On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

It better be back……Love the locale!!!1
My family really likes Detroit 187. We never miss an episode. Detroit 187 is one of the best written and acted shows on TV. The characters are great! It would be a shame to cancel such a great series that is not just “run of the mill. Please continue with this series. I talk about this series with friends, family, and co-workers every week. It would be a shame to not have this quality show on every week.
I’m with you Karen! My family and I hope that the powers that be see the good in this show and keep it going. My husband and I have not found a show we could agree on as much as this one. Detroit is going to make a comeback and it is shows like this that remind us it is still there, it is still very much relevant and it is a great city.
Detroit 187 is one of the best shows on television. Clearly better than some of the glamour shows like Hawaii five o,csi miami etc. this show must stay.
ABC has enough crap on the air. Detroit 187 has superb acting, writing, story lines and character studies. 187 is what TV should be about! Not the mindless “reality shows” that are all over TV that cater to mindless bozo’s. Keep the damn show on the air and give us quality over garbage. The show is awesome!!!
Detroit 187 is a GREAT show. I hope they give it a chance
I am certainly hoping that ABC will NOT cancel Detroit 187. This is only 1 of about 3 regular network tv shows that we watch in our house. Stop pre-empting this series with other programming, give it a decent time slot and give it some time to catch on. I would hate to see this drama go without a chance. Good television dramas are very few and far between. Another network should jump on this if ABC is so foolish as to give it up.
As anyone who watched the episode today (Sunday, March 20), Detroit 187 is a terrific show, with a great ensemble cast. The last episodes put in backstories for the main characters, something important to selling the show. I hope they will bring it back for at least one more year and see.
I really enjoy this show. We hope is isn’t cancelled, we find that the shows we like get cancelled. We give is and “A”
I really hope this show makes it. Being a former Detroiter, I love seeing the city locations during the shows. That aside I think it’s one of the best cop shows in a long time. Hard to believe people would rather watch celebrities dancing than a good drama but what do I know?

I agree with Karen’s previous comments. Detroit 187 is a winner. Maybe it is in the wrong time slot. I just watched the show aired on Sunday March 20, 2011. Everyone here thought it was exceptionally written and portrayed by the actors. The stories are very realistic and hold your attention. I am a retired law enforcement officer. I find the roles as police officers are very well performed. You have a real winner here, so please don’t mess it up by cancelling this show!!!
This show is great in my book! It could very well be the perfect replacemenr for “24”
My husband and I will be sad if you take it off the air. We loved the whole truth too. ABC doesn’t give people enough time for people to turn others on to a good show. ABC keeps just dropping shows in the middle of year. I loved The Whole Truth and I love Detroit 1-8-7. If ABC doesn’t bring it back I will stop watching all ABC Shows. It isn’t worth it to get to love a show and you people aren’t happy and don’t give it a chance.
this is one of the better shows on tv……….find a better time slot and keep it going………. PLEAZE
I certainly hope the powers that be will realize they have a winner in Detroit 187. Those of us who remember NYPD Blue and the original Hill Street Blues are rooting for the retention of this police show. I really get frosted (pardon the pun) when I read that the studio’s are only interested in what the “younger” demographics are watching. Got news for you folks….there are plenty of us “older” viewers who buy the merchandise advertised and whose opinions, likes, and desires need to be considered. Maybe the plots, etc. are too complicated for the “younger” minds to follow???… Read more »
I hate those teenbopper shows, enough already with the cutsie dumb shows. Good dramas with good plots, good acting and good acters are fewer and fewer……. !!
