Falling Nielsen ratings, rising costs, and perhaps a side of cast upheaval, seem to have taken a lethal bite out of an established daytime delicacy. ABC has cancelled The Chew TV show after seven seasons. Instead of season eight, the Alphabet Network has ordered an additional hour of Good Morning America — in the afternoon. Reportedly, the GMA expansion will not affect Live with Kelly & Ryan, which airs at 10:00am ET.
A cooking and lifestyle TV show, The Chew premiered on ABC on September 26, 2011, with original hosts Mario Batali, Daphne Oz, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, and Clinton Kelly. When the production did not replace Oz, who left after the sixth season, fans started listening for the kitchen timer of doom.
Then, during the first half of The Chew season seven, sexual impropriety allegations involving Batali (not show-related) came to light. After a brief investigation, the formerly celebrated chef and restaurateur was officially terminated from The Chew, in December of 2017. Once again, cancellation talk bubbled up — like yeast during proofing.
Symon, Hall, and Kelly have done their level best to fill the gaps at the host table, so perhaps this show has just reached its expiration date. According to reports, The Chew will finish out its regular seventh season production schedule. As with past seasons, new episodes will air throughout the month of June, with repackaged segments taking over until September.
No Season Eight — The Chew to be Replaced by Good Morning America
ABC News’ Good Morning America, will expand to three hours. The new third hour will air at 1 PM. EDT, noon CDT/PDT. The extra hour will replace ABC’s daytime food-themed program The Chew which, after seven seasons, 1454 episodes, multiple Emmy nominations and two Emmy Awards, will cease production at the end of this season but will continue to air as planned until September with all-new episodes airing in June.

“Over the past six years Good Morning America has solidified its place as America’s No. 1 morning show,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, and president, Disney|ABC Television. “We believe there is great opportunity for viewers and advertisers in expanding to a third hour.”
“While this is the right decision for our business, it is also bittersweet,” Sherwood added. “For seven years ‘The Chew’ has delighted audiences by delivering innovative food segments in an entertaining atmosphere. We applaud and thank Gordon Elliott, Aimee Householder, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly and the entire cast and crew for their great work and amazing run. And we wish them the very best.”
In telling his staff, executive producer and “The Chew” show creator Elliott saluted ABC’s move into a brand-new genre seven years ago. “Before ‘The Chew,’ no one had attempted a talk/food hybrid. Our hosts Clinton, Carla and Michael and the staff created television history executing the show as well as they did for all these years. I know I speak for all of the people who work on the show when I say it was the best television we have ever had the privilege to produce.”

“Good Morning America keeps finding new ways to inform and delight our audience. We recently expanded GMA through our social channels and a newly launched website. Now we will build a whole new hour of compelling content that is true to GMA;s spirit,” said James Goldston, president of ABC News.
Additional details about the program, including the title and anchors, will be announced in the coming months.

Please do not cancel THE CHEW..
I have been watching the Chew since day one it will be grately missed I love everyone on the show even the one that has moved on thank you for a hour of pure love good luck on whatever you do after your last show
I am so disappointed in this decision. I will not however be watching the hour of GMA at 1pm. For no other reason than I’ve had my fill of news in the morning, another hour during the day just is too much murder and mayhem for me.
I think The Chew is a great show. I enjoy it everyday. I think that Carla, Clinton, and Michael do a great job and they don’t need any other permanent hosts. I will miss the show and would rather see it renewed!
I’m sorry. I don’t need another hour of GMA. I watch the chew everyday, and for it if I think I’ll miss it. I think this was a bad move and after the chew is over. I will NOT Watch ABC. Not that
I think you care what viewers think.
I was horrified to hear that The Chew has been cancelled by ABC. Who in the world needs another hour of Good Morning America. I stopped watching that when Joan Lunden left. Clinton, Carl, and Michael were a joy to watch every day. I retired last year and this was one of my favorite shows that I got watch every day. Please bring them back in September.
Im so upset about the cancelling of the Chew!!! I looked forward everyday to watch these talented chefs teach me, make ne laugh & i feel like im loosing good friends!!! I will miss them all so much!!!!
So disappointed The Chew is being cancelled. We look forward to watching every day and many times adjust our schedule so we don’t miss an episode. We don’t need another hour of GMA – let’s keep the lighthearted cooking/entertainment show. We can all use that in today’s atmosphere!
I love the chew it was in the perfect time slot.the morning time slots are all packed with news/talk shows,it was a nice break from all of that now ABC is going to try and cram some more down our throats..it’s almost an all day news channel..I will miss the chew, especially micheal Carla, and Clinton..but I guarantee I’m not watching another news show…KEEP the CHEW!!!!!!!!
I always watch the Chew at noon every day! Now what am I going to watch from noon until 1pm? Not renewing it for an eighth season is a very big mistake.
The only reason I watched channel 8 is because of The Chew. I will miss it so much. It’s a teaching show plus all the wonderful recipes and laughs.
I think we have to much GMA already. get rid of the view and keep the chew. don’t touch Kelly and Ryan love them
I’m disappointed this show didnt get picked up for the 8th season. TV anymore doesn’t have anything good but The chew is funny, great recipes, just a good show all around. My opinion big mistake cancelling it!
I agree completely–who needs another news show. This was a talk show with a twist. It had awesome hosts (I miss Ms Oz)who were different than the usual fare on talk time TV and a joy to watch. The cooking was great and the guests were wonderful and seemed to truly like the show and the people on it–they didn’t just come to “plug” something. Yes the scandle with Mario was aweful but really had little effect on the show–he wasn’t on that often anyway and the others did a great job filling in. Please ABC, reconsider. I love GMA… Read more »
Although each person on the Chew plays an important part. Mario and Daphne leaving felt different. But I was so happy for her wanting to raise her family. Totally get that. Mario was a shock. I have followed Michael, Clint and Carla for a long time. I will continue to do that. But I totally understand the reasoning. Maybe you should have replaced one or both . There are so many Top Chef winners as well as contestants that would have been honored to catch a show like that. As a person that enjoys the Chew. I along with many… Read more »
I love the The Chew. I record it everyday and watch it when I get home from work. No matter how bad my day has been, (I am a nurse so some days get pretty ugly) Clinton, Carla and Michael will always put a smile on my face! No offense to the people of GMA but they will never capture the magic of The Chew crew.
We LOOVVEE The Chew & the host!! I come home to watch it on my lunch break!! I love Good Morning America but during the time it airs now! Haven’t you all heard that old saying…if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!! #keepthechew
