On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

Give them time to build an audience. How can you expect them to succeed without being seen. Change to a better time slot.
There have been some great police shows on TV in the past, my favorites were Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. Now we have Detoit 187 and it has a great cast, don’t let ANYTHING happen to it! If you have to, put the show on TNT as they did with Southland which is another great show.
Its the only show I look forward to every week…
Please keep Detroit 187 on the air! They are just starting to develop the characters. Shows like this need time to develop. I love it!!!!!!
Great show! It just needs time !
This show is a keeper. It has everything a cop show fan would want. Get rid of some of the other junk on ABC and slot this properly with some plugs from the station. You won’t be sorry!
Do us a favor and stay with this show, Detroit 1-8-7 is a great show. If you want to dump a show get rid of some these reality shows. Try a new time slot, give it chance like you do with other shows. It has a great cast and great stories. 1-8-7 HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!
187 one of the best police show since NYPD Blue. The cast is quirky especially Michael I. Love the interaction between him and his partner. Keep the show on!!!!!!
I agree with everyone that this is a GREAT show. It’s got that NYPD Blue edginess to it. It would be a shame to cancel it. I’m so tired of these networks cancelling shows that are well written and have such an ensemble of talented actors. Why don’t they cancel some of the crappy reality shows!?! Anyway, I hope Detroit 187 stays around!!!!
I am really tired of the networks not giving these great shows a shot in staying on the TY lineup. I give my time to watch this refreshing, great talented actors on the air. It’s nice to not see the women put on 6 inch heels and tight skirts. They have their talent speak for them. Everyone looks and acts professionally as the should. Please find a home for this show and don’t let us down AGAIN.
I love this show ! After you get to know the characters.you really feel like you could know them. And I really think the writers have a great twist to their story lines. Plus my grandson was in their 14th episode as an extra. How could I not love this show after that?
please do not cancel this great show. i love it! i think if abc would promote this show the audience would be there and show up every tuesday to watch!! or maybe we could be lucky and another network will pick it up. keep our fingers crossed that the show will return next season.
First time I’ve ever made an effort to save a show. I think this is the best cop show since Hill Street captivated the TV watching nation. Cancellation would suck!
This is my favorite cop type show since the wire, it gets better every week, I hope it gets renewed for a second season.
I was a huge fan of “Hill Street Blues”. Watched every episode. Detroit 1-8-7 is, what Hill Street Blues was in their time. This show is refreshing with it’s cast, story lines, setting, and ideas. Its like waiting to see what’s around the next corner. Please find a home for this home for this program. If not, I’m sure that USA or TNT will.
