Falling Nielsen ratings, rising costs, and perhaps a side of cast upheaval, seem to have taken a lethal bite out of an established daytime delicacy. ABC has cancelled The Chew TV show after seven seasons. Instead of season eight, the Alphabet Network has ordered an additional hour of Good Morning America — in the afternoon. Reportedly, the GMA expansion will not affect Live with Kelly & Ryan, which airs at 10:00am ET.
A cooking and lifestyle TV show, The Chew premiered on ABC on September 26, 2011, with original hosts Mario Batali, Daphne Oz, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, and Clinton Kelly. When the production did not replace Oz, who left after the sixth season, fans started listening for the kitchen timer of doom.
Then, during the first half of The Chew season seven, sexual impropriety allegations involving Batali (not show-related) came to light. After a brief investigation, the formerly celebrated chef and restaurateur was officially terminated from The Chew, in December of 2017. Once again, cancellation talk bubbled up — like yeast during proofing.
Symon, Hall, and Kelly have done their level best to fill the gaps at the host table, so perhaps this show has just reached its expiration date. According to reports, The Chew will finish out its regular seventh season production schedule. As with past seasons, new episodes will air throughout the month of June, with repackaged segments taking over until September.
No Season Eight — The Chew to be Replaced by Good Morning America
ABC News’ Good Morning America, will expand to three hours. The new third hour will air at 1 PM. EDT, noon CDT/PDT. The extra hour will replace ABC’s daytime food-themed program The Chew which, after seven seasons, 1454 episodes, multiple Emmy nominations and two Emmy Awards, will cease production at the end of this season but will continue to air as planned until September with all-new episodes airing in June.

“Over the past six years Good Morning America has solidified its place as America’s No. 1 morning show,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, and president, Disney|ABC Television. “We believe there is great opportunity for viewers and advertisers in expanding to a third hour.”
“While this is the right decision for our business, it is also bittersweet,” Sherwood added. “For seven years ‘The Chew’ has delighted audiences by delivering innovative food segments in an entertaining atmosphere. We applaud and thank Gordon Elliott, Aimee Householder, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly and the entire cast and crew for their great work and amazing run. And we wish them the very best.”
In telling his staff, executive producer and “The Chew” show creator Elliott saluted ABC’s move into a brand-new genre seven years ago. “Before ‘The Chew,’ no one had attempted a talk/food hybrid. Our hosts Clinton, Carla and Michael and the staff created television history executing the show as well as they did for all these years. I know I speak for all of the people who work on the show when I say it was the best television we have ever had the privilege to produce.”

“Good Morning America keeps finding new ways to inform and delight our audience. We recently expanded GMA through our social channels and a newly launched website. Now we will build a whole new hour of compelling content that is true to GMA;s spirit,” said James Goldston, president of ABC News.
Additional details about the program, including the title and anchors, will be announced in the coming months.
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Chew TV series? Do you think the Batali scandal and firing were the final straw, or was it time to end the show, anyhow? If it were up to you, would ABC have cancelled or renewed The Chew for an eighth season? Sound off in the comments.
6/15/18 update: The final episode airs. Should The Chew have been cancelled? Vote here.
Please reconsider this error in judgement. We try to watch this show everyday and record it to watch at another time when we cannot. Why would you cancel a show that brings joy into the homes of so many. The hosts are brilliant, their chemistry makes the show fun and dynamic. We are amused, entertained, as well as educated. I cannot imagine why we need another hour of news, I will not be watching Good Morning America. We have been faithful watchers for seven years, this is just so disappointing. There are plenty of news shows bringing what is mostly… Read more »
I am so sad to hear they are not coming back, i love that show and the cast they always made me laugh and i liked the way they helped each be there for each other. Thank you for everything. Good luck to all
A HUGE mistake. Why didn’t they just hire two new co-hosts? I never watch Good Morning America but have taped The Chew every day for seven years. What a shame, and shame on ABC.
Well I could cry… I’m an ole college professor.. I’m now 70 and pretty much housebound. I love people n love life n love to Laugh… the ‘CHEW’ is my ‘go to’ feel HAPPY place. I told my family, just last night, that the ‘CHEW’ makes me happy like ‘Andy griffith’ did.. I looked forward everyday to watch it..just a breath of fresh air in s world striff with pain n wars n hate…. I felt the hosts were my personal ‘buddies!’ This ole woman ain’t happy!!! Janie Lay.. Little Rock, AR.
We are beyond disappointed this funny, informative show is going off the air! Ridiculous decision! Both my husband and I love to watch it. So sad when you loose this wonderful show and replace it with more GMA! Enough of GMA Already. We think ABC will regret making this decision.
Huge fan and of The Chew – this is horrible news.
I’m so upset to see you all go .I very much enjoyed your show everyday. You three have the best chemistry. One of the best things on TV ! So sad to see it end there will never be another show like this.
I’m sorry to see it go!!! It’s been something to look forward to after an hour of mostly depressing news. It was fun to watch what Carla, Clinton, and Michael, with some imagination, and some effort. Guys know that you will be missed
I was very disappointed to hear about “The Chew” being cancelled at the end of this season. I hope that neither Daphne Oz’s departure nor the bad press about Mario Batali were not the reasons for this decision. I am retired and watch “The Chew” every day (either in real time or I record it to watch later in the day if I miss it). I enjoy the camaraderie among the hosts and I learn a lot from the recipes and crafts demonstrated on the show every day. I like the variety of guests who have visited and I enjoy… Read more »
Ilove watching the chew ever afternoon i am so sad they are cancel
i personaly do not like show replacing the chew love watching the chew now the othere two hostst are gone so why cancel the chew when they help so many people wish all the best in the futuer
I love The Chew! So sad it’s being cancelled. It’s a show that’s always pleasant to watch. Besides the food ideas, the hosts have a lot of fun which in turn gives the viewers a lot of laughs. Also you don’t have to listen to others being criticized or beaten down which happens on certain other shows!
I love the Chew! I gained a lot of culinary tips with every show. I don’t watch GMA, so they lost a viewer. I hope another network picks them up!
A nice light hearted show, hosts are funny, recipes are great, and stories are humorous. Why add more time to GMA? With all the evil happening in the world, can’t ABC put aside their greed and allow an hour of The Chew to give us a smile? Seriously, how much are you losing for the sake of good will to those loyal viewers? Perhaps another nerwork pick them up and gain my loyalty.
I watch GMA EVERY day, but I don’t need another hour of it in the afternoon, I want my crazy people back.. Their fun, funny and they love each others..Your making a big mistake.. Their are many more stations I can watch…I do miss Mario, but it didn’t stop me from watching the Chew.. Where I live (Delaware channel 6 here} we have news from 12 t0 1p.m. then the Chew and more news from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and you want to give me more news?? No thanks, I want the Chew.. Do U hear me Carla, Michael,… Read more »
Am so sad to see the show being cancelled. Being 75 with a 76 year old suitor it was one of the things we shared, our love of The Chew. There will be no GMA. Clinton, Carla and Michael were highlight of our day.
