Last summer, CBS found ratings success with new series Under the Dome. This summer, they introduced Extant, a sci-fi series starring Halle Berry. Has it been a hit as well? Will the series be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
On Extant, astronaut Molly Woods (Berry) returns to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. Others in the cast include Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Hiroyuki Sanada, Camryn Manheim, Grace Gummer, and Michael O’Neill.
Debuting on July 9th, the series got off to a decent start and attracted a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.58 million viewers. In week two, the ratings saw a moderate decline which is not unexpected for a new series. Unfortunately, the numbers took a big dip in week three.

The ratings seem to have now leveled off and the show consistently draws a 1.0 rating in the demo with under six million viewers. Those are hardly impressive numbers for an expensive show with a movie star as the lead.
Last year’s Under the Dome was profitable for CBS even before the series aired, thanks to a deal with Amazon and others. CBS has a streaming deal with Amazon for Extant but it’s unclear if that will be enough to get this particular show a second season renewal.
Series creator Mickey Fisher says that he has big plans for season two but has assured fans of a satisfying finale if the show is cancelled. He believes the series has a 50/50 chance.

Pls give us more… fantastic show… interesting and certainly something new and different … completely Over reality TV and law shows.. someone has been brave enough to go and write something different Having Halley. …just genius. ..only three shows we really enjoy and look forward to.. This is the number one… bring on the new season!!!!
I would welcome another season. I like almost anything Halle Berry does, but — please pick up the pace !

I wait with eager anticipation at the news that CBS has pulled the plug on this show. Like a **** in the pool its been floating at the top and smelling worse every episode as it got older. The ratings were awful for it, if they canned Robin Williams show which had more viewers for the demographics, then this show is as dead as Ethan at the very end. Please don’t keep us in suspense and put this nag out of its misery and those who have their hopes pinned on this stinker can find something much better to watch… Read more »
PLEASE renew! The actors’ chemistry is palpable and the storyline is very well written. I watched the entire first season on Amazon Instant Video so please don’t rely on tv viewing numbers alone in your determination of a second season. I was on the edge of my seat for pretty much every episode and by the season finale I was crying and laughing all at the same time. This is a very well written show and I think it just needs a little more time to get its momentum going. RENEW, RENEW, RENEW!!

I loved the show extant, I would certainly like it to continue next year. The only draw back was it being on at 10 oclock, I get up very early so I usually would fall asleep before it came on. I then would watch it on my laptop the following day.. Please bring this show back. We need to see Ethan back, he is such a cutie.
