Well, it’s official. FOX has cancelled Thursday night drama Gracepoint after one season. There won’t be a second season on the network but there seems to be a small chance that it could continue elsewhere.
Gracepoint begins when a young boy is found dead on an idyllic beach in the small northern California town of Gracepoint. The tragedy and ensuing media frenzy soon turns neighbor against neighbor as the police try to figure out what happened. The cast includes David Tennant, Anna Gunn, Michael Peña, Virginia Kull, Madalyn Horcher, Kendrick Sampson, Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver, Kevin Rankin, Sarah-Jane Potts, Stephen Louis Grush, Kevin Zegers, Jessica Lucas, and Nikolas Filipovic.
The ratings for Gracepoint started out low and got worse as the season progressed. For whatever reason, many viewers just weren’t interested in the series — despite being assured that the mystery would be solved by the end of the 10 episodes.
With such poor ratings, it’s no surprise that FOX has cancelled the series. TVLine has confirmed it and actually, the network had already quietly told viewers it wasn’t coming back. At the end of a preview, the final episode of the season was called the “series finale.”
While Gracepoint won’t be returning to FOX, showrunner Dan Futterman has hopes that the Shine America production company will find an alternative home for the series. In a recent interview, he said, “You know as much as I do at this point. Shine, there’s been some changes at the company and so I don’t know what the intention is to do with the programming that they’ve got. [Co-showrunner Anya Epstein] and I would love the opportunity, but we don’t know any more than you do.”
What do you think? Would you like to Gracepoint return for a second season? Was FOX justified in cancelling this show? Would you watch season two on another channel?
We loved Grace point it is the one show my daughter and I watched faithfully every week, I would send the other kids in another room to play and then we were glued week to week, coming up with who we thought did it. We are very sad the show isn’t coming back
I am so disappointed! Just was browsing OnDemand, saw a Gracepoint preview, watched. It and decided to check online to see when it was coming back on ! I thought it was a great ! My husband and I watched faithfully. Now it just ends !? Terrible decision. I hope it shows somewhere! I’m open to watching the BBC original version but my. Husband doesn’t care for it. Lol….says he was used to the fox version and people And can’t adjust! It sucks to start a series and be left hanging in suspense.
I loved Gracepoint and wish it would return.
Not sure why they even made Gracepoint because the bbc version was 1. Perfect and 2. Perfect. There was no need whatsoever for an American remake. Anyone who was interested already watched the bbc version so I’m not surprised this was canceled after the season. I finally broke down and watched it because it was available on On Demand and I had time. DT was incredible and it was painfully obvious that the other actors in the show were no where near his level. If you want to see this show with higher calibre actors, watch the original. Acting is… Read more »
I’m not sure either why PBS just didn’t show Broadchurch because except for a few differences, the biggest one being the killer, it’s exactly the same as Gracepoint. I disagree that Gracepoint wasn’t as good as Broadchurch. I watched Broadchurch Season 1 on DVD and thought Gracepoint was just as good. I am glad that I am getting to see Broadchurch Season 2 on BBCA, but I think Fox should have had a Season 2.
This show held your interest from beginning to end. I would like to see it return. Now Secrets & Lies is out which is very similar. Who cares what channel, if you like a show you want to see it no matter what the channel.
I would love for gracepoint to return for season 2 on a different channel :).
I stumbled upon this series a couple of episodes in. I was hooked and caught up with it on On-Demand. I am now watching the second season of Broadchurch on On=Demand and am hooked on it as well. I would love to see the first season of Broadchurch so I can catch up on who exactly the different characters are; and how the two storylines differ, if any. I love the fact that both have David Tennant as the lead. PLEASE bring back Gracepoint! I became so hooked! The acting was superb and so was the writing. PLEASE!!!
I would definitely watch Gracepoint on any network that I can get. I think it’s STUPID to cancel it. It’s a GREAT program.
My family and I LOVED Gracepoint! We are very bummed about it being cancelled as it was one of the few shows on TV that wasn’t obnoxious garbage. Every now and again, one of us would bring it up and speculate what season 2 was going to bring. I guess we’ll never know now.
never saw the bbc version but watched every episode and enjoyed the series would watch season2 on another channel .hopefully someone will give it another shot.
I forgot to mention that the name of this series on BBC America is Broadchurch.
I thought the show was great. I found a continuation of the storyline on BBC America but I like the American version better. It’s a little difficult getting used to a totally different cast except for the lead detective.
I too, am watching the 2nd season of Broadchurch. I had to watch the first episode twice to get my bearings on who was who. Also there are tiny differences with sub plots. Tonight I watched the second episode and was a lot more acclimated.
GREAT show and cast. Bring it back!!!
I loved this series I found it very interesting as opposed to all the meaningless unfunny comedy’s
Loved the show! My husband and I watched every episode. I wish Fox would have given it another season to see if viewership improved. Would love to see it come back with better and longer advertising leading up to it. Many new shows have low viewership in the first season and even in to the next. A very well known show that won many awards last year also had low viewership in the first few seasons. Then it exploded and everyone was watching and knew about it. Hope they reconsider.
