Falling Nielsen ratings, rising costs, and perhaps a side of cast upheaval, seem to have taken a lethal bite out of an established daytime delicacy. ABC has cancelled The Chew TV show after seven seasons. Instead of season eight, the Alphabet Network has ordered an additional hour of Good Morning America — in the afternoon. Reportedly, the GMA expansion will not affect Live with Kelly & Ryan, which airs at 10:00am ET.
A cooking and lifestyle TV show, The Chew premiered on ABC on September 26, 2011, with original hosts Mario Batali, Daphne Oz, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, and Clinton Kelly. When the production did not replace Oz, who left after the sixth season, fans started listening for the kitchen timer of doom.
Then, during the first half of The Chew season seven, sexual impropriety allegations involving Batali (not show-related) came to light. After a brief investigation, the formerly celebrated chef and restaurateur was officially terminated from The Chew, in December of 2017. Once again, cancellation talk bubbled up — like yeast during proofing.
Symon, Hall, and Kelly have done their level best to fill the gaps at the host table, so perhaps this show has just reached its expiration date. According to reports, The Chew will finish out its regular seventh season production schedule. As with past seasons, new episodes will air throughout the month of June, with repackaged segments taking over until September.
No Season Eight — The Chew to be Replaced by Good Morning America
ABC News’ Good Morning America, will expand to three hours. The new third hour will air at 1 PM. EDT, noon CDT/PDT. The extra hour will replace ABC’s daytime food-themed program The Chew which, after seven seasons, 1454 episodes, multiple Emmy nominations and two Emmy Awards, will cease production at the end of this season but will continue to air as planned until September with all-new episodes airing in June.

“Over the past six years Good Morning America has solidified its place as America’s No. 1 morning show,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, and president, Disney|ABC Television. “We believe there is great opportunity for viewers and advertisers in expanding to a third hour.”
“While this is the right decision for our business, it is also bittersweet,” Sherwood added. “For seven years ‘The Chew’ has delighted audiences by delivering innovative food segments in an entertaining atmosphere. We applaud and thank Gordon Elliott, Aimee Householder, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly and the entire cast and crew for their great work and amazing run. And we wish them the very best.”
In telling his staff, executive producer and “The Chew” show creator Elliott saluted ABC’s move into a brand-new genre seven years ago. “Before ‘The Chew,’ no one had attempted a talk/food hybrid. Our hosts Clinton, Carla and Michael and the staff created television history executing the show as well as they did for all these years. I know I speak for all of the people who work on the show when I say it was the best television we have ever had the privilege to produce.”

“Good Morning America keeps finding new ways to inform and delight our audience. We recently expanded GMA through our social channels and a newly launched website. Now we will build a whole new hour of compelling content that is true to GMA;s spirit,” said James Goldston, president of ABC News.
Additional details about the program, including the title and anchors, will be announced in the coming months.
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Chew TV series? Do you think the Batali scandal and firing were the final straw, or was it time to end the show, anyhow? If it were up to you, would ABC have cancelled or renewed The Chew for an eighth season? Sound off in the comments.
6/15/18 update: The final episode airs. Should The Chew have been cancelled? Vote here.
I THINK THIS IS SO WRONG-I HAVE WATCH U TAKE SO MANY OF MY SHOWS OFF THE AIR-I’M 73 YRS OLD SO U KNOW I HAVE WATCHED ALOT-I DON’T WANT TO WATCH MORE OF GM -I WILL GO TO CHANNEL 6 AND 35-I STOP WATCHING THE CHEW WHEN IT WENT DOWN HILL AFTER BARBARA-IF U BRING –GM I’M DONE
I can’t believe they cancelled the Chew. Two hours of GMA is enough. ABC tried this before and it didn’t work. Bad decision to cancel the Chew. I will find something else to watch and it won’t be on ABC just like I do when the View comes on. Another terrible ABC show
The Chew was the best part of the morning! Expanding GMA to THREE HOURS???!!! I can’t get through the first hour anymore, so I’m weaning myself from ABC morning television. Bye Michael, Carla and Clinton!!! I will miss you guys!! I didn’t get to fulfill a bucket list item after all…….
nobody needs another hour of micheal stryhan
I can’t believe that “The Chew” is being cancelled. It’s such a great show. The co-host work great together and they really show how much fun cooking can be. I don’t understand why GMA has to be expanded for another hour. Makes no sense. I am very dissappointed that this show is being cancelled.
I can’t believe The Chew is being cancelled. It’s a delightful cooking show and does quite well with the three remaining chefs. I do not watch GMA, it’s a waste of time.
These 3 on the Chew have amazing chemistry, which I believe is kind of rare these days. They are kind, honest, so funny, they laugh so much themselves you can’t help but smile & laugh along with them. Very good show, there are so few good shows anymore. My husband passed away 2 months ago, The Chew has really saved me. I record it everyday, & some evenings it really helps to take me back to normal & it just lifts me up. Make a new show for them! Clinton, Michael & Carla. I love them. I will miss this… Read more »
I completely agree with you Shirli, good comments.
Carla, Clinton, and Michael were entertaining. We need that in our lives. I would DVR The Chew just to hear all the Great stories and Ideas they had. So disappointed in ABC choice.
I am very disappointed in ABC for cancelling The Chew. It was not only funny which made me laugh alot, but I learned a lot about
preparing challenging dishes. Carla, Michael and Clayton were amazing entertainers and successful chefs. I will not be watching GMA and don’,t anyway. Boring to me so I will probably take a nap at 1 pm. Being retired, I have choices. The ratings will fail, watch and see.
I love the chew, another episode of good morning america is insane. Something light hearted and educational is what i want. Very disappointed in the network.
completely agree Kathy!
Second comment on losing the Chew. So disappointed in ABC choices. Carla, Clinton, and Michael were an entertaining group and did a great job of cooking education along with fun. Will not watch the replacement and may avoid ABC altogether. Their programs are mostly of no interest to me.
I never watched one episode of The Chew… I was so angry when they canceled All My Children, I stuck to never watching ABC’s replacement… they’re putting on GMA because half of it will be advertising as it is in their morning show. Afterall, isn’t it just about the money?
I am so angry that the Chew is being cancelled. I will never watch Good Morning America again. I loved Clinton , Carla, Michael and Daphne ( wish she could have returned but I understand the needs of her children) and will miss them and the show.
Do not think the Chew should be canceled. No sex no back stabbing, just cooking and joking around. Must not have enough nasty-ness for corporate people.
PLEASE DON’T DO IT !!!! It’s one of the few shows I look forward to watching; fun and informative, without the news. Do we really need ANOTHER hour of GMA??
