The big night is finally here. The Ewings of Dallas are back on the air after 14 years away. Will this new series outlast the original or does it deserve to be quickly cancelled instead?
The new Dallas on TNT is a continuation of the primetime soap opera that began in 1978. John Ross (Josh Henderson) and Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe) are fighting over Southfork, just like their fathers (Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy) did back in the CBS days. Others in the cast include Linda Gray, Brenda Strong, Jordana Brewster, and Julie Gonzalo.
Is the new Dallas worth your time? Here’s what some of the critics are saying:
NY Daily News: “So we’ve got love and money both in play here, and soon they swirl together into a tale that’s got more kick than Texas chili made with live rattlesnakes. It’s also soapy, of course, not to mention campy. Hagman in particular hasn’t lost an ounce of his villainous sleaze. No one expects Dallas to have the kind of reach now that it had three decades ago. But between old fans who will enjoy a revisit and young folks who never even heard of Miss Ellie, TNT is placing a sound bet.”
TV Guide: “Unfortunately, these young ‘uns are not larger than life, paling next to the icons that bore them, buzzing around like gnats in the shadow of legends. Still, the comfort level in the new/old Dallas is considerable, as we gawk at which of the old-timers is still on their game and who are the worse for wear. (Linda Gray’s Sue Ellen seems especially mummified, given no help by the writers turning her into a most improbable politician and professional wet blanket. She was more fun when she drank.) The show’s predictably melodramatic rhythms and telegraphed twists will be like nectar to those still pining for this old-school style of skullduggery.”
USA Today: “Forget Dallas; they should have called it Thebes. You can find mummies who look fresher than this mold-encrusted relic, and who have newer ideas in their empty, embalmed heads. Not, of course, that this embarrassing throwback has any idea to offer beyond a desire to cash in on the standard-setting success of the CBS original in the 1980s… There will no doubt be some out there who so loved the original Dallas, they’ll still find this little “D” enchanting. There will be others who come for the camp value alone, from the wooden performances to the often risible dialogue. As for the rest of us, we can be grateful that a busy TV summer offers plenty of other choices.”
LA Times: “Then as now — and acknowledging some good work among the younger set, especially the Texas-born Henderson — it is Hagman’s show. To say there is no series here that would be worth watching without him is indeed only to point out another way in which the new Dallas is very much like the old… The pilot dawdles until the right word rouses [JR] back to action like a demon from his thousand-year sleep. His eyes light up, and the party starts.”
Hollywood Reporter: “The writing is not there. Neither is the acting. And the plot -– well, it’s not like that was a strong point of the original version anyway. But none of the elements is present, just soap bubbles and silliness. This is a remake that should never have been remade.”
STL Today: “TNT has wisely scheduled Dallas for 10 episodes, all completed before the premiere. More could be ordered, but at least the audience can be assured of one complete story arc. Executive producer Cynthia Cidre (Cane) and her team have provided many entry points for new viewers, and references they may not get are either explained or expendable. The young cast, especially the male leads, is appealing, and the show looks good, benefiting from shooting on location in Dallas. The storytelling was compelling enough to lead me to watch three episodes (TNT provided all 10) in a row.”
Tampa Bay Times: “Filmed for the HD world with better landscapes, better acting and slightly better writing, this newly retooled Dallas feels upgraded from the early, fumbling pace of the original series’ early days… I’m probably in the minority, but for me a world of oil leases, adultery and methane gas wasn’t quite enough to snare the attention of the iPad generation, anymore.”
So, the critics are quite mixed on the new Dallas series to say the least.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the original? Have you watched the new series? Will you go back to watch again?
Surprised by how good the new one is. Me-Likey VERY MUCH.
I love it. Give the show a chance people. Time is needed. Storyline wil get deeper with time. I am so sick of reality shows. Soaps rule. We all need a change.
JR would never ‘do in’ John Ross as he appears to be doing. Bobby must be getting senile to not check out who’s buying South Fork. When is someone going to tell Christopher that his mother was Sue Ellen’s sister? So he really is family, which John Ross keeps telling him that he isn’t. The series is okay so far but not a block-buster!
That is the only thing that bothers me about the new Dallas, I haven’t heard anyone say anything about him being Sue Ellen’s nephew. The way John Ross keeps throwing up he is not a real Ewing. As a matter of fact, does Sue Ellen even know he is her nephew because they have not had any scenes together and I’ve never heard her acknowledge him in any way that lets you know she even knows who he is…..
I was a fan of the original Dallas and am delighted to have it back. JR will never change and that is the way it should be. I am glad for the appearances of Cliff Barnes, Ray and Charlene. Nothing will ever surpass Dallas for those of us that never missed an episode and I look forward to Wednesday night. A few less commercials would be great as there is 5 minutes of commercials every ten minutes and that is nuts.
I love, love, LOVE the new Dallas!! I watched every episode of the old Dallas and this new one started just where the other one left off. There’s the same themes but updated for a new generation of viewers. I think the writing is brilliant and captures every aspect of the original Dallas. Larry Hagman has not missed a beat as the coniving JR. He is awesome! I hope they order more episodes after the first 10. I am so hooked already!
LOVE IT…..can’t wait for wednesdays…..yeah….dallas is back
Oh Hollywood, this is SO laughable. The opening 20 minutes was so pathetic, I shut it off and won’t watch again. Get a clue about what it looks like to drill an oil well to start with – as usual you completely misrepresent the process. If you think you can “sneak” onto a ranch and drill a well… well of course you do, you have no basis in reality!
I think some of the critics who dump on the new Dallas are a bunch of complete idiots. I love the new show, and it’s like going home to see your family after many years away. Great to see the old cast back again, and awesome to see the new generation come of age. I would like to see more J.R. and Sue Ellen scenes, though.
I love it! It fits right in with the times. I loved the old Dallas and am really enjoying the
New. Larry Hagman still has it as ol J.R. It was great seeing Ken Kercheval again. Also Josh Henderson is fun to watch as John Ross. Yay Dallas!!!!!
Thank goodness for entertainment. TV has needed a show like this again, and to those supposed critics that didn’t like it. Sounds like jealousy to me. They must be has beens or what nots that never made it in Hollywood and are taking there anger out on the show.
The key to a successful show is that it enteratains, no matter how campy or soapy. mmmm the original show ran for 14 years. Someone did something right. Good luck to the new show and to heck with hecklers!!! 🙂
AMEN!
I watched the new version twice and what I could not grasp (because of distraction in my home) I asked my daughters that live outside the home. Linda Gray, Patrick Duffy and Larry Hagman still has the hustfa. Ray (character) and Charlene Tilton please write there characters back into the story lines. The younguns are good but my loves from the past are sensational and they are carrying the show. Friday evening we watched the Season one, the first five episodes from 11:00pm TO 3:00am and those writers back then did not miss a heart beat! From beginning to end… Read more »
I LOVE IT, LOVE IT LOVE IT. THIS WAS A GREAT IDEA, I PREFER DALLAS over any other reality TV, better then the Kardashians, which I stopped watching long ago.
When I watched the old Dallas I was living in Romania and we never missed an episode, it was the only time we turn on the TV for Dallas only, back in communist Romania.
Now I live in LA and I am so happy that Dallas is back and I love all the actors the old and new cast. It is wonderful, I can’t wait till Wednesday. Love it.
Love it… Will come right in and start watching after good bible study.
Loved the original. Love the new version. I watched it 2ce then watched it again with my husband who enjoyed it.
I thought Sue Ellen is great. JR still has it. Still love Bobby. The plots in the plots in the plots just made me laugh.
Can’t wait for the next episode. Forget “reality” TV. This is fabulous!
The original was great prime time soap. I may be bias because I was starting a career in Dallas in the shows heyday. Like it or not they could only make it as Dallas and that is as it should be. Not crazy about the young guns but happy to get one more round of JR s wicked deals.
