sisters has been cancelled. I luv this show. Its so realistic and funny and sad and a wonderful show. What do these executive know – surely they could try it at a different time.
Hi! We are writing from Australia. We are very dissapointed that Brothers And Sisters is being cancelled. We love this show and look forward each week to seeing the Walker family. Especially Scotty.
If 8 million viewers aren’t enough for you then I don’t know what is! Brothers and Sisters is a show about family values and compassion. Something that a lot of shows lack and I think by taking it off, it is saying that the networks obviously don’t care about quality but quantity (ratings). Hopefully another network picks it up and makes ABC jealous because it deserves to stay on the air.
