Last year, The Expanse TV show was the highest-rated show on Syfy. Will it continue to be a top draw for the cable channel? Will the ratings rise or fall? Will The Expanse be cancelled or renewed for a third season? Stay tuned.
The Expanse is based on the James S. A. Corey book series. It’s set centuries into the future where Earth’s population has ballooned to over 30 billion and humans have colonized the solar system. Police detective Miller (Thomas Jane) and his crew must unravel a conspiracy that threatens peace and the survival of humanity. The rest of the Syfy cast includes Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, Chad L. Coleman, and Shawn Doyle.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

For comparisons: The first season of The Expanse on Syfy averaged a 0.22 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 703,000 total viewers (live + same day).
What do you think? Do you like The Expanse TV series on Syfy? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
3/16/17 update: Syfy has renewed The Expanse for a third season. Details here.
2/23/18 update: Season three launches on April 11, 2018. Details here.
It’s a great show and it’s plot and scale is amazing. People that require instant gratification every 20 seconds go watch a show with a laugh track. I’m sure that SYFY is giving it a chance because they remember the error they made with Firefly. A show that gets cancelled bc real time ratings don’t show the accuracy of the following is not a mistake they want to make again. It’s nice to see producers and show runners get more time to develop a story rather than see it get chopped bc they didn’t get real time viewership in 18/34… Read more »
Am I allowed to think it’s poorly cast and acted, and that the political story in the background isn’t told very well? Or am I a mindless sheep who should be watching Barney and Friends for disliking it for reasons other than “instant gratification”?
You may think as you wish. I agree that some of the acting is a bit off, but on the grand scale, the show is beautiful and the stories you complain about are being slowly unpacked in the background, which I really enjoy!
I just discovered this show on Amazon prime a couple months ago and have watched both seasons. Loved it. Hope it continues.
The last episode did a 0.18, so once again SYFY has renewed a show with ratings under a 0.20 and with worse overall ratings than last season. Spending more money on the show didn’t help the ratings. There will probably be a season four because the ratings next season will finish above a 0.10(but will be worse than season 2).
You must have been fired from syfy cause you a bitter ol’ person! Why do do constantly hate on them so much, yet you seem to stick around and watch show just to complain?
The TRUTH isn’t hate. It’s the truth. The show lost 20% of its audience from last season. The ratings dropped from last season too. Show me a show from 5 years ago with ratings this awful that was renewed. Shows like this get renewed because there isn’t anyone to say NO you can’t do that at NBC Universal. How nice that you don’t think that ratings matter. I do. I’ve never worked for SYFY, but based on what has been going on there the last 2 seasons, I probably could. How tough is it to renew a show with pathetic… Read more »
look its less then .20! um………..and on? will ok there are SOME watch it. But the rate shows that the following isnt as many as said.If this keeps up its might be on but if it drops no network people will deal with these types of dem and ratings…..and still have their position.
Maybe SyFy is going for something you’re not aware of, like building a brand. Maybe, though the show has low ratings, they realize the show has quality they want to be associated with and unlike the big networks, they are willing to take the risk on the low ratings to be associated with quality rather than just numbers.
The Expanse is a great show. Why would you want it cancelled?
I just read Entertainment Weekly and The Magicians gets an actual write up for the Wednesday TV block this week ballyhooing its season finale. The Expanse got squat. My diagnosis for TE’s drop in rating: a. Season 1 was better. b. Despite the big budget Alcon fails on marketing TE c. Whoever said the time gap btwn. season is too long, is spot on. d. Losing Thomas Jane/Miller directly correlates to the rating drop e. Myriad other issues related to expanded character roles & reception by the sci fi base Well, we get another season. Maybe they can turn it… Read more »
The last episode this season did a 0.18 The show was renewed for season three and will probably get a season four because the live average ratings for next season will most likely be above a 0.10 I see SYFY doing what they did with 12 Monkeys to The Expanse to give it a fourth season. There’s nobody at NBC Universal willing to fire any if these people running SYFY for making ridiculous decisions.
I paid $25 to buy Season 2 on Amazon. I’m sure a lot of people did. We are probably not included in the ratings numbers, but we put $ in SyFy’s pocket.
I wonder how that works because I watch The Expanse on Amazon too.
I know several people who watch it on DvD .
Not sure who that counts?
The rating with one episode left is really 0.176, and I rounded that up. Fortunately, Failure is okay at SYFY, and the show has been renewed for a season 3. It will probably also get a season 4, because I can’t see the season 3 ratings going below a 0.10
It’s going to get canceled… they are taking this down the path of Babylon 5 and the ratings show why this has been done before. 1st season was a wondrous epic in space, full of culture, quality cgi and a great plot. The second season started off good and then it deteriorates into a slow, campy mess with tight scenes, limited extras, no culture and gratuitous military style ops that downplay the storyline instead of adding to it. Oooh grenade…lets not show the explosion but just the aftermath…lol. Hey, how about 10 minutes of Alex talking to the computer? A… Read more »
The show was RENEWED and if the ratings can get around a 0.22 for the last 2 episodes, the show could finish with live average ratings of a 0.20, which would be worse than last season but not by much. Another show on SYFY that will probably have worse ratings in season 2 than season one, but nobody gets fired, so things just continue.
what are you all crying about. only the first eppy had 1 mil vievers. the rest of season 1 and even 2 now alwais did around 0.700 to 0.400 mil viewers. they cancelling shait . we get third season. maybe finishes there since at the rate the story is going it could easily end on season 3 i would be happy
Found this on Amazon Prime and streamed the first season in less than a week. Can’t wait to stream season 2. I found the pace right and appreciate the view of how the worlds may diverge over time. This is likely a more realistic look of our future than Star Trek.
Look at those ratings 😀 That is beautiful.
The Ratings are in the toilet again for the 2nd week in a row. Renewing this may not have been a good idea. Let’s see how the next four weeks go.
Ratings are terrible. No wonder, it’s just a war series that happens to take place in space. Slow pacing, wonky acting etc.
The problem for this show is that it is on a channel that people gave up on a long time ago. I agree it would do much better on Netflix in the US. They didn’t even get that right, though – opting instead to put it on Amazon Prime. I have Prime – but it’s my fallback – not my go to (like Netflix) when I want to watch something.
There’s a lot more problems than what channel it showing on. If they decided to make this show watchable to the majority of the viewers then maybe just maybe in the ratings better.
It’s watchable for a majority of patient viewers that don’t need hand-holding, instant-explanations and don’t suffer from constant attention deficit.
Of course, it’s for a SF-friendly viewership, ideally those not too stupid to bash the show about stuff they think was filmed wrong while it actually was done scientifically right almost for the first time.
There you assuming that it is for major viewing audience. In fact if was rating much higher. Hence there’s many things that are fundamentally wrong with that show. If the corrected him the radiance would go much higher and stay there. But instead at flounders like a fish that’s been dead for three days.
People tend to be basis if if they supporting a sinking ship….0.11 rating omg at this rate there will be no next season.
Renewed for Season 3!
With WORSE ratings than last season. What a shock! Thank goodness SYFY canned Afterlife and Incorporated so this can be the first show that they renew with worse ratings than last season. Will it be the first show they renew this season with ratings below a 0.20? We’ll find out. The 12 Monkeys renewal was off the board. They didn’t want to renew it after it did WORSE than a 0.10 after season 3 ended, so they just went and did it beforehand.
Maybe it’s more about giving a chance to a high production value show Syfy’ actually not footing most of the bill for, instead of more cheap SF ones like we’ve been putting up with since BSG.
Why more people don’t watch is beyond me. The community is active, I’m pretty sure a LOT more people watch it than what the ratings show, just not on Syfy.
Believe me, SYFY is footing part of the bill for this show. Don’t even think otherwise. The Budget for this show is WAY WAY UP from last season.
I dont know if you noticed but every show on SYFY has declining ratings, except for The Magicians
Did I Notice? Yes I did! I’ve noticed it for a lot longer than most people. SYFY renewed 6 shows with ratings below a 0.20 last season. The ratings for the new season of practically all those shows will drop this season. They went and renewed 12 Monkeys for a season 4 before showing season 3 because they new if they showed season 3 week to week, the live average ratings would be under a 0.10, and they would look stupid renewing it. Expanse will be their first sub 0.20 renewal this season, the first of many. Failure is acceptable… Read more »
The Expanse is one of my favorite programs. I would truly hate to lose it.
