Next week, TNT’s Dallas will complete its third season — the first full one without JR Ewing. How’s the TV show done in the ratings? Will it be renewed for a fourth season or will it be cancelled instead?
Airing on Monday nights, Dallas continues to follow the machinations of the dysfunctional and powerful Ewing clan. The cast includes Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo, Brenda Strong, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Mitch Pileggi, Emma Bell, Kuno Becker, and Juan Pablo Di Pace.
The third season began airing in late February and the first episode was down by 11% when compared to the second season opener. That was a reasonable decline but then the second installment dropped by 27%. The numbers dropped even lower as the season progressed.
Year-to-year, Dallas is down by 26% in viewership and down by 38% in the 18-49 demographic. It’s one of TNT’s lowest-rated scripted series and that’s not a good sign for the show’s future prospects. It also has a large cast so that means it’s not a cheap series either.
On the positive side, there’s some financial incentive to keep the show going. Dallas is produced by Warner Horizon Television which, like TNT, is part of the Time Warner corporation. Also, at the end of season three, there will only be 40 episodes. That’s not enough for a syndication package so if the execs are on the fence about whether to renew or cancel, that could work in the show’s favor.
I suspect that TNT will renew Dallas for a fourth season but, with ratings like these, the show could certainly be cancelled.
But, what do you think? Have you grown tired of the new Dallas TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
Update: TNT has cancelled Dallas after three seasons. Details here.
Please don’t cancel Dallas! I watched the original Dallas and really enjoy the new series as well. I do not watch many shows on TV but have not missed an episode in the past 3 seasons.
Please renew it! I have been watching Dallas since the very first season and always look forward to the exciting drama it provides!
Dallas is a GREAT night time soap. It’s as good as the original Melrose Place. Renew it!!! You just can’t leave us with the season cliffhangers without wrapping them up!!!
I loved Dallas when it originally was shown. I have to say, this series has remained true to the original. It has all of the twists and turns and cliff-hangers of the original.
There is not enough true entertainment these days. It would really be a shame to cancel this series.
For all of us true “Dallas” fans, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep it going.
Sincerely, Linda In Idaho
Please do not cancel Dallas. I raced home last night for the finale. I can’t believe Christopher is dead, maybe he got out of the car. Putting John Ross and Emma’s grandmother as partners will be great. They will rock Dallas. This is a great show!Every time there is a really good show it gets canceled, make you want to just read books. Elena being pregnant by Nickolas or Jon Ross! Nickolas the head up the cartel, how much better does it get? But to put Jon Ross & Emma’s grandmother as a team is priceless. I have watched Judith… Read more »

Do not cancel Dallas! The public needs to know when the Series is aired. The network needs to advertise the series in advance so the public knows when and where to watch. With consistent advertising, this series will not only prevail, but increase viewers in all demographics. Please keep this series on the air. We love Dallas!!!
Don’t Cancel! My husband and I love this series. If you cancel, it would be like JR dying all over again. Please, keep it going. I love John Ross! He is a great replacement for JR. I see him evolving into a real stinker. 🙂
I’ve watched Dallas since the first show. I have it programed to record on m DVR just in case I’m not home. Renew it
Renew it–the idea of JR having a daughter is intriguing; also with the death of Christopher, it can play to does Bobby still maintain his good guy image or does he turn to his darker side like JR told him he needed to? While this current incarnation may not run as long as the first I would love to see it goat least 2-3 more years so that in the end John Ross does what JR couldn’t –finally win complete control of South Fork and Ewing Oil/EwingGlobal proving he is his daddy’s boy–from tip to tail.
I just love the show Dallas and have watched every episode. I watched the original Dallas in my 20’s. Dallas is the only tv show that I watch during the week. Renew it please! It is such good drama. The characters in the new Dallas are just as good as the original characters and so is the plot. Please do not cancell it.
I think the show should be renewed.
I watched Dallas from the start. I had a 10 foot dish. I would watch it 4 times, once on each time zone. the new Dallas I record on dvd and watch all week till the next one. Please continue the show.
Keep it!
RENEW- Life without Dallas is so boring besides give the writers a chance to really shake things up! Somewhere deep inside of all of us we have a fascination with the great state of Texas. What better way to deliver then DALLAS——-
