Sadly, Lie to Me’s fate is still undecided. The FOX drama was given a full season renewal in November but the network has delayed its return until after the May sweeps period. That’s exactly a show of faith. And now, showrunner Shawn Ryan has jumped ship.
Lie to Me follows Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth), a human lie detector, and his team of experts who help law officials solve their most difficult cases. The cast also includes Kelli Williams, Brendan Hines, Mekhi Phifer, and Monica Raymund.
Last season, Lie to Me had a very healthy series premiere with a 4.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 12.37 million viewers. Those numbers slowly melted away though and, by the end of the season, dipped to a low of a 2.3 in the demo and 7.75 million. Despite the decline, FOX renewed Lie to Me for a second season of 13 episodes. Shawn Ryan (The Shield) was brought in as a new showrunner.
Year two kicked off in September to a 2.9 rating and 7.73 million viewers. Though Lie to Me was losing a significant percentage of the House lead-in, FOX gave the series a full season renewal and added nine episodes. Soonafter, Lie to Me hit a new low with a 2.2 rating and 6.64 million viewers.
FOX put the series on hiatus in December and it already looked destined to be on the bubble for a third season renewal.
It was expected that Lie to Me would return before the end of the 2009-10 season but FOX chose instead to hold original episodes until June 7th. That means they won’t air until after the May sweeps period and until after FOX has announced their 2010-11 schedule.
FOX execs could make their decision based on Lie to Me’s existing ratings data. Or, they could wait until after some more original episodes have aired in the lesser-watched summer months. Neither option is likely to put Lie to Me in a very positive light.
Now, it’s been announced that Ryan, the program’s well-respected showrunner, has decided to leave the show. He’s already committed to a new drama he created for FX called Terriers. It also looks likely that FOX will pick up his other new show, Ride Along.
While none of this means that Lie to Me will necessarily be cancelled, it’s certainly not positive news — especially if FOX execs like what they see in Ride Along. Why stick with a show that’s lost Ryan as a showrunner and has been losing viewers when you can pick up Ryan’s new show that’ll get some attention and might do a lot better. FOX may make a decision about season three at the upfronts next Monday or not for a couple months.
Whether Lie to Me is renewed or cancelled, it seems very likely that viewers will still get to see all 12 of the remaining episodes for this season.
What do you think? Does Lie to Me have a good chance of returning for season three? What would you do — keep it or cancel it and go with something new?

If this show is canceled I will hate FOX forever. I know my opinion doesn’t matter to them but the bottom line for me (and should be for them) is that viewer loyalty crosses over from one show to the next. I am tired of being disappointed with favorite shows that are dropped. Why would I begin to watch a new show when I know FOX will disappoint again? They certainly do not know how to recognize anything of substance. If Lie to Me has bad ratings it is because it was not well marketed. The long gaps between episodes… Read more »
keep , Lies to me, on the air!!!!!!
Please keep this one on the air…..I just found out about it a few weeks ago….loved it
and ordered and watched the first season from Netflix to catch up on the history and
story, etc……I do not like 70% on what is on tv now…..but this is a good one!!
One of the few shows I watch on a regular basis! I vote to continue with the series.
I love this show. Please leave it!!
I am part of the targeted demographic as well as my oldest child and we love the show. I am not part of the ratings process but also understand a large part of the group watches TV on there laptop or computer and not on a TV. I watch the commercials I can’t skip them like a DVR I just want to watch it when I can I work when it’s on TV.
Just my 2 cents
Please keep this show. I have never been more addicted to a TV show before this incredibly smart, sharp show with deep characters, riveting story lines, and perfectly satisfying solutions to tough crimes. This is the only TV show I currently watch; my thoughts stray throughout the day to what Cal Lightman will do next.
Keep it!!! It’s great.
This show is fantastic. Please give it time to gain viewership.
Geez, Lie to Me is a great show…
Who can’t like Tim Roth? He’s awesome…
…keep the show on the air
I love this show, please keep it!! I don’t get to watch it often when it actually airs because of work, but I haven’t missed a single episode thanks to hulu.
I never heard of this show until this past Sunday (June 6) when they aired a mini-marathon of Lie To Me episodes on the FX channel. I never watch Fox, but I surf channels like FX all the time, looking for movies. I sat riveted to the TV for the entire marathon – I could not tear myself away. A fascinating show. Great characters. PLEASE keep it. Fox is notorious for greenlighting great shows and then cancelling them. Really pisses me off. If I was a TV writer, I would NEVER sell my show to Fox because of their track… Read more »
This show is SMART TV! The network needs to give time for people to find it, watch it, and appreciate it…I can’t say enough good things about it. With so much crap TV out there, I gain knowledge from this show, as well as enjoy it to the max!
Please keep this show going! It’s truly original, and I love it! I don’t watch TV very much, but I watch Lie to Me every week!!!!PLEASE don’t cancel it!
Please leave it on , it is the best show I have seen in years!
