Good news! Damages has been saved from cancellation and there will be a fourth and fifth seasons. Unfortunately, not all of the show’s fans will be able to see the new episodes.
Damages revolves around Patty Hewes (Glenn Close), a tough New York attorney. She takes on tough cases and will do just about anything to make sure her clients come out on top. Prominent castmembers have included Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan, Ted Danson, Zeljko Ivanek, Noah Bean, Anastasia Griffith, and Philip Bosco.
The FX series has been declining in the ratings for some time and the third season finale only drew 925,000 viewers. The cable channel said that they couldn’t afford to keep broadcasting the show based on those numbers. They also said they’d be open to some sort of partnership deal if Sony could find another buyer (ala the shared airings of Friday Night Lights between NBC and DirecTV).
DirecTV has come to the show’s rescue but is financing new episodes for exclusive airings, in a similar vein to the deal they made for Passions a couple years back. This means that viewers who don’t have DirecTV won’t be able to see the episodes.

“FX was very proud to have developed one of the best scripted series on television, but, in order to have a future, the show needed DirecTV and we are thrilled they stepped in,” said John Landgraf, President & General Manager, FX Networks. “Sony Pictures Television is a great production partner and we at FX Productions are excited for these next two seasons.”
Under the exclusive deal, DirecTV has ordered 20 new episodes of Damages that will play out over the course of two seasons. They’ll air on DirecTV’s exclusive 101 channel in 2011 and 2012. The satellite provider has also acquired the rights to rerun the first three seasons of Damages.
For those without DirecTV, the episodes will surely be released on DVD at some point.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that Damages has been saved? If you don’t already subscribe, would this news make you consider ordering DirecTV?

I am pissed off to say the least. I have been watching Damages from the beginning. I just recently moved and can not get Direct TV because I am a single mother raising two kids while going to college online. I had to move to the local cable company so I could get a bundle with internet access, phone and cable tv. So I guess loyal viewers like me are just screwed.
What is up with FX channel? It seems like all the good shows are being cancelled……. The Rich’s ….. Nip\Tuck……Dirt….. and now Damages. What is left for FX channel…. reruns and more reruns or maybe a few more reality shows.
really? a great drama is written and now politics and greedy exec’s have to ruin it for us? dangling carrot ********!
I think that this is ridiculous. The ratings will be even worse seeing as how you have a limited audience. I have dish network. I love it. I used to have Directv. It did not work out. Damages is one of my favorite shows. Guess I will just have to wait for dvd.
I, too, am a big fan of Damages. I looked forward to seeing the show every week and missed it when it ended. However, I knew it would be back the next season because it was so good. Who knew something so well done and fascinating would not be renewed. I do not have direct tv and won’t be getting it. Hopefully I will be able to buy the DVD when it comes out.
I’m just happy that the show is saved. A lot of ppl are upset and disappointed but wouldn’t you rather the show be picked up by someone else so it can finish out its course, rather than just ended without any wrap up or real ending? I have DirecTV and watch the 101 channel so its not that big of a deal to me. I know it sucks that its not on FX anymore, but If I didnt have DirecTV, I would still be happy that I have the DVDs to look forward to. After seeing a couple of my… Read more »
I probably won’t have DirecTV when this airs, but still, I’m thrilled the show is alive because it’s truly one of the best on TV right now (and far better then subsequent F/X dramas Sons of Anarchy and Justified in my correct opinion.). I’ll buy the DVDs, download the episodes, I’ll see it somehow. I’m just happy there’s more to see.
I was absolutely glued to my TV when it was on. I even bought the DVD’s when they came out (which I’ve only done for one other series).
How do they know how many people watch a show? I don’t get it!
We don’t have direct TV and will not be getting it, but I actually considered trying to just to see this show.
Please reconsider FX
I agree. It is the one of the best shows. I will not get direct tv so I guess I will not be seeing it again. You lost a great fan!
Please bring Damages BACK to FX or make it accessible to the masses!!! THE SHOW ROCKS!!!
VERY DISAPPOINTED! I was cleaning out my TiVo and thought I’d better check on Damages. I don’t have DirecTV, never wanted DirecTV and will NOT be getting DirecTV for 1 TV show. I don’t want to have a dish hanging on my house. I don’t want to lose signal because of high winds (living in Chicago, that’s almost a constant). While they state they did this because of a declining fan base, this isn’t going to help.
So, goodbye Damages! It was awesome while it lasted. I won’t even be getting the DVDs.
@Kim – What’s not to understand? We live in a country inhabited by people who would rather watch Jerry Springer, Survivor, Dancing with the Stars and Two and a half Men instead of shows that actually make you think. Great shows like Damages have always been cursed to back shelf relegation due to the nature of it’s complexity.
Thank you DirecTV for saving this great show and adding it to one of my favorite channels, the 101!
You got it, Gary.
One of the most powerful nations, and we are watching Jerry Springer, and his kind. It is really sad 🙁
How can this show not get the ratings???
Oscars? Hello??
I do not understand this tv ratings all I know is , Damages is the only series thatt is the most compelling of all out there.
Direct TV??/ Come on !!!
Kim
I love Damages! It’s an awesome show.. I only have cablevision. This really sucks..
I have to tell you my friends and family will be greatly disappointed in not being able to view the “last 2 seasons” we do not have Direct TV, several of us have tried it over the years, however reception is so key to the “cable services” offered and to put it bluntly it is not consistent! Thank goodness for Netflix I guess, never have been a customer of theirs but if that will be the only way oh well! (if and when the new episodes are realeased). So sorry to FX for the short sighted thinking – I guess… Read more »
Thanks Diane- though I know there are thousands of folks who are very upset with FX… you have to look at what other cable companies are doing—I think in the end no one will go to FX if this is what their BOD think is wise.
Obviously not on the ball with this one.
Glenn Close? She bleeds drama- how dare you FX
Brother!
