After seven years on the beat, the show’s over for Detective Lily Rush (Kathryn Morris). CBS has officially cancelled Cold Case.
Each episode of Cold Case begins by showing an unsolved crime from the past. The scene then flashes forward to the present day and a group of homicide detectives try to piece together what really happened, using old evidence and new interviews. The series stars Morris, Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry, and Tracie Thoms.
Cold Case began in September of 2003 and quickly became a staple of the CBS Sunday night schedule. The crime drama had a successful first season and, by season two, was averaging a 3.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 15.1 million viewers. For the next couple seasons, total viewership fell a bit but the all-important demo numbers rose, reaching a 3.8 in season four.
Unfortunately the ratings have come down quite a bit since then. In season five, the show averaged a 2.9 rating and about 12 million viewers. Last season, Cold Case sank lower, to an average of a 2.7 rating and CBS made a choice between renewing ailing Without a Trace or Cold Case. They chose to keep Cold Case but may have regretted it pretty quickly. This season, the show’s ratings dropped even further to a 2.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.6 million viewers.

So, while the overall viewership isn’t terrible, the demo numbers are and that’s what brings the ad dollars. CBS often has the most total viewers, but they are often lacking in the 18-49 demo department.
To no surprise, CBS has cancelled Cold Case after seven years on the air. The show won’t be back for season eight next fall. Sadly, the show is not available on DVD. It’s believed that securing the rights for the show’s extensive use of period music is problematic.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see the series go? What could have been done to help the TV show’s ratings?

please don;t cancelled cold case good show?some show should not be cancelled thank you so much take off the show that don;t have a big rate so please don;t take cold case off .
I think that since pushing their time slot later on Sundays is what hurt. This show is GREAT and shouldn’t be canceled because of a bad decision on CBS part. This cancellation literally disgusts me. Such an excellent show that I couldn’t wait until Sunday nights for. Thanks CBS for ruining many people’s Sunday evenings. And please spare us the “Oh we are putting something better on” crap. There was no better.
I am sick over the cancellation of this quality show. It seems that tacky reality shows featuring shallow and uniteresting people is now considered creative. I will miss the gang – as many before them.
Goodbye CBS you can bite me.
I think that cancelling cold case is wrong they should have shifted it to another night. lilly rush and valens are great in the parts they played. Sometime I do not know what these big heads at cbs are thinking, first it was without a trace then it is cold case.
Cindy Carlson, said it all thank you Cindy thes stupid reality shows . are for the birds.
probably will have my dish cut off and watch dvd or just read…..COLD CASE THAT IS A SHAME
SHAME SHAME SHAME
Cold case lost it’s ratings because of sports always running over their time slot. You should have moved this show to a different night. I will miss this show slot. I am very dissapointed that it was cancelled. I hope they don’t leave us hanging without a real ending like without a trace!!!!!!!!
Sadly, but not unexpectedly, the last network standing (compared to ABC/NBC) has decided to pitch to the lowest common denomenator. Just the way things go in the US nowadays. Bummer. I lost some hope for CBS when they actually hired David Caruso-but with Cold Case and the FBi gone now-not to mention W. Peterson, the best show on TV now is Criminal Minds. I just hope the execs and bean counters have some appreciation for talent, hard work, outstanding story line, etc., etc. It seems that intelligent television is being absorbed by the BORG of mindless, annoying, so-called “realiy” drivel-which… Read more »
This is not cool. I’m already missing Danny Pino. Hope to see him somewhere soon!!
i think danny pino is very good looking but Cold Case were nothing without
Kathryn Morris.i love her.and without Cold Case i couldn´t see her anymore.
and that is a world ending for me!!!
i would just love to say that i loved the show and am really sorry to see it end specially in such a way that it was never concluded…it was just cut off…the plot, the music, everything was just great i wish i continued!!
I can’t believe it’s being cancelled!! I love the show…the quality has never faltered.
This is one of the few quality dramas available on network television. CBS is making a huge mistaken in canceling it.
There wasn’t a series Finale. CBS cancelled the show. I hope another station decides to pick this show up.
Cold Case should have been moved to a time when it would not have been jammed into late night hours by sports…..not sure what CBS was thinking but Cold Case was a class show that would have thrived in a different time spot.
@admin
When did the series finale air? What’s the title of it?
@Pikachu: 5/2 “Shattered”
