The ratings for Elementary fell quite a bit last year but CBS still renewed it. Is it essentially guaranteed to be renewed for a fourth season because that will give the series enough episodes for a syndication package? If the ratings drop low enough, could it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned.
A contemporary update on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle characters, Elementary follows eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Doctor Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) as they help solve crimes in New York. Aidan Quinn and Jon Michael Hill co-star.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/11 update: CBS has renewed Elementary for a fourth season.
Final season averages: 1.28 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.42 million total viewers.

For comparisons: The second season of Elementary averaged a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.79 million total viewers.
Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like the Elementary TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or be renewed for a fourth season?
I was not sure I liked the new dynamics of the show. But by bringing in the new protégé and Watson moving out, it puts a nip in Watson and Holmes being a romantic couple and all that angst. I was rooting for it last season, but now see that it will be good to have a show that has a different back story than the male/female romantic relationship.
I really love the different style and approach for a modern Sherlock. I find this to be very different than anything else on any station and refreshing but I do think having the show start later than all the others in the season resulted in and hides the fact that it’s on and people don’t know it is running. Seems to me the network placement call is to blame for the low ratings because the competition is already been given a big head start. Duh.
The idiot writers made a fatal mistake binging in the new girl. They should have continued developing the relationship between Holmes & Watson. I still like the show but, no doubt, this will be the last season.
wow, this dead horse just keeps getting beat. this show will be moved somewhere else mid season like Sat 3 AM
Guess this wasn’t a must see for me. I still haven’t watched this season and haven’t missed it.
Love the show. Just wish Johnny Lee Miller would speak a little more clearly.
Hey Admn….Yesterday, I wrote a nice thoughtful analysis and you censored it. Why????????
It wasn’t censored. It’s right here: http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/elementary-season-three-ratings-34551/comment-page-1/#comment-1870496
I have no problem with Elementary not being precisely what one would expect of Sherlock from the traditional writings. This one has won me full heartedly. I think the acting is very good . When I saw the trailers for this season, I realized I was smiling each time I saw them.. I hope they do well.
I see this show as a clone of the Mentalist, not a variation of Conan Doyle stories like BBC Sherlock is. Rather than the Jane guy coming in to spot the obvious but overlooked clue, you have Holmes come in to spot the obvious overlooked clue. Both are irritable towards and unliked by others, but are “put up with” cause they can solve a crime now and then. Both have personal demons. Both shows tried a major longer story arc (Red John and Mycroft/MI6) that viewers hated. Mentalist switched from CA Sate Police to TX FBI for a major plot… Read more »
this show needs one or two more for its syndication deal that is already in place. but it will move to Fri or Sun nite next year. Too low rated for Mon thru Thurs
i was lame, hope it get better….
reworked story line and new characters are a flop
it was not so good…..
I’m a Sherlock Holmes fan both in books and movies. I liked Basil Rothbone and Benedict Comberbacht’s versions the best of all the Sherlocks. There’s been a few others who did one movie that were ok also. But this version is basically so removed from the actual Sherlock Holmes personna that it shouldn’t be allowed to pretend it’s a Holmes story in any manner. Doyle’s estate should insist as far as I’m concerned. I don’t mind Lucy, but that actor is just light years apart from anything like Holmes that I tapped out after the first episode. I’m really surprised… Read more »
Well, I couldn’t disagree more. First, I think the updated Holmes and Watson are spot on. I have to agree with the first few episodes of the first season might have taken some getting used to but as I began to see the characterizations begin to develop I was hooked! I believe that Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu have totally assumed their characters in the true spirit of Holmes and Watson and their storylines are filled with intrigue and totally believable in content. Excellent writing and situations, I have come to appreciate that they don’t just run around looking… Read more »
and this is why we have 200 channels, because I disagree with everything you said. I gave up on this in season one. Tuned in to see if the new season was any better, not in my book. To me it is don’t see tv. I agree with tundrabeast, Rathbone and Cumberbacht. Jeremy Brett is third
I grew up watching Basil Rathbone as Sherlock. He was fantastic and I never would have believed another actor could assume the mantle. However, Jeremy Brett WAS the personification of Doyle’s Sherlock. He captured every mannerism in full. I enjoy Cumberpatch. He is an excellent actor & will be..if not already…a major star. His interpretation of Sherlock is enjoyable but, he’s not Doyle’s Sherlock. Now…as to Elementary…I like Miller & Liu. Obviously it only bears a passing resemblance to the classic Sherlock but, once you get past being a purist…it has generally been an entertaining show. Hope it goes 4… Read more »
WOW!!!!!!! What an intriguing start for the new season. I can’t wait for next episode!
In my opinion “How To Get Away With Murder” might suffer some with Sherlock and Watson back. This is in my top must sees every week!!!
I doubt that based on the ratings
I didn’t even realize the show was back. I assumed CBS was still showing football. Anyway I haven’t really missed watching the show this season.
The theme of this show is so much fun to follow — we love it. Please keep it on the air. We love the characters too. Well acted.
