A comedy based on the Animal Media Group web series, the Downward Dog TV show centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges).
Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The comedy explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
Nan is trying to negotiate a trying job, as well as her unfair, narcissistic boss, Kevin (Rothbart), while dealing with turmoil in her private life. Sometimes, the tumult distracts her from what Martin considers her priorities.
When he can’t have Nan’s undivided attention, Martin feels isolated and neglected and, as a result, acts out. Consequently, the two attend obedience school, which gives them a fresh perspective on the importance of their relationship.
Meanwhile, Nan is trying establish boundaries with her her ex-boyfriend Jason (Neff), while still retaining him as Martin’s dog walker. Rounding out Nan’s circle is her human best friend and co-worker, Jenn (Howell-Baptiste).

What do you think? Do you like the Downward Dog TV show? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Loved this show. It was so clever. Please give it a chance to get a following. Eight episodes over the summer isn’t a fair trial. I know people who didn’t like the first episode but I got them to continue watching and they lived it.
Best show to air this season and now it is gone! Fingers crossed it picked up by Netflix or Amazon!!!!!
Love this adorable show!! I even bought the first season from Amazon! At last, TV worth watching!! I find both humor and insight in Martin’s dialogue… very well written, and wish it would be renewed for another season. Perhaps if it had been advertised more,… more people would have been able to have a taste of its content… Please bring this show back; it’s a television show worth watching!!
WHAT A GREAT SHOW! It is very laid back, funny, and entertaining. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE NETWORKS? Are they going to drive ALL OF US away to AMAZON AND NETFLIX?
I’m not finished. This show isn’t silly at all. To some people, perhaps. It’s very well written. I hope someone hears how disappointed many of us are.
What a sad shame…this is one of the most creative, positive thinking, extremely hilarious shows that I’ve seen in a longtime! I’m thinking of starting a petition to keep it on the air, we need more smart comedies to combat the insanity out there!
Please give it a chance. I really enjoyed it. I’m watching a rerun now. However, I would love to see Martin “smile” more. I love his vocabulary. There’s so much killing and hate on TV. It might seem silly, but we need silly more. It really is a cute show. It’s actually heartwarming, too, Nan and her personal relationship and her job. Also, we animal lovers always wonder what our furry babies are thinking.
YOU ARE CORRECT. There is WAY TOO MUCH killing, reality shows, and slop on TV. This show was a breath of fresh air!!
PUHLEEEZE bring Martin back!! I can’t believe this AMAZING show was cancelled. As a dog lover and dogsitter I can attest to the fact that SO MANY dogs I know think exactly like Martin..and Nan is the perfect example of a great dog Mommy. I am so sad we won’t get to know Martin, Nan and the rest of the cast better. So sad that it may have been cancelled due to non dog lovers?? Possibly the fact that Downward Dog is so fresh and new..way out of the box. I so hope the poor decision to cancel it can… Read more »
What a loss. We enjoyed Downward Dog very much. Very sad that this show is being cancelled. Hopefully another network will take a chance on something different. Thanks to all involved for bringing a great show with a canine perspective.
This show needs to be renewed or picked up by another station. Sweet, funny and family friendly.
HALLMARK, AMAZON, AND/OR NETFLIX should pick them up. GREAT SHOW! Good acting, too.
Best show I’ve seen in a long time—can’t believe it’s cancelled.
ABC ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING??? Why cancel a unique, funny and wonderfully written show? There are so many crime shows, medical shows and survival shows on TV…enough already. Finally we had a wonderfully quirky and sweet show that was Downward Dog. I am so disappointed. My dog also loved this show. People making these decisions don’t know their audience. You chose wrong ABC!
Myself and four of my friends are very upset that this show was cancelled. Wonderful and very unique storyline with a great cast that any dog lover should treasure. The laughs are never ending and truly a connection felt with each episode.
I can’t believe this show is being cancelled. Best show I have watched in a long time. I suppose there will be another reality show to take its place. I guess I will have to watch M*A*S*H reruns until some network picks this show up. We love you Martin/Ned!
This is a great show! I only watch two “family shows”, Modern Family and Downward Dog. Nothing else is worth my time. This show deserves to be renewed!!!!! The rest of television’s 30 min family shows are garbage compared to Downward Dog. It is the best show I have seen in a long time! KEEP IT ON TELEVISION!
Three of us here at my apt bldg. watched Downward Dog together every week Love that Martin!! WE LIKE IT!!!! KEEP IT!!!! PLEASE
