Next week, TNT’s Dallas will complete its third season — the first full one without JR Ewing. How’s the TV show done in the ratings? Will it be renewed for a fourth season or will it be cancelled instead?
Airing on Monday nights, Dallas continues to follow the machinations of the dysfunctional and powerful Ewing clan. The cast includes Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo, Brenda Strong, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Mitch Pileggi, Emma Bell, Kuno Becker, and Juan Pablo Di Pace.
The third season began airing in late February and the first episode was down by 11% when compared to the second season opener. That was a reasonable decline but then the second installment dropped by 27%. The numbers dropped even lower as the season progressed.
Year-to-year, Dallas is down by 26% in viewership and down by 38% in the 18-49 demographic. It’s one of TNT’s lowest-rated scripted series and that’s not a good sign for the show’s future prospects. It also has a large cast so that means it’s not a cheap series either.
On the positive side, there’s some financial incentive to keep the show going. Dallas is produced by Warner Horizon Television which, like TNT, is part of the Time Warner corporation. Also, at the end of season three, there will only be 40 episodes. That’s not enough for a syndication package so if the execs are on the fence about whether to renew or cancel, that could work in the show’s favor.
I suspect that TNT will renew Dallas for a fourth season but, with ratings like these, the show could certainly be cancelled.
But, what do you think? Have you grown tired of the new Dallas TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
Update: TNT has cancelled Dallas after three seasons. Details here.
Please don’t cancel, if I miss I watch on Demand.
I’ve watched Dallas since the very beginning with good old JR – and even though the younger generation is kind of flaky – it’s “inspiring” to see the way they think – so different from Josh and Miss Elly’s time – but why not leave it on – some of the newer stuff that’s coming up on TV is so gross that I’ve always looked forward to Monday night and Dallas – I even watch Dancing with the Stars “ON DEMAND” so I can watch Dallas, (since they both come on at the same time here in Washington). There are… Read more »
I just read DALLAS has been cancelled. What can we do to get this decision reversed? It is one of the very best shows on TV–very well written and well portrayed by outstanding actors. They do a great job of merging the past DALLAS characters with the
present generation.
Keep Dallas on. I look forward to the next show the second the present show ends. It’s too long to wait one week, really difficult for the months spread to return. Now, just bam, I read it’s possible to be cancelled. Very dis-hearting. Like having a relationship, you get dumped on and don’t want to take up with another. So, don’t get hooked on watching another series again.
Don’t cancel the show plssss….. We love it…..
This is by far one of the best TV shows on television. I wish there were MORE episodes!! This is the ONLY television show I won’t miss!!! So sick of all the other reality crap on tv. Please keep DALLAS coming…I will try to do my part in getting people to watch!!! LOL!
I really think the show should be given a proper chance to take off. It has a hard act to follow, after the loss of many original characters (especially JR). Sue Ellen and Bobby are still there and Cliff (partly).
Please give this show a chance to develop into a new audience. I would hate this series to just end pointlessly, but if it does thank you that we got to watch a few series again. Thank you to the old stars returning and the new stars stepping up in those shoes.
Keep it going!
I love Dallas!! Watched it on Friday nights on CBS to begin with and love this 2nd Dallas on TNT! Please keep it on as I look forward to see what the Ewings and Barnes are up to next. Gotta see what Cliff does when he is out and what becomes of Pamela and John Ross! But most of all they cannot leave us hanging with the bombing of Christopher’s vehicle and not knowing if he is dead or alive!! Best show on TV!!!
I love Dallas. I always have. I used to watch it over and over when I was a kid. I would truly hate to see Dallas cancelled.
No it should not. I love the show
Please, Please renew ‘Dallas’! It is such a great show and has a great cast. Season four appear to be great seasons and TNT should keep this show, marketed better and place it on a Friday or Saturday night instead of Monday nights. I bet the rating improve, and bring in another cast member such as Pricilla Presley of Victoria Principal will be a huge audience getter!
I’m so tired of all the reality crap on TV I want to be entertained with good old fashion TV come on TNT let’s get out of this reality rut and get back into real acting and Dallas offers us that week after week
Best show on TV. The only show I record. Keep it going.
I think it is fantastic and can’t believe this is happening ,to even contemplate cancelling the show is terrible I’ve watched Dallas since it first started years ago and I love the new show and it’s getting very exciting and I can’t wait to see john Ross fall in his ass just like his father please don’t stop showing this .
Please do not cancel, find another station. If I miss I watch on Demand. Always watched on Friday nights. Besides, what happen to Chris.
