Dexter: New Blood wrapped on Showtime on Sunday, and the finale has some viewers wondering if the series could continue with a new chapter – perhaps following Dexter Morgan’s son Harrison, played by Jack Alcott.
[SPOILER ALERT]
The season finale of Dexter: New Blood features the death of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) at the hands of his son. However, it’s possible that this might not be the end of the series. Harrison could follow in his father’s footsteps, allowing the story to continue.
Executive producer Clyde Phillips said the following about the possible future of the Showtime series, per Deadline:
“As I mentioned, this show is a huge asset. When people start bingeing this after the finale, I’m confident the numbers will continue to go up. It’s up to Showtime to make the call to me if they want more. If they ask me if I’d like to make a continuation of this, I would say yes. I have a lot of things going on but I would drop everything for this and say yes in one second.
Harrison is such a complicated character and he has within him the seeds of the dark passenger. He’s capable. Look at that takedown of Dexter in the end, what’s in Harrison is that he has to kill this man.
Also, Harrison brings a different perspective to the vigilantism of it all than Dexter did, which was kind of surprising to Dexter. He brings this youthful, optimistic innocence, that he and his dad are basically Batman and Robin. Think of every time we take out one of these bad guys how many lives we’re saving, that this bad person is not going to kill. Dexter never thought of that. Dexter was only taking out bad guys because that was his code.
As for the decision to kill Dexter in the finale, Phillips said that it was the plan all along. He noted:
“We knew this had to happen, and I think it had to happen for the audience as much as for the character. To see him get caught time and time again and get out of it at a time and time again is a disservice to the audience. And I think there’s a certain truth in this storytelling, in authenticity in the storytelling.”
Having worked on the Dexter series for its first four seasons, Phillips felt that New Blood was a suitable way to end Dexter Morgan’s story — particularly after what many felt was an unsatisfying ending of the original show.
“How often does a show get to do a second finale? I think the answer is never. With the bad taste that the original finale left in everybody’s mouth, we had this rare opportunity to redeem the show and to give the audience the respect it deserves, the authenticity it deserves, and the gratitude for sticking with us.”
What do you think? Do you want to see a second season of Dexter: New Blood on Showtime?
Yes awesome show.. loved how Deb got involved in the next blood.. maybe a real MOVIE is in order with Harrison to start the new journey .. then a series after how Harrison passion for helping the victims of murder.. so let the story begin with Harrison’s new/career with what ever the producers can come up with.. I would suggest a MD.. in what .. many different fields .. maybe a anesthesiologist.. lol
Of course I would like the Dexter series to continue with his sons dark passenger. Have to say the movie had a good ending for Dexter and perhaps a new beginning for his son. I guess we will see if there will be a continuation.
Not only do I think there should not be another season, but I feel after watching “New Blood” that it should never have occurred. First of all Dexter, himself, did feel that he was saving other innocent people all along. To think that his son originated this intent is BS. Also, I do not feel his son would have shot him in cold blood. Having him go through the system and be alive, whether or not there was to be an additional season, would have been a better ending. In all, I am very disappointed in the entire idea of… Read more »
Good Ending. Hope it picks up with the son..
