As suspected, the Intruders TV show has been cancelled after one season of eight episodes. BBC America and BBC Two have decided not to order a second season.
On Intruders, a former LAPD detective (John Simm) investigates strange occurences which lead him to a secret society whose members seek immortality by taking over the bodies of others. The rest of the cast includes Mira Sorvino, Tory Kittles, James Frain, and Millie Brown.
Executive producer Glen Morgan broke the news of the cancellation on Twitter and wrote, “Well, Reverti, this life is over. Intruders will live only in 8 episodes. We can’t thank those that supported us enough… #Intruders such an intelligent audience willing to be challenged and face tough questions. Hope we will all be triggered in 9 years. What goes around, comes around. #Intruders. Thank you! 9!”
Michael Marshall Smith, who wrote The Intruders novel, had this to say about the cancellation:
Sadly, we are finally able to announce that BBCA will not be renewing INTRUDERS.
The remit was to adapt the book, which Glen and his team did brilliantly. It was never a given there would be more — though we did discuss ideas for future arcs — and for a variety of reasons the first season had to out-perform the norm in order to continue. Unfortunately it did not.
Why? Well, they didn’t play it safe. The show was distinctive and unusual, narratively uncompromising and texturally bold. In a world where many viewers will bail after twenty minutes because something’s not just like everything else, it dared to ask people to care — to keep the faith and wait to see what happens next. They didn’t sell the book short: they did it proud. As an novelist that makes you feel very privileged, and grateful.
A huge thanks to everyone who watched and supported the show — you made the whole thing fun, before and during, and are still doing so afterwards. I’m glad to know you.
I also feel extremely honoured to have had a book worked on by so many people of such extraordinary talent. Producers like Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter (and Jess Pope, who doggedly developed the show for years in the UK before it came to BBCA); a developer of Glen’s unique vision and experience, writers like Kristen and Darren; the remarkable cast of actors in roles both large and small; creative geniuses like Mark Freeborn and Bear McCreary; directors like Daniel Stamm and Eduardo Sanchez — not to mention the social media and marketing people from BBCA who gave it such loving attention here in the US.
What do you think? Do you like the Intruders TV show? Do you think that it should have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Really! So tired of great shows being cancelled for mind numbing reality shows or remakes of old stuff. This was an exciting show and I watched every episode, got all my coworkers to watch and we would discuss it all week. That’s what makes a show good, that you can talk about it and anticipate the next episode to see what questions will be answered and what new ones will arise. Sad to see it will not be returning.
Intruders was freaking awesome , Like so many I invest time getting to know and love the series only to find it cancelled …. That said it’s so typical of the BBC another great show that was on a different wave length was “The Zoo” well written great characters had over 5 million viewers a night in the UK and cancelled after one season… Who are these people making the decisions at the BBC.
I too was just looking up when Intruders season 2 was coming up & find this terrible news. I was becoming suspicious this spring when I heard James Frain was on Orphan Black. I loved Intruders from the first episode – I enjoy real science fiction & hate what always happens to “smart” shows – they get canceled more often than not. Replaced by endless reruns of idiotic shows & disgusting reality tv….or formulaic dramas, that I can predict the story & the dialogue each & every week! I also got sucked in by BBC’s Tatau – It was suddenly… Read more »
I have been waiting to hear about season 2..I am so disappointed… Was a great show…
I don’t get it.. BBC pretty stupid…..
Thanks for a big tease of a great show..
I agree with Boweygirl. Whoever created reality shows should be shot…….
So sorry this series is not to be continued. Hopefully someone will pick it up. I have been combing the upcoming releases to see when it would start, then had the brainwave to actually check your site. Needless to say I am baffled why it was dropped.
its hard to find good tv these days…. all they want you to see is the fake bs facade of buying this and that and you need this and that to be “happy”… but as soon as a show satarts breaking those barriers and freeing our minds to whats actually happening in this place we call a world…they take it down and hide the truth…. but let them hide…we will find them…WHAT GOES AROUND…..COMES AROUND
I saw the commercial for Intruders on BBCAmerica and thought it was cool, so I decided to watch the premiere as soon as it was on. To be honest, I had mixed feeling about the show and didn’t know if I liked it or if I was just confused. To be fair to the show I continued to watch it and found myself falling more in love with the show. I especially loved the ending with Maddison. When I saw the possibility for a second season was hinted at the very end of the last episode, I got so excited… Read more »
Come on…really..why do they always cancel shows that are good but continue to air some of the dumbest reality shows. This is some bull…….
I am filled with rage over the decision to cancel this brilliantly conceived, and written series.
In a time when one can find hours of mindless entertainment on every channel, especially here in the states, this program provided a thoughtful story arc that respected the viewers intelligence.
Hmmm… I’m seeing a potential for some very creative, independent fan fiction in the future.
Please renew!!!!!!
I don’t think I’ll watch any series on BBC. I really liked Intruders. I don’t want to get into a series knowing BBC probably won’t support it. Why invest time watching when it will be cancelled after ONE season.
Intruders was one of the few shows that I was sincerely looking forward to another season from. This show was very well cast and written and had me from the first episode. It leaves you wondering why the BBC would rather take a chance with another start up as opposed to giving this another season and a bit more promotion to actually grab the ratings it was certainly capable of getting.
I know I’m late with this but I just have to say how terribly disappointed I am that Intruders was cancelled. I loved the complexity of the show and thought the acting was brilliant. Honestly, this was one of my favorite shows of last year. I only hope that it will get picked up by another station that is willing to take the chance.
BBC Idiots
