During the regular 2016-17 season, FOX aired 11 new or revived scripted shows and seven of them won’t be back for the 2017-18 season. How will the network do in the ratings this time around? How many of their TV shows will be cancelled or renewed? Stay tuned.
How do the execs decide what to cancel or keep? They look at a lot of different factors but the ratings play a very large role. The higher the ratings, the better chances a show has of surviving.
FOX shows this season (so far): 9-1-1, Bob’s Burgers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Empire, The Exorcist, Family Guy, The Four: Battle for Stardom, Ghosted, The Gifted, Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back, Gotham, Hell’s Kitchen, The Last Man on Earth, LA to Vegas, Lethal Weapon, Lucifer, MasterChef, MasterChef Junior, The Mick, New Girl, The Orville, The Resident, Showtime at the Apollo, The Simpsons, So You Think You Can Dance, Star, and The X-Files.

A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are therefore supposedly harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make room for something else?
I love to watch The X Files with no lights on. The writing has been spectacular this season. Renew, renew, renew! I hope that Smoking Man’s in this one.
Please cancel The Exorcist. No one is watching because it’s terrible. Renew The Mick and Brooklyn 99.
For sure, The Resident will be renewed for a second season. It is FOX’s third highest rated scripted drama. It certainly is a welcome companion for shows such as ABC’s The Good Doctor; CBS’s Code Black; and NBC’s Chicago Med in the medical drama genre.
Please renew Lucifer!
Love 9-1-1! I am thrilled that one of the good shows actually made renewal. And also The Orville and The Gifted. However, Lethal Weapon is still waiting for renewal. You have the possibility to overtake the networks with the great shows you have been putting up. Don’t lose steam now! Please renew Lethal Weapon as well. An excellent show!
Also, Lucifer! Sorry, I had just found out The Gifted and 9-1-1 were renewed and had to edit my previous post. I meant to include Lucifer in the PLEASE RENEW line. It’s a wonderful show!
Original TV batman was pretty goofy… and the new version pays tribute to that with a lot more intensity. There are times when great characters and in depth stories break loose from the strange gratuitous weirdness that is to intense for my liking. Hope it moves forward fast, before it gets cancelled. I’d like to know the origins of Batman and Gordon fully. More story, less unnecessary cray-cray please.
Lethal Weapon is insightful and hilarious. At times unrealistically over the top but that’s its’ charm. Darkness and light all at once and fast paced. Perhaps more flashbacks would help pull in new viewers to bring them up to speed. Would hate to see this one go.
Please do not cancel, my top 2 best tv shows I love watching. Brooklyn Nine Nine and Ghosted. Fox you guys need to keep comedy shows alive, otherwise there will be nothing to watch.
The Resident is best new show in years.
I love it too! Sooo much better than Grey’s Anatomy.
Please renew the exorcist best show I’ve ever watched
Love The Resident!! Please renew this show!!
Thanks-a-million FOX for renewing the compelling first responder drama “9-1-1”. I hope you renew “The Resident” too. Viewer responses have been quite scathing to date, however, this does not fit with the actual 2nd place ranking it holds in viewer numbers. Of course, its fresh perspective on life in the profession of Medicine may not sit well with some people, but for those of us who really want to learn the no holes barred grit of working in healthcare, this may be THE genre-shifting drama since past classics “St. Elsewhere” and “ER”.
OOOOOOOPPPPPPPS!!!!! I am so sorry if I offended anybody out there. A slip of the finger on the keyboard can get me into all sorts of bother. When I was quoting a well known term I used in the above post, I meant “no holds barred”. I will be sure to do a thorough edit in my next post. Again, my sincere apologies folks!!!!!
we want more X.FILES episodes … the truth is closer than ever !!!!!!!
Don’t cancel LUCIFER or the X FILES
let there be a season 12 of the x-files please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE
