The future of Flashpoint on CBS is still up in the air but Canadian viewers definitely have more episodes of the cop drama in their future.
Flashpoint is produced in Canada and CBS has licensed episodes since 2008 and used the show mostly as an off-season utility player. Last summer, CBS aired most of the episodes from season three but still had six installments left on the shelf. In January, the decision was made to license seven more episodes, combine them with the leftover six and run them as season four. They began airing in early May.
That left 11 episodes of the cop drama that weren’t being licensed by CBS. They are on track to be aired in Canada this summer.
CTV has now ordered a fifth season of 18 episodes. Flashpoint is the most-watched Canadian drama and has averaged more than 1.5 million viewers (an impressive number by Canadian TV standards). The new order will bring the series’ episode total to 80 installments, making it the longest-running original scripted series currently on Canadian television.
There’s been no word on whether CBS will license any more episodes or not but the ratings certainly haven’t been impressive. Thus far this season, Flashpoint’s been averaging just a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.42 million total viewers. Per the early numbers, last night’s installment tied a repeat of Shark Tank in the demo.
On the other hand, the show doesn’t cost the network as much as producing their own scripted dramas.
Once the new episodes are filmed and completed, there will be 29 episodes that CBS hasn’t licensed. We’ll have to wait to see when or if American audiences will get a chance to see them.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear Flashpoint has been renewed? Should CBS license more episodes?

Flashpoint is one of our favorite shows on television, not CBS, not Friday nights, and not just as a summer replacement. One of our favorites, period.
It’s well scripted, well-acted, and contains current storylines. As said before, it has rhythm, action, tension, humanity, and humor. Although shown on Fridays, we make sure to DVR it if we’re not going to be home.
CBS will be losing quality programming if they make the stupid decision not to license the U.S.-unseen episodes. Come on CBS, listen to the public and continue on with Flashpoint.
I LOVE LOVE this show. I hate it when the summer is over and it is no longer on the air. YES! YES! YES! CBS should renew his series. It is a very well made series and the cast is really, really great. I would love to see it as a regular series not just a summer replacement. I don’t think TV ratings should be considered as this is run in the summer and a lot of people are vacationing, etc. PLEASE, give it a renewal.
I love this show!!! For me it ranks right up there with Criminal Minds and NCIS and CBS should bring it back.
My husband and I love this show, started watching it on netflixs since we dont have cable. But we are almost caught up with the show. Please CBS sign up with flashpoint for another season. Its a great show!!!
The show is moving to ION. so at least I’ll be able to get my fix. Sayonara, CBS!
PLEASE KEEP THE SHOWS COMING!!!!! It’s a great show with a heart.
One of my favorite shows. Hope CBS continues to license more episodes.
Love the show! I’m glad to see it’s at least being continued on ION
flashpoint is one of the highlights of the week. no two episodes are remotely alike. i love mysteries and try to figure it out before the end – flashpoint consistently delivers twists and turns to the story lines. I agree CBS should be promoting this show and i certainly hope they order the full series. it is one show that i DVR every week.
I agree with all of your reviews. CBS just doesn’t know what a great show they are letting go. If they would show the series in the fall instead of a summer fill-in, the viewership would surpass much of the junk they have on their line-up right now. For all you viewers who have ION, you can watch it on there, this fall.
I also agree with all of yall CBS would be crazy to let go of such a great show i also have a question for anyone who can answer it i know that its going to be on ion but are they gonna air new episodes????
Must you cancel all the good shows? Dang it, CBS! It’s not just that station it’s all of the networks. Yes I comes down to money and viewers. Keep this one going. We need more quality shows like this one on the air.
I love Flash Point-wish I had found this site sooner.
I am delighted it has been renewed! It is a wonderful show. We even make sure to record it if we are not going to be home when it airs!!!! CBS – Don’t lose this show!!!!!!
CBS, Please don’t let this show languish like some classic screw-ups (Fox and “Firefly” for example) when the network did not give the show a chance (i.e. scheduling, marketing)! This is a quality, well-scripted, suspensful, character-driven, unique program. Why don’t you market the heck out of it, and see what happens. Also, you’ve scheduled it for Friday nites – traditionally the graveyard of excellent programs. Thank goodness for DVRs!! Please continue to purchase the show from Canadian Broadcasting! (See how it rates as favorite program in Canada? Our close neighbors can’t be all wrong!) It has to be less expensive… Read more »
Great show !! Please renew !!!
I’m so tired of CBS just considering ratings and not quality, so tired. After the end of “Without a trace”, “Flashpoint” was the first tv series I felt like following and I grew more and more addicted to it. It’s well done and well played; it has rhythm, action, tension, humanity, humour – what are the CBS people looking for? What are viewers looking for? I’m more than happy to hear a fifth season will follow and if CBS doesn’t want it, so much the worse for it.
Well written, Irene. I can’t for the life of me, understand what CBS is thinking. Have they even watched any of the episodes? Apparently not, for if they had, I know they would be promoting the series, instead of shoving it to the back burner. It’s a much better series than that. It deserves to be better promoted and put in the fall line-up on CBS, They have really rued up on this one. Thank goodness, ION is going to carry it in the fall.
We need more shows like Flashpoint; how can we see it on Canadian station? If CBS is arrogant enought to drop it, how did they miss that many intelligent people, who really are the ones who purchase products, watch it. Do they really think that some of there own shows are better and if so, why are so many not returning? Maybe ION will pick it up as it is a superb show. I know it is my favorite as is Combat Hospital (maybe that one is a Canandian one also). Hmmmmm would seem that the Canadians are doing a… Read more »
