What happened with Dark Matter? Recently, co-creator Joseph Mallozzi explained why Syfy cancelled the TV show after three seasons.
The sci-fi drama follows the crew of a derelict spaceship who awake with no memory of who they are or how they got on board. Still, they must work together to survive a threatening voyage charged with vengeance, betrayal, and plenty of secrets. The cast includes Marc Bendavid, Melissa O’Neil, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr, Jodelle Ferland, Roger Cross, and Zoie Palmer.
Recently, Mallozzi addressed Dark Matter‘s cancellation on Reddit, saying Syfy‘s LA division did not support the series from the beginning. Read the entire post below:
It irritates me too. Especially because I had a five season plan going in complete with character and story arcs (which is why we were always able to set-up and pay off so much as the show went along). But, since you asked, this is what went down…
When we were first pitching the show, the pilot script went to Syfy’s Acquisition division in New York. They picked up the show. But as it turns out, the script had also been sent to Syfy’s Originals division in L.A. – who hated it and passed. And when they found out that the Acquisitions department in NY had picked up a project they had passed on, I heard they were decidedly Unhappy.
Then the show premiered and outperformed most of their originals. Which, from what I heard, really didn’t sit well with Syfy L.A.
Fast-forward three years later and our point person in New York left to go to Netflix. As a result, we didn’t have a champion in our corner anymore. Even though we were the network’s third-most watched show, I heard that not one executive stepped up for us. And, well, Syfy L.A. were never really fans – so we were cancelled. Without so much as a press release or a thank you. We went back at them and asked for the opportunity to offer fans a conclusion, even simply in the form of a two hour movie. They never even answered the email.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Dark Matter? Would you have watched a fourth season?
This was my favorite Syfy show. I don’t watch anything on that channel anymore. They have no creativity left.
One of my favorite Sci-fi shows of all time…would love a 4th seaaon
Netflix ruins a great thing. Yes we would have continued watching Dark Matter. Well written with extremely likeable characters. And hate the timing with a very good last episode.
I was very excited to see the next season of Dark Matter and felt betrayed by the Syfy channel. It seems utterly ridiculous to bring in a show that OBVIOUSLY has a story arc and then throw it out midstream, especially when the ratings are still very good. It’s petty and dismissive of the fans. I expect this from FOX (I’m never forgetting Firefly), but as a very genre channel Syfy needs to do better.
Why not put allow the public request it be re-instated or let Net Flix pick it up as their series?
I would watch a forth and a fifth season. Just started season one, again. This will be the third time through the sereies. And loving it more this time than before.
Dark Matter was an above average show with a following after only one season. The decision to cancel it wasn’t properly thought out and was likely based on petty rivalry. Once again a good show was cancelled before it’s time; much like “Space: Above and Beyond”, “Firefly “, and “Farscape”. Seems these folks who make the big decisions should come out of that white tower and converse with us “little people”.
I would definitely like a finalization to this Greeat series be it in movie or series format
Loved the show Netflix could have at least let the show have a proper ending , black ships are coming that’s how it ended
SFy has a history of killing it’s series after only 4-5 seasons. Regardless if it a rating success, they kill it. Remember Warehouse 13, Haven,Defiance, Dominion… See a pattern?
I agree, but at least those shows had a semblance of wrap up. Ships arrive and then….. leave us hanging. It’s obnoxious.
my husband and myself were devoted fans. we would love to see it continue and to hell with the powers that be. they are always doing something bad to our favorite shows.
the powers-that-be are doing more than ruining TV shows they’re ruining lives. the Rothschilds and friends have been running the world since so long ago. do your own research it’s not a conspiracy theory it’s just a conspiracy that is a fact. they have been lying and covering so many things in history it has been teaching us lies or half-truths. pass it along the more that you know send the more that can push back against them.and yes Syfy seems to always cancel shows after a certain point hard for me to even try to look at anything not… Read more »
one power liked something and the other one got jealous. the powers-that-be don’t always get along .since they are part of the same business you think that they would be glad if the show’s doing well… shows how petty they can be in Hollywood. guess it’s no loss to them they’re always getting money somehow
Yes, I definatly would have watched a fourth season. Dark Matter was one of SyFy’s best shows it is a shame that they cancelled it
Dark Matter was one of the best shows on SyFy. The characters were great and the acting was outstanding. We definitely miss it
Dark Matter was better than most of the crappy shows and movies on SYFY but it wasn’t the lowest common denominator therefore not profitable. Good or Bad show get cancelled or renewed on how much money the make. Boo.
I would definitely watch a season 4, 5, and more. Dark Matter was great, and I was sorry to see it cancelled.
