The struggle (and story) of the Bowman family ends tonight. The Colony TV show has been cancelled after three seasons but, would you have watched more episodes and a fourth season? Should it have been dropped?
A USA Network sci-fi drama, Colony stars Josh Holloway, Sarah Wayne Callies, Tory Kittles, Peter Jacobson, and Alex Neustaedter. The story unfolds in the near-future, in a world where citizens are under military occupation by the Colony Transitional Authority, as part of a large extraterrestrial invasion. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and wife Katie (Callies) were raising their daughter and two sons in Los Angeles, but were separated from the younger boy during the invasion and did everything they could to get him back. The third season kicked off six months after the season two finale, with Will and Katie rebuilding their family in the world beyond the walls. They begin a journey during which they uncover the truth behind the occupation. Once again, this family finds themselves having to choose sides.
The show debuted in January 2016 and got off to a positive start with a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.36 million viewers. The series lost some steam over the course of the season. The first year averaged a 0.38 rating with 1.13 million and it was renewed for a second season.
Season two of Colony launched in January 2017 and the 13 episodes ended up averaging a 0.26 demo rating with 814,000 viewers. Compared to season one, that was down by 31% in the demo and 28% in viewership. Still, Colony was renewed for a third year even before the season two finale aired.
USA didn’t start running season three until May 2018. Thus far, the third season has averaged a 0.17 demo rating with 672,000 viewers. Compared to last year, that’s down by 36% and 18%, respectively.
Colony is currently one of USA Network’s lower-rated scripted series but, other shows aren’t doing that much better. While it’s not a complete surprise that USA cancelled Colony, they could have easily renewed it to wrap up the story with a final season. Unfortunately, they opted to end the series after three seasons and 36 episodes.
What do you think? Do you think that USA should have cancelled the Colony TV show? Should the series have been renewed for a fourth (and final) season or, is season three a good place to end it?
This is/was my all time favorite science fiction TV show and I’m in mourning because the network should have gone one more finale season. I think a season 4 would have had the ratings to support the network’s cost for the show. Frankly, I think Netflix or ScyFy channel should pick it up for a 4th season because I still think it could recover to big a big hit. I hope like the “V TV Series” it it brought back sooner rather than later…
I’m still angry they didn’t wrap up the story up for those of us who are loyal viewers of Colony which is one of the better sci fi series on tv. I say it is as good as Falling Skies by Spielberg
What in the world are they thinking, canceling a great syfy show!! Please some other channel pick it up.
My husband and I wonder why we bother watching any series on USA network. They cancel series without warning, without wrap-up, showing no respect for the loyal audience. We see no reason to support their advertisers if the network doesn’t support us.
How the heck can they cancel a show and not let the production Co. have time to end it.
Right before the big battle, we’re left hanging.
So sad.
Darnit! To be honest, I think they show should’ve had more extraterrestrial scenes. Nevertheless, I’m hooked. Or at least I was. Darnit! Wish some other network would pick up Season 4
We’d watch more if we ever saw the aliens. Hard to have a show about Earth being taken over by aliens when you never see them.
I’d watch if we saw more of the aliens. We have very little idea of what’s going on without them.
Congratulations to USANetwork who has now become the new ABC and SYFY, cancelling great shows because the leadership has no foresight, imagination or understanding of what makes a great story or series.
Bring on more SHARKNADO!!!! or a host of other ABCshows that are meaningless and only forward their hidden agendas.
We love Colony!! The war was just beginning! I bet viewership would have gone up big time for the 4th season. Bad move USA!
YES! It’s only one of maybe 5 shows I watch religiously every year. It is just now hitting the climax and all the answers we have been waiting for are now not coming. It’s not our fault that the majority of people are idiots who prefer reality TV. Please don’t leave us hanging….
I should know better. Never expect the good stuff to last while all manner of crap reality shows go season after season.
HOW COULD YOU CANCEL THE SERIES WITHOUT ANSWERS? WHY???? I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT, WHEN HUMANS AND ALIENS WOULD FIGHT TO THE END!!!!! AFTER THREE SEASONS FANS DESERVE A CONCLUSION TO THE FIGHT FOR EXISTENCE, THIS FAMILY HAS FOUGHT FOR. I absolutely loved this series. After I cut the cable cord I purchased Roku so I could watch Colomy. I want to know if WILL, Katie, Bram, and Gracie live or if they die in vain with the rest of the human race. If you care about your network stop doing this to the people who watch USA… Read more »
Yes I would have kept watching! I loved this show! I liked it better than Walking Dead (and I love Walking Dead!). It seems like every time there’s a truly good sci-if drama (if anyone remembers a show called “The Invasion?”) then just as the plot gets bigger, the story starts to unfold, it gets canceled. I think maybe what happened is that it started getting to similar to shows like “Falling Skies,” which I somehow couldn’t stop watching, despite actually disliking the show’s drama and flat plot. Colony had so much potential. Season 2 had me so hooked once… Read more »
