As you may recall back in May 2006, Deadwood fans were shocked to learn that the third season of David Milch’s acclaimed western series would be the show’s last. Though the HBO series was not officially cancelled per se, the series’ cast options were not picked up, leaving the actors unemployed and free to pursue other projects. If new Deadwood projects were commissioned at a later time, it was said that it would be unlikely that all of the cast members would be available to participate.
Lots of fans let HBO know how they felt about the situation. A massive letter-writing campaign was organized and a full-page ad was placed in the trade paper Variety. Many said that if the pay-per-view channel cancelled the old west series then they would cancel their monthly subscriptions. HBO heard the outcry and finally came to an agreement with David to create a pair of two-hour films that would allow him to properly wrap up the series (in place of a fourth season). Each episode of Deadwood has typically represented one day in the lives of the South Dakota characters. Shifting to two-hour movies would allow David to break that format and complete the storys he had planned for the final season.
At the time, it was said the movies would be broadcast in 2007. According to SaveDeadwood.net, filming is now scheduled to start in June or July of this year (after the completion of the first season of David’s other HBO series, John from Cincinnati). Unfortunately, the longer it takes for the production to get going, the less likely that all of the cast members will be available. Many of the actors have very active careers outside the Deadwood series.
Actor Ian McShane (Al Swearengen on Deadwood) for example is scheduled to star in a revival of The Homecoming on Broadway in the Fall. His rehearsals would theoretically start in October, leaving a very limited time-frame to participate in the movies.
Though David Milch is reportedly excited about his scripts, Ian seems less than optimistic. “We’re still waiting to know if the two two-hour movies will done,” McShane said. “Today they say yes, they will be done, but who knows what they’ll say tomorrow. I’ve got a feeling in me that it’s not completely dead in some way, but who knows what they could do it?”
Though it seems like we’re closer to seeing the movies be made, they’re far from completed. Will all of the cast members be available? Will the movies fulfill the promise and wrap up the storylines properly? Time will tell so stay tuned!
First you rip us off on “Carnival”-what happened there? Now you’re pulling the plug on “Deadwood”. I will not be investing any more of my time or money on HBO.
Okay guys, the thing with Deadwood was just a bad series of events. For one, HBO allegedly couldn’t afford producing Rome and Deadwood. HBO sunk over $150m into Rome’s Season 2 sets (they were huge). Because of this, the approximate $90m that another season of Deadwood would require was out of reach. They couldn’t scrap the show they already invested $150m into, and David Milch at the time was beginning work on his new show and was unsure if he wanted to continue Deadwood. This led HBO to put Deadwood up on the chop block, with the loose stipulation that… Read more »
Ok, this is getting real old. We watch several HBO series. Our top ones were Deadwood, Rome, Soprano’s & 6ft. Under. 3 of the 4 are over and only 6 Feet Under had a consistant run w/ an ending. The 2 yr waiting period between Soprano’s was ridiculous & pulling Deadwood is even a bigger joke.
HBO should pull that discusting Big Love & give us back Deadwood. I’m very tempted to cancel my subscription.
Dear Deadwood,
Where have you gone? You teased us for 3 great seasons and now nothing? No word on your official homecoming? Nothing told to your legion of fans that miss you and want to hear official word of your revival!!! Perhaps you and your creator Mr Milch could move too another network that would better appreciate you. It is obvious that HBO had no clue!! We miss you and want you back!!
Come home!!
Love your fans!!!
This is a very nice post, and I want to see how others react to this.
Unbelievable! Deadwood was cancelled? I looked forward every week to watching this show. I even watched re-runs. This is the best most accurate history of one of our most amazing times in history that was finally told more realistic than any text book or cleaned up TV prime time version could ever reveal. Bring it back – Keep it going!!
DEADWOOD WAS A GREAT SHOW I FINALLY FOUND A MOVIE I REALLY ENJOYED AND THEN PUFF THEY TAKE IT OFF THE AIR AND REPLACE IT WITH SOMETHING STUPID.
I am utterly upset this season that HBO has decided for some inane reason not to air Deadwood this year. As well as other viewers, I fell in love with that show and looked forward to seeing it every week. I am appalled that HBO would do something like this without any explanations to its viewers. For the amount of money we pay for the service, I feel maybe they should have taken a national poll of their viewers to find out what it is we want. Without us paying customers, there would be no HBO.
I am sick to my stomach, by far my favorite show, now left in the lerch…tell me HBO, why should I ever buy into another one of your series again? You leave me frustrated and pissed with un-announced cancellations and two year hiatus’……give me a break, better yet, maybe I will be here when you get back!
I really didn’t want to believe the show had been cancelled. There was so much left un-said. What do I do now, watch Lifetime movies in hopes of getting a little drama. Why do all the good ones have to go? I swear this may be it for me with HB stinkin O.
It is really a shame that HBO
listens to people who should not even be watching a program such as Deadwood. As it might infringe on one of the so called right to watch Mary Poppins on all HBO channels 24/7. It is just as stupid as when NBC canceled Kingpin after just one season.
We so loved Deadwood and to leave it unfinished is soooo wrong. It tells us you don’t care about the people who faithfully watch your series. Can we trust you anymore? I wonder.
Amazing how one learns to listen while watching.
I still miss Deadwood so much. Please please keep the pressure on them. This was such a good series. Let me know what I can do.
Stay on top of this, please. We were HUGE Deadwood fans. (My son, in fact, was born there). It was television like I’ve never seen…before or since. How many shows can you cite that were written in iambic pantameter? It was like profane Shakespeare. I would LOVE to see these two movies get made.
