It’s official. The animated Clarence TV show has been cancelled. There will be no season four on Cartoon Network. The voice cast includes Spencer Rothbell, Tom Kenny, Sean Giambrone, Katie Crown, Roger Craig Smith, Eric Edelstein, and Grace Kaufman.
“Head of Story” Rothbell, who took over as the voice of Clarence, after creator Skyler Page departed the Cartoon Network production, confirmed season three will be the last. In a bit of good news, though, Rothbell also said that season three episodes will air into 2018. In addition, the animated TV show will have a proper TV series finale.
About Clarence | Cartoon Network
Clarence is an optimistic, spirited, lovable boy who sees the best in all things and wants to try everything. Because everything is amazing! Celebrate the best of childhood: epic dirt fights, awkward crushes, trampoline combat, sleepover pranks and secret tree forts all through the eyes of Clarence.
Clarence’s novel perspective transforms nearly any situation, however mundane, into the best day ever. No matter what happens, good or bad, nothing brings Clarence down.
Clarence shares his adventures with his remarkable group of friends and family. His two best friends include the scrappy Sumo (Tom Kenny, Adventure Time) and the cautious Jeff (Sean Giambrone, The Goldbergs). Keeping Clarence contained is the responsibility of his sassy and patient mom Mary (Katie Crown) and her laid-back boyfriend Chad (Eric Edelstein).
Set in Aberdale, a charming small-town, Clarence’s stories are inspired by the triumphs and tragedies of childhood. Although, in Clarence’s hands, these stories always veer off the main road, if not off the map entirely.
Spencer Rothbell on the Clarence TV Show Cancellation

HELLO EVERYONE!
I just wanted to address some questions about Clarence. Sadly the third season will be the last; we were not renewed past Season 3. Having said that, there are still a LOT of new episodes coming – Clarence will be premiering through 2018! Season 3 has some really cool episodes in it, including some of my favorites that we’ve ever done. Expect guest stars, callbacks, returning characters, character development, experiments with format, and other fun surprises!
Some people were concerned about the series having a proper ending, but no need to worry about that either! The season ending should serve as a proper series ending as well. Of course there will always be ideas and routes I wish we could have gotten to, but this season has some really stellar episodes that expand on the universe of the show and its characters in a fun way that we haven’t really done before.
I also wanted to say an immense thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who works/worked on the show, and to anyone who is a fan. Making a TV show is a group effort and the dedication to craft and love that went into Clarence is what makes it such a special show and experience to work on. I won’t get too sappy, but before Clarence I was living in a van down by the river, and eating clumps of dirt and old tires for sustenance, so it really means a lot to me! For real though, I was very inexperienced and I learned a ton on the show! This week will be my last Clarence voice record session, so it’ll be almost exactly 4 years of working on the show. It’s become a huge part of my life, and the crew like a second family to me. Thanks to everyone who has helped me learn and made me laugh along the way.
As for the future, I’m not sure specifically what I’ll be doing beyond more creative TV work – probably writing and voice acting, and eventually developing some pilot pitches of my own! I will try to post more about all that here when I find the time.
Until next time!
-Spencer
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Clarence TV show? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for season four on Cartoon Network?
Clarence was the only show my family and I all truly enjoyed together. It was so special and unique. I am very, very sad to hear of its cancellation. This is terrible!
Clarence was the best. Each character and the relationships they had were so unique and special, yet so nostalgic. The innocence yet comedic value of this show will never be matched. WHAT A SHOW! Deeply saddened by its cancellation.
I am so upset that Clarence was cancelled. It was one of the better cartoons. I loved watching to see what they get into. They were children, but entertaining. It reminded me a lot of my own imagination, the personality I had as a child, and just the way we played. I think the cartoon showed children they could have real adventures outside playing without playing video games for hours. I liked how they were different from each other, but could tolerate each other’s differences and build a friendship.
I’m absolutely sick about the cancellation of this show. I adored the characters and storylines. All the best shows get cancelled early. I will miss Clarence, Sumo, and Jeff. They often reminded me to find the beauty in life and enjoy it to the fullest. This sucks.
Just soo sad, as not only a mother ( of a now soldier)AND a grown up toon fiend its so sad that EVERY SINGLE GREAT TOON GETS AXED! But the same old “copy every others” stay forever. Who are the old fogies making these decitions , its time to retire there is just barely anything left thats inovative and origional on any more. Thank God in heaven Craig of the creek has come and given me a little Clerance back. Its sad i think more adults are watching toons then children and it upsets us more( so funny) but true.… Read more »
It is very sad that this show was cancelled better then most on cartoon network. This show reminded me of when I was younger and my son has loved it from the beginning.
Quick reply…. Only 3 seasons Cartoon Network? Seriously?? What an outright shame! One of the best cartoons my family and I have watched together. Original content, original themes, fantastic characters…I could go on. I really thought Clarence was CN’s best and most popular cartoon. I hope it wasn’t other stuff outside the show itself that got it cancelled. The creator leaving the show probably meant impending doom. But honestly if I didn’t read that in the news and inter web I likely would not have known. We don’t watch much new CN stuff anymore since Clarence, Regular Show and Adventure… Read more »
Oh my god! I wish they never canceled it! I thought it was weird at first but it grew on me in such a way that I wanted to literally watch it forever. We’re on season three and the last few episodes until it will be over for us. The teacher and Clarence’s mom were my two favorites including Clarence himself of course who is mine and is probably everyone’s all time favorite. I wish I watched the show sooner, it somehow brings nostalgia out of everyone from 90’s kids to 2000’s kids, to my mom who was a 60’s… Read more »
I couldn’t agree more with you. Even though I know it’s just a show, a part of my heart broke when I saw the “Thank you for watching” message at the end of the very last episode (prior to that I had no idea I was watching the very last episode). I was so depressed. I love Clarence so much. He epitomizes everything that is great about the human race and does so in a unique and entertaining way. The fact that he gets so much joy out of helping others and animals is something I will always admire. The… Read more »
My family and I really, really loved Clarence and the gang. It really showed the creative side to children and the imagination of childhood. I relived some childhood memories, It Should have been renewed. We will miss it sooooo much. It was a great journey. Thank you all.
What a terrible decision! Clarence is one of the only, possibly only, shows on cable television that my 9 year old son and husband and I all happily watch together. It’s a fantastic, witty show. Major loss for all of us who looked forward to watching it. Guess we’ll just stick with watching Netflix….
I am so bummed…. Clarence was one of the best cartoons on CN, I will miss it :((
They cancelled the show just so they could make teen titans go popular.I thought you would like to know
My kids love Clarence. They are very sad about it being canceled. Clarence always sends a good message m.
Cartoon Network is making a big mistake. Clarence is my favourite TV Show, Now I don’t even feel like watching TV anymore. I really hope and pray that Cartoon Network will bring back Clarence and Regular Show…
Please pleae please!!! Don’t cancel clarence! It is a show that my sons and i have started bonding over. Even my wife loves it and we all sit down as a family to watch it.There arent many shows like that left on TV these days. What can we do to save the show? How can we start a letter writing campaign to save or bring back the show? Some one help.
