It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

Completely saddened as the series did not complete its run of stories. As a highly case driven story, exceptions can be made and accepted when stories became elborate or difficult to conclude, this I can excuse as it came about…..but the fact that the series ENDED upon the DAWNING of the main characters SPECIFIC issues having been analysed WITHOUT EVEN ONE MORE SHOW to conclude SOMETHING of Dr. Westons insight by his new therapist ….I think can only be described as CRUEL and NOT GIVING A DAMN or a brass razzoo! On realising the series didn’t conclude, I can’t even… Read more »
I love this series and I am very disappointed that there is n plans for a season 4! Please reconsider HBO!!
This series had substance not only in the stories but also in the acting. I just binge watched all 3 seasons and am beyond disappointed that there will be no resolution. I feel like if this show failed, it had to be lack of interest on someone’s part and not because it wasn’t good enough. Could it have been lack of promoting? I realize it was cancelled (and aired) several years ago, but I don’t remember ever hearing of this until I saw it On Demand. Not sure if I had HBO in those yrs, but I have always been… Read more »
Would really like to see the characters and story line continue. Would definetly watch it. Also, have told several people about it!!
This show serves many purposes. Great acting. Please continue. I will miss watching.
In Treatment was absolutely tremendous & mesmerizing. Acting was suberb & scripts we’re honest & true to life. Wish there could be many more seasons or even movies…
In Treatment is by leaps and bounds the BEST show HBO has ever … produced/shown/whatever you call it!!!
Not everyone that watches HBO is a twisted Game of Thrones freak. There are some of us intellectuals around! Obviously not enough….so I’m moving to Israel to watch the original!!!
Tell Wahlberg to start producing more seasons!!!!!
I miss the series…!
Please,
we are waiting the Season forth, eagerly…
just finished season 3, and I’m kinda down now, that there is no more:(
Absolutely,
I am very sorry that;
“in Treatment” is finished.
I could not believe that..!
They are living on my mind.
Forever,
I will wait the next episodes,
enthusiastically…
Please…
I was transfixed by In Treatment, and very enthusiastic that TV was showing the many faces and possibilities of therapy. The scripts were excellent. We could see the counter-transference issues. The actors were riveting. The only flaw was the doctor’s tendency to react romantically with a patient and his own two female therapists. Yet that was a rich vein too: why did he have that vulnerability? It should have been discovered in his own training but apparently he did not tackle it, or Gina his supervisor did not find a way to get him to face it. I know the… Read more »

I’ll take it in whatever form the producers decide. It really makes you think!
Wish there were more season … loved this series !
in Treatment is one of the best series I have watched on TV. It is original, creative, engaging. Garcia is very competent and the cast extraordinary. Gabriel Byrne is great! I love his performance.
I hope it will continue. Thank you Garcia for your genial
creation.
