Falling Nielsen ratings, rising costs, and perhaps a side of cast upheaval, seem to have taken a lethal bite out of an established daytime delicacy. ABC has cancelled The Chew TV show after seven seasons. Instead of season eight, the Alphabet Network has ordered an additional hour of Good Morning America — in the afternoon. Reportedly, the GMA expansion will not affect Live with Kelly & Ryan, which airs at 10:00am ET.
A cooking and lifestyle TV show, The Chew premiered on ABC on September 26, 2011, with original hosts Mario Batali, Daphne Oz, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, and Clinton Kelly. When the production did not replace Oz, who left after the sixth season, fans started listening for the kitchen timer of doom.
Then, during the first half of The Chew season seven, sexual impropriety allegations involving Batali (not show-related) came to light. After a brief investigation, the formerly celebrated chef and restaurateur was officially terminated from The Chew, in December of 2017. Once again, cancellation talk bubbled up — like yeast during proofing.
Symon, Hall, and Kelly have done their level best to fill the gaps at the host table, so perhaps this show has just reached its expiration date. According to reports, The Chew will finish out its regular seventh season production schedule. As with past seasons, new episodes will air throughout the month of June, with repackaged segments taking over until September.
No Season Eight — The Chew to be Replaced by Good Morning America
ABC News’ Good Morning America, will expand to three hours. The new third hour will air at 1 PM. EDT, noon CDT/PDT. The extra hour will replace ABC’s daytime food-themed program The Chew which, after seven seasons, 1454 episodes, multiple Emmy nominations and two Emmy Awards, will cease production at the end of this season but will continue to air as planned until September with all-new episodes airing in June.

“Over the past six years Good Morning America has solidified its place as America’s No. 1 morning show,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, and president, Disney|ABC Television. “We believe there is great opportunity for viewers and advertisers in expanding to a third hour.”
“While this is the right decision for our business, it is also bittersweet,” Sherwood added. “For seven years ‘The Chew’ has delighted audiences by delivering innovative food segments in an entertaining atmosphere. We applaud and thank Gordon Elliott, Aimee Householder, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly and the entire cast and crew for their great work and amazing run. And we wish them the very best.”
In telling his staff, executive producer and “The Chew” show creator Elliott saluted ABC’s move into a brand-new genre seven years ago. “Before ‘The Chew,’ no one had attempted a talk/food hybrid. Our hosts Clinton, Carla and Michael and the staff created television history executing the show as well as they did for all these years. I know I speak for all of the people who work on the show when I say it was the best television we have ever had the privilege to produce.”

“Good Morning America keeps finding new ways to inform and delight our audience. We recently expanded GMA through our social channels and a newly launched website. Now we will build a whole new hour of compelling content that is true to GMA;s spirit,” said James Goldston, president of ABC News.
Additional details about the program, including the title and anchors, will be announced in the coming months.
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Chew TV series? Do you think the Batali scandal and firing were the final straw, or was it time to end the show, anyhow? If it were up to you, would ABC have cancelled or renewed The Chew for an eighth season? Sound off in the comments.
6/15/18 update: The final episode airs. Should The Chew have been cancelled? Vote here.
I loved mario Batali and I have not watched since he left. I do not care about the women and their charges. Wish they didn’t fire him. Bad move.
I am really sad to hear about the cancellation of the Chew. I really wanted to come to a live show one day. I really love the chefs on the show and I learned a lot. I think it was a bad decision, but I wish the chew cast and helpers all the best. I am not a real big fan of GMA anymore.
I will miss The Chew very much and am sorry to know it has been cancelled. I have watched it for 7 years, and I do think it was harder to fill the time when Daphne and Mario left. It wasn’t only the recipes that I liked; it was the joy that the hosts brought into my living room 5 days a week . They truly seemed to like one another, and there was never any snarky comments as there are on some of the other cooking shows. I am wondering if they could have introduced another host similar to… Read more »
iam not happy about the cancellation of the chew. who wants another hour of good morning america. please bring the chew back or put something on besides a news show
We love the chew! If we were at work, we’d record the episode and binge watch! The hosts were so obviously happy to be there and work together and the recipes were great and duplicable. So many times my husband would ask, “what’s for dinner?” And I’d tell him it’s that recipe we just saw on the Chew. Bad mistake on part of ABC with so few daytime TV that is light, fun and improves ones life!
That was the only show that brought good recipes, fun and laughter to my day. This is ridiculous that’s what we need MORE NEWS…just great. I will miss Clinton, Michael and Carla everyday. It would be nice if another channel picked them up. Then ABC can take their news to an all day show. My wish is for ABC to lose their ratings over the loss of this show.
I won’t be watching ABC anymore unless you get another show with Clinton, Carla and Micheel on it again.
I am sick and tired of all the news and the laughter that the Chew brought was such a delight. I would like to see more light hearted, educational programing, like the chew. I am still in tears!
I am still in tears. Why?
The Chew being cancelled = horrible, dumb and heartless — snatching a funny, warm and family oriented show — I was thrilled and uplifted and happy to see it day after day, sharing in the laughter, camaraderie, realness and joy AND THE FOOD!; the movement, lightness, sets, fun and silly games… I delayed my lunch hour in order to stay in front of the TV to smile and enjoy. GMA being expanded to 3 hour = horrible, dumb and sooooo unnecessary — don’t want a third our of depressing dribble — it CANNOT match the lightness and lift of The… Read more »
I think it is so stupid to cancel THE CHEW it gave me a break from news and ” normal talk shows. it was fun to watch and i learned things about food i never thought of before. i will truly miss the gang. BRING IT BACK!!!!
I HATE THAT THE “CHEW” IS BEING CANCELLED! I WISH THE CREW NOTHING BUT THE BEST…GOD BLESS YOU ALL! I WILL BE LOOKING FOR OTHER GREAT THINGS FROM CARLA, MICHAEL AND CLINTON.
The Chew was one of the few daytime programs that I will watch. The news hit me today that it is being cancelled. I love the 3 who are on it now. It is always informative and entertaining. It has been the best show on daytime television….it would even challenge night time if given a chance. The loss of Oz and Batalli have not bothered me in the least. In fact, I think it got better. The 3 on it now compliment each other for the viewer. Who ever decided to cancel it has lost their mind in some sense.… Read more »
So sad!!! Talk about back stabbing!!! I wont be watching ABC any more, this was wrong on so many levels, every time we get a decent show that the whole family enjoys, boom, Clinton was so on target on backstabbing, I hope GMA fails!!!!
I looked forward to this program everyday and when I was unable to watch I recorded it. Great great cast. That’s what makes the program. I’ll really miss it. Good luck to the cast.
