What’s This TV Show About?

Airing on the SundanceTV cable channel, Cleverman stars Hunter Page-Lochard, Rob Collins, Iain Glen, Frances O’Connor, Deborah Mailman, Tasma Walton, Rarriwuy Hick, Jada Alberts, Rachael Blake, Tony Briggs, Clarence Ryan, Taylor Ferguson, Rob Collins, Stef Dawson, Ryan Corr, and Jack Charles. The supernatural drama draws inspiration from Australian Aboriginal mythological traditions. Set in the near future — when beings of Aboriginal legend live among humans — the story moves between two worlds: The City and The Zone. In the “regular world” of The City, uniformed, armed Containment Officers patrol the streets to keep people “safe” from Hairypeople, whom the government deems subhuman. Only the Cleverman — a chosen one — has the power to reunite these two worlds and discern the real evil behind a murderous spree terrorizing everyone.

Telly’s Take

Although season two premiered with low numbers (even for a small cable network), Cleverman is a joint production between SundanceTV and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, so its success down under will play into whether it is cancelled or renewed for a third season. Word is that it’s not doing well there either. I’ll keep a hungry eye on the ratings but I suspect that Cleverman won’t see a third season.
