It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

Just watched all three seasons. I hope you will strongly consider continuing the series in any form. Thoroughly enjoyed watching it!!!
It’s re-running now on HBO. The first season was the best, but I would love to see more of it.
Yes really enjoyed the show. Would like it to go on.
Yes, please, continue In Treatment in some form! We enjoyed it.
I’ve loved all three seasons and am disappointed to learn there won’t be a 4th! Gabriel was incredible in his role as Dr Paul Weston. Please consider a way to continue in some form for the hundreds of thousands of us who love the show!
What a shame there will be no series 4. So unique and so disappointing it will end here. Please rethink bringing back this awesome series. Gabriel Byrne is fabulous and his acting is so raw and powerful.
I recently came across the In Treatment series on DVD and actually devoured the three series in as many weeks! From the first episode I was hooked! I think In Treatment is one of the most honest and engaging TV series I have ever watched. It is so mesmerising being the third person looking in on these deeply intimate, soul searching sessions and seeing the characters open up and storylines unfold with each episode. It is superbly scripted and consumately acted – I have been totally drawn in to each and every story line. It is unlike anything else I… Read more »
Very disappointed the show was cancelled. I thought it was great and learned so much from the insights this show provided.
I am very disappointed the series was cancelled!!!
It is one of the best and most intellectual series I have ever watched and I work in the entertainment industry. It is a shame that you discontinued it due to the ratings. When will someone be brave enough to let a series play to an audience that is stimulated by intellect rather than by violence.
It is an amazing TV show. After I have discovered it, I have watched all the 3 seasons I think in maximum three weeks. Deep, insightful. I found myself thinking about certain observations, connections made there during my day, and even long after I have seen a certain episode. I feel it was really inspiring, and I am quite certain that it have changed the way I think about relationships and life in general. I have to say it is painful that it has ended, and there is no season four. I am not only sad, but a little bit… Read more »
Very disappointed it is cancelled! Please change your mind!
Agreed. Just binged the entire series. I’m sad they ended something so unique and interesting. I doubt they’ll bring it back or do anything with the series (considering this article is five years old and nothing has come of it yet). It’d be fun to see what happened to Paul five years later, seeing as he was embarking on a huge life change. I want to know how his family ended up. They were used sparsely but with great impact. I’ll probably watch it again someday. Pail was such an beautiful character, who was becoming more interesting as he began… Read more »
I am so disappointed that it has been cancelled! Hope you come up with more, for the many loyal viewers, of which I am one.
Just discovered IN TREATMENT! Accolades! First time I actually could not get enough of a though-provoking , powerful drama.
well, it can be ” not for everyone” but In treatment is most intelligence TV series I have ever seen. Will be mistake to stop it like this.
