A little over a week ago, NBC decided to cancel their new medical drama, Heartbeat. As a result of the cancellation, tonight’s episode is the TV show’s last. Was NBC justified in cancelling the series or should there be season two?
Set at the fictional St. Matthew’s Hospital, Heartbeat follows a cardio-thoracic surgeon, Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George), as she tries to juggle her personal and professional lives. She eagerly fights authority, particularly when it comes to her patients’ health and well-being. The rest of the cast includes Dave Annable, Don Hany, Joshua Leonard, Jamie Kennedy, D.L. Hughley, Shelley Conn, Maya Erskine, and J. Louis Mills.
Heartbeat debuted on March 22nd. It followed an episode of NBC’s highly-rated series The Voice and drew a 1.39 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.30 million viewers.
Heartbeat moved to its regular Wednesday night timeslot the next evening and the ratings saw a dramatic dip, falling to a 0.89 rating with 5.16 million. The numbers have kept dwindling downward. Last week’s penultimate episode drew a 0.67 in the demo with just 3.86 million.
Those kinds of numbers are just too low for NBC to justify renewing the series so the cancellation certainly wasn’t a surprise. The peacock network is already busy promoting their new drama series for the fall. It remains to be seen if they will do any better.
But, what do you think? Did you like the Heartbeat TV show? Was NBC justified in cancelling it or should the network have given the series more time and a second season?
Where are my comments. I posted this afternoon

They certainly cancelled the wrong show. Heartbeat had a different story line, very pleasing, talented actors, and something new in every episode. Everyone I know watched it. Seriously. A variety of age groups. Thirty somethings to Boomers. The show was very intriguing, with a bittersweet story line. We watched every show. Never missed it. Numbers? Put in the correct time slot. or NETFLIX – please rescue Heartbeat! NBC – Go ahead – cancel the good shows and keep the crap. Who cares what real fans care?
Well said Colleen, completely agree!
Great series, wonderful characters, exciting story lines, I never missed an episode
Right up there with The Night Shift, Chicago Med and Special Victims Unit
Why do networks cancel the best shows?
I agree with you. I also wish that The Night Shift was on for an entire season. Waiting almost a year is too long. It is definitely one of my favorite shows. I am so sad that they cancelled Heartbeat. I loved that show. I have watched the episodes twice by going On Demand.
Please bring Heartbeat back
Why don’t you just leave a good show alone
I loved this show and everyone I told about it fell in love with it too. It was my favorite show last year and just can’t believe it was canceled. Most people didn’t know about it……..very poor marketing!!!!
Seems all the networks do anymore is cancel the great shows and keep the stupid ones. What’s worse is if you kill off a show there should be an ending and not a cliff hanger. They should be required to have a last episode to end it off instead of leaving millions hanging. They want people to be involved and watch but then you do and what do they do they cancel it.
WHY! I hope NETFLIX picks up! I am so sick of all these reality shows. HEARTBEAT was a show I could watch with my kids and it had an impact on them. Im ready to get rid of Cable and stick with NETFILX where we can watch programs with a meaning, not this BULL**** you call reality TV. If this is reality for some people our Youth and FUTURE is in ALOT of TROUBLE!!!
i love this series…. please bring it back…
I loved this series it shouldn’t had been cancelled!!!
I hope another network picks this terrific show up.
It was a good serie !!! BRING IT BACK !!!!
Just saw the last airing in South Africa.. loved the show! Definitely should have been a second season!! So bummed by this news
PLEASE PLEASE NBC bring back HEARTBEAT! This show brought tears to my eyes every episode. It wasn’t just about the medical story it was about the personal story of the “patient” It had heart, compassion, fight. This was not a boring medical drama set in a hospital. Please bring it back~
WE have just seen the final episode in South Africa. It was a brilliant show….makes no sense why the rating were low….quirky, brave characters, compassionately acted…instead we will be fed more formulaic nonsense, all th other medical shows are same-ole same-old. Trump as a nominee, and cancelling shows that show some guts……America is in a bad way!!
