A comedy based on the Animal Media Group web series, the Downward Dog TV show centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges).
Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The comedy explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
Nan is trying to negotiate a trying job, as well as her unfair, narcissistic boss, Kevin (Rothbart), while dealing with turmoil in her private life. Sometimes, the tumult distracts her from what Martin considers her priorities.
When he can’t have Nan’s undivided attention, Martin feels isolated and neglected and, as a result, acts out. Consequently, the two attend obedience school, which gives them a fresh perspective on the importance of their relationship.
Meanwhile, Nan is trying establish boundaries with her her ex-boyfriend Jason (Neff), while still retaining him as Martin’s dog walker. Rounding out Nan’s circle is her human best friend and co-worker, Jenn (Howell-Baptiste).

What do you think? Do you like the Downward Dog TV show? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
This was the first time I ran home to watch a show. I also told co-workers and friends to watch. I put it on Face Book (which I really don’t use much) that I was watching Downward Dog tonight. In the world of Reality TV, it is so great to find a well written creative comedy that helps you to think and develop feelings of all kinds. My brother said he cried as did I. It’s not about a dog and his owner. It’s about much more than that. Seeing things through the dog “Martin’s” brain (great writing). It is… Read more »
And how it coincides with what’s going on in Nan’s life. Great characters aside from Martin as well.
I loved DD. Made me a better dog owner. Please renew!
Almost didn’t watch because of the title–thought it would be a yoga show of some sort, but fell in love with it after one episode. Hope some network like Hulu or Netflix will pick it up. I’m a cat and dog person so I wasn’t crazy about the cat being so evil but some cats really are especially around dogs. It has a sweet, tenderness about it and there really are more stories to tell.
ABC made a BIG GIGANTIC MISTAKE Cancelling DOWNWARD DOG. ABC’S Problem is they just kept changing the times the show aired. I think it only Aired 2 or 3 times at its regular scheduled time slot , That ‘s out of 8 episodes. The last 2 I missed because they aired 2 hours late to make room for that crappy Bachelor which sucks. Come on ABC how do you expect a show to succeed with Schizophrenic air times. ABC You should GROW-UP really and rethink your decision. Give more people a chance to see the show( IT IS A UNIQUE… Read more »
I wanted to love the show but the dog’s overuse of “like” drove me crazy after one episode. I like thought that was like a trend that was like over. I’m certain that my cat speaks with perfect grammar; I think this show would have done better if the dog passed 2nd grade English. 😉
Obviously, you just didn’t get the show, It’s truly brilliant! He’s like, a DOG you know…
I was shocked that the show was canceled. My daughter and I and our dog would watch it every Tuesday. It was different but refreshing than the other shows. Looked forward to watching it every Tuesday and now nothing to look forward to on Tuesday nights. Very disappointed. Hope and pray that another network takes it. Also don’t want Ned a.k.a. Martin to be out of a job.
I don’t watch much TV because programming is terrible, but I really enjoyed this show and made an effort to actually watch it as did others I spoke with. Originality, creativity, doesn’t exist anymore, and as usual, ABC will continue repackaging and rolling out the same garbage. Hopefully, another network or streaming service will bring it back.
LOVED THIS SERIES!!!! loved Martin the dog – what a face and those eyes – loved the cast especially Martin’s owner Nan and her boyfriend as well as Nan’s work friend – why do they keep stupid sitcoms going on and on and yet they finally get a “feel good” comedy and they axe it – sick of watching murder, blood, guts and gore on TV – need more upbeat clever shows like Downward Dog – please bring it back – and Martin
ABC finally shows some originality in their comedy programming and now take it away? I love this show. Dumb, dumb decision, ABC.
It’s been a very long time since I enjoyed a network TV show to such a great degree. ABC truly made a bad decision with the cancellation of this creative well cast show. Major disappointment.
Please ABC don’t give up on downward dog
Please ABC don’t get rid of this show it’s so adorable, sick of reality tv
Please bring back Downward Dog. Great show !!
I’m very disappointed this show was about a dog. MAN’S BEST FRIEND!! 2 my knowledge they’re r no other programs on current US TV about DOGS!! I thought that this was a very Cute and well thought of program! I liked the thinking of MARTIN between Woody ALLEN and CHRISTOPHER WALKIN!! ABC NEEDS 2 BRING IT BACK ALONG WITH LAST MAN STANDING!! 2 SHOWS THAT THEY REALLY SHOULDN’T HAVE AXED!! JW²
I really looked forward to seeing the show. All dog owners, once you see the show, you will never look the same at your dog. You will always wonder what they are thinking. Very disappointed in ABC, when other shows are boring. Are certainly hope another network picks it up, come on Pittsburgh show your support along with all the dog owners.
