David Lambert at TV Shows on DVD reports the Grady TV show, a Sanford and Son spin-off, starring Whitman Mayo as Grady Wilson, is coming to DVD as a manufacture-on-demand, in July. Grady was cancelled by NBC, after one season during which 10 episodes aired. The Grady TV series cast also includes: Carol Cole, Joe Morton, Rosanne Katon, and Haywood Nelson.
After Grady was cancelled, Mayo returned to Sanford and Son, and went on to the Sanford Arms sequel series, but left due to a salary disagreement. Sanford Arms was cancelled by NBC after four episode aired.
Here is more from TV Shows on DVD:
From fall 1973 to spring 1974, the legendary series Sanford and Son was airing its third season (out of six total) on NBC. In December ’73, NBC spun off one of the show’s popular characters into his own series, Grady, starring Whitman Mayo (who had played “Grady Wilson” in Sanford and Son, and would do so again, and then continue to play the character later on in the 1977 spin-off/continuation series Sanford Arms). Despite Redd Foxx making an appearance as “Fred Sanford” in the second episode of the 1973 show, Grady didn’t catch on with viewers and was cancelled after just 10 episodes.
Despite its short run, fans of Sanford and Son have often wished for the spin-off show to come to DVD…and now Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is making that happen! The studio hasn’t sent us an official announcement, but VideoETA, a site produced by distributor Ingram Entertainment, is showing that on July 26th Sony will release “Grady – Season 1 as an MOD (manufacture on demand) DVD. Cover art and details aren’t available yet, but the price shown is $30.99 SRP. Stay tuned for updates!
