It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

I just discovered In Treatment on HBO. I, too, think it’s brilliant. Another format has been mentioned. What would that be? A movie, maybe. The character of Paul is so interesting, I’m afraid a movie might simplify him. I wouldn’t like that. How he and his patients reflect one another and how he grows or regresses is part of the complexity of the series.
IN TREATMENT is a brilliant series. I hope the decision not to continue with Season 4 is reversed.
I have purchased the first three seasons and they are in my personal library. I am hoping to fill the shelf with further seasons.
I think this is a brilliant series. I am hoping that the decision not to produce further seasons will be reversed. Not only have I watched the first three seasons — I actually bought them for my personal library.
My husband & I just finished watching Season 3. We thought there was a season 4 & are quite disappointed that it ended. The actors were all brilliant and we enjoyed all of the story lines. We would at least like to see a movie that wraps it all up.
I just finished watching season 3 (via Amazon prime)I thought the series was amazing and am quite sad there will not be a season 4. Gabriel Byrne was fantastic I can only imagine how demanding playing that character must have been. Of course I fell in love with him when I first saw him in a movie called Siesta back in the 80s. I thought he was a great actor then and seeing him portray Dr. Paul Weston all these years later confirms my first impression (top notch). I hope HBO can bring the series back in some form or… Read more »
I am jusr now watching episode after episode on demand. I think Gabriel Byrne is a wonderful actor, as well as every actor on this show. I am currently in Season 2, Pauls father hss just passed away. I understand its a heavy show, but watching the behaviour of Paul both as a therapist and a patient in therapy shows the range and emotions Paul goes through each week. Wish they would bring tjis show back.
I liked the show very much and would like an additional season. Great acting by Gabriel Byrne in a difficult role. The ending seemed somewhat unfinished!
please bring us a season 4. this show is awesome!!!
Yes! Where is season 4?! I love Paul and want follow ups on Laura and other patients. Did Gina write another book? What happened to the patients?
Absolutely love it!!! Please bring back. It is so rich!
PLEASE BRING BACK THE SHOW, Gabriel Byrne is an amazing actor.!!!
I ABSOLUTELY loved the show in treatment. Very disappointed it was cancelled. Please bring it back HBO!!
I, like Susan, just discovered In Treatment in 2015, and sat and watched seasons one and two in a very short amount of time. I am savoring season 3, as there is no season 4. PLEASE bring back either another season of this show, or something exactly like it!
Please bring back Season 4. I am amazed that this show did not bring in the numbers needed to keep it going. I thought it was the best HBO series I have seen. Just discovered 2015 and eagerly watched all Seasons over 2 week period.
Me too!!
I was disappointed to see there was no season 4.. please bring it back.. love this show… great character development and life stories.
