On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

My wife and I love Detroit 187. It will truly be a shame if it cancelled. Without a doubt, it is the best new show on television for this year. I realize the ratings are based on ages 19 to 49, but they might take a look at the 50 and older generation (they spend money too). The story line is great and so is the cast. I just hope if ABC doesn’t keep it, maybe someone like TNT, USA, FX, etc will pick it up.
My husband & I love the show. We hope it doesn’t cancel. The music in the background is TOO LOUD most of the time & I’m sure some folks with hearing issues may have just been too frustrated by not being able to hear the dialog for the music being too loud. ABC, please bring it back & adjust the background music to be soft & IN THE BACKGROUND!
Again; Network TV dumps yet another show that they did a shabby job promoting and inconsistent airing. Extremely talented cast the writing is a bit melodramtic but compared to Greys Anatomy, Law & Order, its at apr or above…. Give it a chance and not only will it pay didvidends later but it actually does Detroit well, it shows that a city can come back rebound and excel when the the fabric that holds it together is strong. The shows mirrors Detroit and sometimes its about waiting out the viewers “AIR IT and THEY WILL COME”. Please don’t subject us… Read more »
This is my favorite show on tv!! I really live the cast, the script, everything about it! I really hope it isn’t over.
Love it, love it, love it. I work in a large real estate office in San Jose and EVERYONE in the office know that it is one of the best shows on TV. Keeps the excitment going and the acting is great. Please don’t take it off. Cross my heart…it would be a big mistake. To prove my point, watch CSI Miami…the same actors proocess the evidence, arrest the criminal, negoiate hostage situations, participate in high speed pursuits, have shoot outs with the bad guys. Give me a break. You guys are entertaining – keep it going.
Some truly excellent shows have taken time to really jell, and then have gone on to become some of the best ever on TV. Detroit 187 has been developing as the season has unfolded. It comes across as gritty, and real with a good contrast in characters. It also shows us how people can interact in a post-racial society. For the network to give up on this show, would be to give it to another network (much the same way as “Southland” another truly great police drama) which, in the long run, will prove that they, the network took the… Read more »
Bring it back, my husband and I love the show@
!
I think that Detroit 187 should be renewed. With better advertising, this would be a hit show. The actors are believable and the writing far above average than shows like the Event and Brothers and Sisters.
Detroit 1-8-7 is the best show as it was proven in the finale. The way it is filmed shows that you can do great TV work. Need another chance and season 2
I WELL NOT WATCH ANY THING ON ABC, BUT DETRIOT 187 IS A GREAT SHOW, AND THE CAST AND STORY LINE IS GREAT.
I love Detroit 1-8-7 and will be very disappointed if ABC cancels it. The characters are well developed and the acting is superb. Perhaps it is too sophisticated for network tv – it feels like a typical, well done, HBO series. I hope ABC recognizes that it has a quality television show and brings it back in September.
Detriot 187 is great show with excellent cast. Needs consistent time slot.
Detroit 1-8-7 is one of the the best shows on television. I don’t know if there is a way to track when the show is recorded on DVR or when it is viewed on line at ABC.com or Hulu, but I would think the ratings would skyrocket. I’m one who is unable to watch it on television, so I catch the episodes online every week. ABC, this show is a keeper that has not run its course yet!
Give it another chance! It’s one of the smartest shows on ABC.
Its alos one of the few shows that I actually enjpy. Great cast and very realistic, They keep shows like the Bachelor onWHy I’ll never know but a good storyline true to life drama with Great actors to get cancelled go figure!
