After seven years on the beat, the show’s over for Detective Lily Rush (Kathryn Morris). CBS has officially cancelled Cold Case.
Each episode of Cold Case begins by showing an unsolved crime from the past. The scene then flashes forward to the present day and a group of homicide detectives try to piece together what really happened, using old evidence and new interviews. The series stars Morris, Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry, and Tracie Thoms.
Cold Case began in September of 2003 and quickly became a staple of the CBS Sunday night schedule. The crime drama had a successful first season and, by season two, was averaging a 3.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 15.1 million viewers. For the next couple seasons, total viewership fell a bit but the all-important demo numbers rose, reaching a 3.8 in season four.
Unfortunately the ratings have come down quite a bit since then. In season five, the show averaged a 2.9 rating and about 12 million viewers. Last season, Cold Case sank lower, to an average of a 2.7 rating and CBS made a choice between renewing ailing Without a Trace or Cold Case. They chose to keep Cold Case but may have regretted it pretty quickly. This season, the show’s ratings dropped even further to a 2.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.6 million viewers.

So, while the overall viewership isn’t terrible, the demo numbers are and that’s what brings the ad dollars. CBS often has the most total viewers, but they are often lacking in the 18-49 demo department.
To no surprise, CBS has cancelled Cold Case after seven years on the air. The show won’t be back for season eight next fall. Sadly, the show is not available on DVD. It’s believed that securing the rights for the show’s extensive use of period music is problematic.

The shows that took up half of Cold Cases’s time,that’s probably why people stopped watching.You could not count on watching it/taping it on time.

What a HORRIBLE decision by CBS. Cold Case was an excellent show. They talk about all of these polls and how many viewers there is. I have never been included on any poll, so how do they really knowc how many of us are watching. I REALLY HOPE A CABLE CHANNEL picks up this show and continues on with it. I feel that Sunday night is a problem due to we have football games that run late. So Cold Case was on later in the night. Viewers like the lineup that they have for a night. When a show gets pushed into a different hour it “upsets the cart”
THE SHOW NEVER CAME ON AT THE RIGHT TIME BECAUSE IT WAS ALWAYS FREAKING DELAYED BY FOOTBALL LIKE AMAZING RACE. THIS IS SOME SERIOUS BULL****. i The delays got worse and worse eact year. I mean sometimes it didn’t come on till a hour and a half later . If at all.
I have been wondering what happened to my favorite program — had to consult the Internet to find out it was cancelled. Why did you cancel it and why didn’t you let your viewers know????

How ironic that Cold Case became a cold case of its own since we had to dig around on the internet to find out where it was.After waiting endlessly for its return we decided to investigate ourselves . And did not like the result . We have watched this show faithfully, and are truly going to miss it . We are so tired of good good shows like this being yanked off the air. I so agree with you guys!!! I had to do the same thing on the internet to find out about it. I am so upset with CBS. Excellent show that WAS NOT a silly reality show and they go and cancel it. I really really hope a CABLE CHANNEL picks it up and continues on with it. It’s all about the top execs money for their wallets and NOT WHAT THE FANS WANT, they have no concern for what we like. I am very disappointed that Cold Case and Without a Trace were canceled. Loved both shows. Not much to watch in the new shows.
Agree with the previous comments. I too feel cheated out of a very clean and thought-provoking program. It is very unfortunate that viewers have to go online to research themselves what happened to one of our favourite shows. I’ll be signing the petition to have it return …
10 million people know Cold Case got cheated from a 8th season….I saw the ratings for the season final # 17th 1o million viewers…. It was wr0ng of CBS to cancel a series in the top 20….THERE IS A PETITION FOR COLD CASE TO GET A 8TH SEASON

Now I just found out about Ghost whisperer, You people are probably fixing to loose a lot of your viewers. Hope you enjoy the garbage you put on now. TV is going to pot and you’re helping it, Have fun. CBS is boycotted in my home as of today, THANKS A LOT FOR CANCELING GOOD SHOWS.
It’s bad to find out from the computer that the show of all times is cancelled. There was no warning of any kind on the last season or on television. The best show in a long time has been cancelled for no reason we can see. They have stupid crap on tv now and you can’t keep a decent show on tv, WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE. Been waiting all year for it’s return.

They should have developed the characters personal lives a little more. Rush’s love life should have been more central. This is just like CSI – after a while, the only thing holding you to the drama is wondering what the writer’s are going to reveal about the main characters. The main concept of the show does get stale without this. Why didn’t CBS at least finish the season
i love this show so much im truly on to miss the entire case. Im a big tv buff i have notice alot of the case numbers have been on guest appearance show were is my lily she a great actress would love to see her do some great work again . Just thing back to another great show the profiler. Guess i have to wait and see what jerry have up his selves sure we will be hearing something soon them reality shows are taking over .
So sad to see the show cancelled. I was looking forward to seeing it on Sundays again. I totally loved this show.
I think people stopped watching because amazing race went over at least 30 minutes every Sunday night!
