The struggle (and story) of the Bowman family ends tonight. The Colony TV show has been cancelled after three seasons but, would you have watched more episodes and a fourth season? Should it have been dropped?
A USA Network sci-fi drama, Colony stars Josh Holloway, Sarah Wayne Callies, Tory Kittles, Peter Jacobson, and Alex Neustaedter. The story unfolds in the near-future, in a world where citizens are under military occupation by the Colony Transitional Authority, as part of a large extraterrestrial invasion. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and wife Katie (Callies) were raising their daughter and two sons in Los Angeles, but were separated from the younger boy during the invasion and did everything they could to get him back. The third season kicked off six months after the season two finale, with Will and Katie rebuilding their family in the world beyond the walls. They begin a journey during which they uncover the truth behind the occupation. Once again, this family finds themselves having to choose sides.
The show debuted in January 2016 and got off to a positive start with a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.36 million viewers. The series lost some steam over the course of the season. The first year averaged a 0.38 rating with 1.13 million and it was renewed for a second season.
Season two of Colony launched in January 2017 and the 13 episodes ended up averaging a 0.26 demo rating with 814,000 viewers. Compared to season one, that was down by 31% in the demo and 28% in viewership. Still, Colony was renewed for a third year even before the season two finale aired.
USA didn’t start running season three until May 2018. Thus far, the third season has averaged a 0.17 demo rating with 672,000 viewers. Compared to last year, that’s down by 36% and 18%, respectively.
Colony is currently one of USA Network’s lower-rated scripted series but, other shows aren’t doing that much better. While it’s not a complete surprise that USA cancelled Colony, they could have easily renewed it to wrap up the story with a final season. Unfortunately, they opted to end the series after three seasons and 36 episodes.
What do you think? Do you think that USA should have cancelled the Colony TV show? Should the series have been renewed for a fourth (and final) season or, is season three a good place to end it?
I looked forward to this show. I think the lower ratings were due in part to there being around 18 months between season 2&3. People loose focus and by the time season 3 rolls around they are watching something else.
Good show, I’m disappointed that it was canceled for a 4th season.
I hope they find a way to bring out back.
All TV series are a mere vehicle for advertising, the business case in the end. With deopling numbers, advertisers go elsewhere. So, even if the story could develop more and would be far more interesting to watch then, say GH or such, no executive will decide to make a fourth series. That’s the fate of all SciFi series, they will never ever get into the high numbers and its viewers will never ever be a majority viewer group. So there you have if: most SciFi does not live beyond one series, so this was already an exception. Too bad though,… Read more »
absolutely it had to be renewed…first of all season 3 was the most interesting from the beginning and opened to a season 4th even more interesting; sometimes ratings are not reflecting the show quality and anyway the rate was’nt good but better than others. i think another network should pick up this serie and give us a4th season with the war between alien that is a promising plot. and josh and the others gave very good performances and all of us love them. it was a lack of respect towards the viewers to stop the series without a 4th season… Read more »
I totally agree. To disrespect your viewers by dropping this show when it was just getting to the point of the entire storyline, the battle between the Aliens and the affect on the earth and mankind. It is a very good and exciting series and I was entirely invested in it. I literally cried when I found out it was canceled. USA has gone way down in my estimation. I will be wary of getting into another series on your network in the future when you dump a series with no resolution to the storyline or respect for your loyal… Read more »
Should NOT cancel this show!!! Was loking forward to next season!!
The final was not a final,so please, give us another season or at the last few episode to end it properly
This is one of the best show of 2018. Please, cancel all other shows and let this one run
Should of had a 4th season to flesh things out.
Only show I watched on USA. Bummed to see it go!
I loved this show
I can’t believe it’s been canceled
It’s right on track for a decade of awesome SYFY
It’s had every conceivable potential to be a standard bearer
Really good show. Maybe Netflix will at least give us an ending.
DEFINITELY would have watched a season 4. One of the best shows on TV. Come on Netflix, you need shows like this.
Something surely is broken in TV land when a gem of a show such like Colony is left to cough and sputter out with a cliffhanger (or is it an open chasm) of a series finale. Why so long between seasons? It feels like very little was done to keep it vibrant and in the minds of the viewing public (I suppose that is the marketing dept’s job). Such imaginative, such decent story telling, such characters that inspire and give us viewers a sense of belonging on the journey. The quality of the production and show itself was not in… Read more »
we can all send request to netflix about colony season 4 and maybe netflix will continue for another season i already requested and i drop another request for torchwood season 5.
I’m upset. I’ve put what seems like 10 years into this three season show biding my time waiting to find out why all of this has happened. Finally, we get to a point of pivotal consequence and they rip it out for under us. I’m going to take a cold shower, watch Game of Thrones for the 50th time, and try to forget this ever happened.
I’m so mad! I love the show! And a cliffhanger?? I’m sick of networks not caring about fans. If you’re gonna cancel, which is usually all over money, at least give the show a proper ending! Not every show can be number 1 in a world with a million channels and shows. Makes me want to quit tv all together except premium cable.
