Last year, Magnum PI wasn’t a big hit on Monday nights. CBS renewed the series for a second season but moved it to Fridays where ratings expectations are lower (particulalry in the 18-49 demo). Will this be a good move for Thomas and company or, will it spell the end of the show? Will Magnum PI be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. Status Update Below.
An action-drama series, Magnum PI stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill. This reboot of the 1980s TV show follows Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a decorated former Navy SEAL who repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. He lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins (Weeks), a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent who keeps Magnum in line. When Magnum needs back-up on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, chopper pilot Theodore “TC” Calvin (Hill) and Orville “Rick” Wright (Knighton), a former Marine door-gunner who now runs a nightclub. Magnum frequently has run-ins with police detective Gordon Katsumoto (Kang) and the two are more alike than either cares to admit. Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta (Hill) is one of Magnum’s biggest fans and is also the unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/9 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: Season one of Magnum PI on CBS averaged a 0.89 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.99 million viewers.
Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the Magnum PI TV series on CBS? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
5/6 update: Magnum PI has been renewed for a third season.
this show should never have been made, there’s only one Magnum and hopefully will be cancelled for season 3……come on CBS get some original material
It’s alway hard for fans of an original series to accept a new reimagined/reboot series. So far Hawaii Five-O has been successful and I personally like the new Magnum P.I., even though in my mind when I hear the name Thomas Magnum, I think of Tom Selleck. Nevertheless, I think of Magnum P.I. similar to the Bond movies. A new actor plays the iconic character to introduce the character to a new generation. The racial and gender swap of certain characters represents what the new generation would accept and it act to drawn in new fans as well as fans… Read more »
Please renew this show Magnum PI
Love Magnum PI!! It’s a series I can see having many seasons. All the characters are of course great. I wish people would stop comparing it to the old Magnum though. I think it’s funny when people get so angry because “only Tom Selleck can be Magnum.” Get over it, that show was on 30+ years ago.
I agree. I’m actually old enough to have watched the original Magnum PI back in the 80’s with Selkdck. Loved it, but also know that what you watched back then wouldn’t play well on TV today, so it needed to be updated with the times. I like the new Magnum PI and hope they renew for a 3rd season.
Placing it on Mondays was a joke trying to go against all the reality show veterans like the Bachelor, American Ninja Warrior, DWTS. Fridays will not provide any help either but Hawaii Five-O has been there for 9 seasons so possibly they are prepping Magnum to take over their slot since it is their final season.
Love the show!
Love magnum PI..great show. Love the kindness and the fun of friends saving all the bad guys.. Helping others and working hard…
Absolutely love this series!!
You can’t compare the reboot to the original; different time, different people. With that being said, the new show has possibility. I like the actors & their chemistry. I hope CBS also considers “streaming” viewers who watch the show when it becomes available to them in their statistics. The way people view shows has greatly changed. They should renew Magnum.
I liked the show last year, and looked forward to its 2nd season. But. WHY is it that the networks ALL have to move the decent shows around to compete & CHOKE OUT other good shows?? It’s infuriating!! There are several shows that I will NOT miss, so why torpedo each of the new contenders? There’s plenty of open slots left. Rant over.
Please renew…LOVE the show!
I love the new Magnum and the whole cast!! Thank you for season two!! Hopefully more seasons to come!! Thanks
Dumb show! This clown can’t hold a torch to Tom Selleck! Gave it a shot, and was yawning to tears by the third episode!
Please renew Magnum!! We really enjoy it. You can’t compare the new version to the original. It can stand on its own. The characters are relatable and really feed off each other. The story lines are interesting and , let’s face it, who doesn’t want to see more of Hawaii?
People watch TV differently these days. Thus a good show. Renew for a 3rd season
I didn’t like season 2 first episode
What a disgrace that CBS would reboot this series. Of course it’ll tank. Nobody and I mean NOBODY can be Magnum except the great Tom Selleck.
Please renew. I think the acting is excellent and the actors are well cast. I enjoyed last season and look forward to this season.
I just love Magnum PI! Loved the first season, please renew the show! Excellent cast, excellent content! Look forward to many more seasons!
