Kiefer Sutherland enjoyed a long run on the 24 series on FOX and his new Designated Survivor TV show was one of the most-anticipated of the 2016-17 season. How has this ABC series been doing in the ratings? Is Designated Survivor worth watching? Cancel or keep it?
A political thriller, Designated Survivor follows Tom Kirkman (Sutherland), a lower-level Cabinet member, who ends up becoming the President of the United States. He struggles to keep the country and his own family from falling apart — while navigating the highly-volatile political arena and leading the search to find who is responsible for a horrific attack. The rest of the cast includes Natascha McElhone, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, LaMonica Garrett, Tanner Buchanan, Kal Penn, and Maggie Q.
The series debuted on September 21st with a 2.24 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.04 million viewers. That was a very positive start in the ratings.
In week two, the numbers fell more than 20%, to a 1.79 in the demo and 7.97 million. In week three, they fell more than 10% to a 1.61 demo and 7.05 million. Episode four held steady but episode five’s numbers saw another big fall, dropping to a 1.23 demo rating with 5.96 million. Subsequent episodes have stayed at about the same levels.
While ABC really wants this show to survive, the numbers seem to indicate that the audience is losing interest. The series does get a very healthy boost in delayed viewing but the networks get paid for C+3 ratings. Those numbers include DVR viewing within three days of the original airing — when the commercials are watched. A big part of the reason people use a DVR is to skip commercials so it’s unclear how
Those numbers include DVR viewing within three days of the original airing — when the commercials are watched. After all, a big part of the reason why people use a DVR is to skip commercials so it’s unclear how much delayed viewing is really benefiting the network’s bottom line.
While I’m sure ABC isn’t ready to throw in the towel yet, the network execs were surely hoping for better ratings than this. If the ratings fall lower, Designated Survivor could easily be cancelled.
The series has a dozen more episodes to prove itself but the season won’t resume until March 8th. Will viewers be anxiously waiting for new episodes or, will they have moved on? We’ll have to wait and see.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Designated Survivor TV show on ABC? Is this series worth watching? Cancel or keep it?
Designated Survivor is great. If the ratings models show this show not as successful enough to keep it, the models need to change. While I understand the need to pay for making it, people’s habits and needs change. Put it on eatlier if needed. The twists and turns and suspense is great. I watch it when it airs and again on DVR later. Please KEEP it!
Wife & I just found series and anxiously awaiting season 2. Keep this series, bug mistake to drop. Very exciting, intriguing, and captivating. Better than Columbo which we enjoyed many years ago.
Keep it. Not everyone has time to watch the night of, we just watched last episode before mid season break
Please keep the show. My whole family of five watches.
I like this show a lot, even though I’m older than the 18-49 demographic rated. Maybe they need to use other demographic groups for ratings to get an accurate ratings number on this show. I was also very disappointed to learn that I have to wait until March to see the results of the cliffhanger and the rest of the season. Don’t understand why this was done this way. Please keep this show on for next season as I really like it.
I like this show and find the character engaging and more than typical stereotypes. I think it a mistake to hold off the new section until March 8. It seems like the story was flowing along well and with the long delay a lot of interest will be needlessly lost.
Agree
I hope they keep this show. I really like it.
Love this show!!
Looking forward to the second series of Designated Survivor. Keep it going , it’s easy viewing and story line gets better with each episode. Damn good acting and love this American type of drama.
Please keep IT going. Ned more episodes. I love it
There are very few good TV shows out there, well at least what I consider good anyway. This series puts together, intrigue, drama and enough plots twists that make it a top 5 in my book. Please continue the series. I along with those commenting here, we love it!!
Keep it! It’s GREAT!!
Dear ABC (Disney) TV ********,
Stop cancelling all the shows I like on your channels. Keep making more episodes of Designated Survivor and Girl Meets World. Why do you keep cancelling all the good shows?
BUT MAKE IT WEEKLY, STOP INTERRUPTING IT AND PERHAPS EVEN CONSIDER RELEASING THE WHOLE SERIES AT ONCE AS WITH HOUSE OF CARDS OR GIVING OPTION TO BUY EPISODES SOONER. THE STORYLINES ARE DETAILED AND TWO WEEKLY INTERVALS (IN THE UK) MEAN YOU LOSE TRACK/FORGET WHAT HAPPENED EARLIER
KEEP!!! We love it!
