During the regular 2016-17 season, FOX aired 11 new or revived scripted shows and seven of them won’t be back for the 2017-18 season. How will the network do in the ratings this time around? How many of their TV shows will be cancelled or renewed? Stay tuned.
How do the execs decide what to cancel or keep? They look at a lot of different factors but the ratings play a very large role. The higher the ratings, the better chances a show has of surviving.
FOX shows this season (so far): 9-1-1, Bob’s Burgers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Empire, The Exorcist, Family Guy, The Four: Battle for Stardom, Ghosted, The Gifted, Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back, Gotham, Hell’s Kitchen, The Last Man on Earth, LA to Vegas, Lethal Weapon, Lucifer, MasterChef, MasterChef Junior, The Mick, New Girl, The Orville, The Resident, Showtime at the Apollo, The Simpsons, So You Think You Can Dance, Star, and The X-Files.

A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are therefore supposedly harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make room for something else?
Please dont cancel THE X-FILES and possibly also Gotham 🙂
Please do not cancel Lucifer or The Exorcist. The Exorcist is the only program that I have to watch on Friday nights, and not wait until later. Well written and acted.
PLEASE renew The Gifted, Gotham, and Lucifer!
DO NOT CANCEL LUCIFER!!!
Don’t cancel Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It is one of the best shows on television.
I agree, although the writing went to crap in last 2 seasons but still a pretty good show.
Glad Bob’s Burgers is temporarily beating Family Guy without a football boost.
P. S. I love watching EMPIRE SHOW!!!!!!!
Please FOX NETWORK DON’T CANCEL THE EXORCIST SHOW!!! I WOULD BE SOOO UPSET IF THIS SHOW WAS CHOSEN TO BE CANCELED OR EVEN ON THE POSSIBILITY BEING ON THE CANCELED LIST!!!!!
The Orville is the best Star Trek series since TNG, so nice to see it is doing well on FOX. 2nd season seems like a sure bet. FuN4J
Lol stop with the Star Trek Similarities please! Not everything relates to the show good Greek men get a real live
Well, the most recent episode was directed by Brannon Braga who also wrote an earlier episode and is a co-producer. BB helped write 20 episodes of TNG, 49 episodes of voyager, 2 NextGen movies, and was co-creator of Enterprise. So, yeah, Orville is kind of related because it has at least one of the same people as the Star Trek franchise.
Agreed. On numerous occasions, I’ve thought, “I feel like I’m watching Star Trek: The Orville.” I love it!
I love Brooklyn Nine-Nine! The characters are adorably funny and Adam Samberg is fantastic!
I wish Brooklyn Nine-Nine would never end!
Love The Orville ! PLease give it atlest 7 seasons!
There are 2 viewership charts.
Thanks!
Yay, Gotham fell the least.
SO SICK OF WATCHING SHOWS WITH FOIL LANGUAGE, AND HORROR STORIES! WANT THE MIDDLE BACK, AND LAST MAN STANDING, FAMILY SHOWS! BETTER TO WATCH CARTOONS, AND DISNEY, TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL!
I hope this is a joke
Brooklyn 99 is a family friendly show 99% of the time.
