ABC has unveiled yet another cop series, Detroit 1-8-7. This one stars Michael Imperioli who, as you may recall, co-starred on ABC’s Life on Mars a couple seasons ago. That one was cancelled after 17 episodes. Will his new show last any longer?
Detroit 1-8-7 follows a group of homicide detectives working on the tough streets of Detroit, Michigan. The ABC series stars Imperioli as well as Aisha Hinds, D.J. Cotrona, Erin Cummings, James McDaniel, Jon Michael Hill, Natalie Martinez, and Shaun Majumder.
In its premiere, the series attracted a lackluster 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.342 million total viewers. For the timeslot, it was in third (last) place for the all-important demo and in second place for total viewers (beating Parenthood).

The series premiere lost nearly half of its lead-in audience from Dancing with the Stars. Not good.
On top of that, Detroit 1-8-7 continued to lose viewers as the hour progressed. That’s a pretty good indicator that those viewers won’t be back next week.
Detroit 1-8-7 will likely lose viewers in week two, as most shows do. It won’t have to lose many to be in serious trouble.
But, what do you think? Is Detroit 1-8-7 worth watching? Will you make a point to tune in or should it be cancelled already?

I luv this show especially Fitch. Please give it time to establish and stop the bouncing camera
The camera work makes me feel sick. If they decide to switch to normal camerswork i’ll watch it. NYPD Blues is gone dont try to rekindle it with a jumpy camera.
A show like this will end up getting cancelled cause of the network suits not understanding the value of having a core audience which talks about the show all the time then more viewers begin to watch and like it based on the opinion of the core viewers. Then the show gets picked on cable and become popular .. Keep it ABC, you should have learn from your mistakes with My Wife and Kids which is doing great in syndication. Why one may ask because the tv stations put the damn show on where and when people can watch it… Read more »
other than the demographic makeup of the show…I am likin it. as long as they keep producin in detroit, bringin jobs to the vendors and area. it is a good thing. though considering the waning detroit population, if D187 is successful and runs a 7-10 year span, every detroiter will either end up in the ground or locked up.
Detroit 1-8-7 rocks! Yes they should keep, its the best show out right now!!! Fitch is my favorite too!
Luv,luv the show, altho have to record it as time slot is a little late which may be why some people are turning it off. Luv the acting, As the characters develop, makes me want Tues to hurry up and come so can see what they’ll do next. Would luv to see more of the Med Examiner. Will we get to see her do roller derby? What’s up with Sanchez and Finch?
Keep it! Just watched, and I was surprisingly impressed. Imperioli’s acting keeps getting better. Saw subtleties tonight I hadn’t seen before. He has finally shed his NY dialect and Sopranos “look.” I’m intrigued by his acting and the story line and will keep watching, if it stays on the air. I hope so.
They should definitely keep it. The characters are interesting, the setting actually uses Detroit (and being a native this is pretty refreshing), and the dialogue involves Detroit area topics (e.g. abandoned housing). It would be easy for the writers to choose a plot and dialogue that didn’t relate to Detroit themes and the rest of the country would never know the difference, so it’s pretty cool they chose otherwise. And it’s refreshing to have cop show that’s not overly flashy with clever effects like CSI or makes a police precinct look like they have technology comparable to the Pentagon.
Loved the show and the characters. My favorite show so far this season. I pray it doesn’t get cancelled.
Although its very much an “NYPD Blue” clone – (hand-held camera-work, quick cuts, pounding music) Detroit 1-8-7 definitely works as a police serial drama. There’s enough dark “cop” humor in it to make it realistic, and enough gun-play and good-looking actors to attract the younger folks. So far, the story-lines are Detroit centered and have a believable quality to them, and the acting is spot on. Imperioli’s doing a great job as a troubled, hard-to-read ex-NY cop. Great to see James McDaniel back in the cop saddle. ABC – don’t cut it, give it a chance to build an audience,… Read more »
i didn know detroit had that many white folk in it. i mean really dawgs – keep it real.
I love this new show. I thought it was pretty neat that episode one had a lot of Atlanta in it. Re: Anony Detroiter, I too had a hard time too with the shaky camera. It’s almost like a documentary/home video. So far so good ABC. I like Imperoli’s character. Reminds me of the 90’s show Homicide Life on the streets.
we are already addicted to 187 in my house, my teen daughters watch it after school on wednesdays, – on tuesday nights, they make sure it’s set to record on our dvr before they go to bed. yes, we live near detroit – so it’s extra exciting for us to see the city shown, and portrayed accurately – but even if we didn’t live here, we all agree we would watch it regularly. we need a “cop show” like this on the air. this show has heart, humor, twists, and a cast that you can’t wait to get to know… Read more »
“Shacky – always searching for point of interest – focus adjust” cam should be the illegal. Either that or stop employing camera operators out of rehab.
Loved it! My only suggestion is that they stop the shaky camera technique. Believe it or not, some viewers do actually like to have a few seconds to take in the visuals: setting, background, facial expressions, clothing, scenery, etc. They shaky camera and fake window and door framing actually detract from the show. I think Michael Imperioli is by far the superior cast member, the female lead lacks believability-seems far to young to be so hard and street savvy.
