Last night, we reported that Hallmark Channel had abruptly “parted ways” with longtime Home & Family co-host Mark Steines. The cable channel’s official statement was a bit cryptic: “Today Hallmark Channel has parted ways with Mark Steines as the co-host of the network’s lifestyle series Home & Family. We are extremely grateful to Mark for his incredible work and wish him all the best success in his future endeavors.”
Given that Steines was immediately removed from the Home & Family site, more than a few people wondered if there was more to the story. Today, Hallmark made it clear that the channel had no issues with Steines. Management wants to take the series in a different direction and Steines was not part of that change.
Here’s today’s statement: “Shows evolve and change all the time. Mark has been an instrumental part of Home & Family for the past 6 years, and we are extremely grateful for his incredible work and leadership. We truly wish Mark all the best in his future endeavors.”
According to Deadline, Steines was blindsided by Hallmark’s plans and was told he was off the show only after he finished taping Thursday’s show (on Wednesday).
According to a representative of Steines, he was let go for “creative reasons”. The rep noted, “We had had nothing but positive reviews and feedback from Hallmark for the entirety of the time he has been on the show, including this year.” It is believed that Steines still had time left on his contract so it wasn’t about contract negotiations.
Steines’ co-host, Debbie Matenopoulos, fought back tears as she delivered the news to viewers at the end of today’s show. She was surrounded by seven contributors on the show’s couch.
Welcome back, everybody. So, I’m here to share some news. And the family has joined me because we truly are a family here. Now, although we had a great show, we have a hard announcement to make. We have a very hard announcement to deliver. Our dear friend, our very good friend, and my wonderful co-host for years, Mister Mark Steines, is no longer with Home & Family.
He has been an amazing friend to all of us here at Hallmark Channel, the cast, the crew and a wonderful friend to all of you at home as well. And we are grateful to Mark, and we want to thank him from the bottom of our hearts for six of the most incredible years that he has had here hosting this incredible show that, he helped build. He really did.
He’s been here from the beginning and a lot of this show has Mark’s handprint on it, so we support him in everything he does in the future, his future endeavors. We will miss him dearly and we will think about him fondly and often and we thank you all at home for your kindness and understanding and your support and for being part of our family every day.
Thank you so much, everyone. Thank you for joining us and we’ll see you back here on Monday.
This isn’t the first time that a Home & Family co-host has been suddenly dropped from the program’s “family”. Matenopoulos’ predecessor, Cristina Ferrare, was quietly removed from the program nearly two years ago. She had theoretically been on vacation for two weeks before it was announced that she was simply no longer with the program. This led many viewers to assume that Ferrare was sick (which was not the case) and led to a lot of hard feelings from viewers toward her replacement.
It’s unclear if Steines will be replaced. On Monday’s show, Matenopoulos will be joined by guest host James Denton, one of the stars of Hallmark’s Good Witch series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Steines has been fired by Hallmark? Will you continue to watch the Home & Family TV show? If they wanted to make a change, could Hallmark have handled this in a better way?
I rarely watch after you cut Christina, Debby is just not a good replacement and I tuned in today and see that Mark is now gone. I’m done with watching now but mostly it’s because of your firing Christina who was very believable as the host and Debby is just not believable as a domestic person at all
I loved Mark & Debbie together as host & Hostess! I fail to understand why u think getting rid of Mark will improve this show!
Think again!! You did the same thing with Cristina , now Mark! I probably will no be viewing this show beat as much with Mark gone!!!!
Jackie Wilson
I was very sorry to see Mark go. At the same time, his jokes were getting repetitive using words in different ways, their double meanings, or whatever. ALSO, when the girls were doing their craft segments, he seemed bored and hurried them along too much. I have no problem with him as a host but the show didn’t seem to fit him anymore. I know he will go on to do great things in his life as he has already accomplished so much!
Good luck Mark!
Does anyone at Hallmark read any of this? I was surprised that some of the comments are months old and I haven’t noticed a change of any kind to improve the quality of the show.
I enjoy watching the program because it relaxes and calms me. I think the replacements are loud and not what I want to watch. I avoid the other channels due to those bouncy , elevated performers and now the hallmark channel has followed suit.. I also want to address the fact that it is also time for those programs from 10 pm till early morning to be changed. Enough is enough, how many times over can someone watch this. I turn the channel after. 10 pm. I also don’t watch until movies come on in afternoon.. I enjoy the movies,… Read more »
I agree with Linda i only wath home and family when they talk about the movies .It is the same when Mark was on but Camera is loud not right for this show. Bring Mark and someone else to take Debbie’s shes loud also talkes over others.
I do so agree. I dvr now just to watch the d.i.y. (mostly). Cameron is a little to aggressive for me. I like him in movies but not here all the time. I agree about Debbie (sometime) too.
I cannot believe that Hallmark let Mark go!! I hope he gets a better job for him and his family. Television shows are getting worse instead of better.
Christina and Mark made the show,Debbie is just not for this show I’m not watching anymore yall need to get a grip on who’s deserving of being on show and who’s not
I agree – Mark was such a positive asset to the show. I loved his self-deprecating sense of humor and his graciousness to his guests. My personal opinions: I thought Debbie was rude to Mark, making rude comments, talking over him (and everyone else!), and/or ignoring him altogether. I like the Hallmark channel however I have stopped watching “Home & Family” – the executives of the show should be “parted” from the show for such a suicidal decision.
Well, well, well, the plot thickens! Mark has filed suit against Hallmark!!!! Says they fired him for standing up for his female co workers who accused Woody for sexual harrassment. Even though Woody left the show after the accusations came to light, Hallmark still retaliated against Mark. Shame on Hallmark!!
Will not be watching ruined this show nothing against host or co-host.
This has ruined Home and Family nothing against host and co-host now but will not be watching.
I feel the show is less interesting than before. I think Debbie is doing well, but I miss Mark and the former male guests. I still watch occasionally, but not everyday as I used to do.
I always though they should have let Mark go, kept Christina and gotten a new male co-host, which I think Cameron is great. IMO
Christina and Mark were the whole show. it went down hill in my opionon since christina left and now mark. I stopped watching it everyday since christina was booted off the same way. I will not be watching at all now that mark is also done.
Hallmark Channel is my favorite channel on TV. I’ve got so many mixed emotions on the firing of Christina and Mark. I know that the world and programs are forever changing. I get it. But the way these two people were fired, was uncalled for. What “Created Reasons”? They were really good decent people. I feel a BIG mistake was made here. I watch this show EVERY DAY. I don’t know how I feel now. Hallmark is messing with peoples lives now, this was their livelihood. All I can say is, I wish them both much luck in finding them… Read more »
I agree with everything this person has said…my feeling are definitely the same!
I feel the same way! I haven’t watched the show much after Christina was BOOTED off the show.
Nope done watching, debbie drives me nuts !! You let wrong person go!!!
I have to agree with you. I really like the show 3 years ago the best. I just wish they would be more professional in letting the viewers know why! But I do like watching it for tips on recipes, crafts, and all the other things they share to help with life. Life is hard enough but being blindsided is bad marketing for the show. Now I only watch every so often.
I can’t believe that Hallmark acted so unprofessional in the way they let go. I can’t stand Cameron. I also can’t stand how they all talk over one another. It’s like they are all competing against one another except Kim. Sometimes you can’t even follow the directions because they are so busy talking and not letting their guests talk especially the cheats. Debbie likes to show off all her knowledge. I will not watch the show as often as I did. I’ll find something else.
Definetly will miss Mark. I agree I don’t think Hallmark handled it right at all. With all the other firings due to sexual harassment it makes him look like he did something wrong too , this not fair to him.
Will not watch.
So right.
