When The Closer TV show ended in 2012, fans of the Kyra Sedgwick crime drama could take some solace knowing that many of the characters would stick around via the Major Crimes spin-off. Soon, it will be time to say goodbye to that series as well.
TNT has announced that a seventh season renewal won’t be coming for Major Crimes. The sixth and final season will kick off on Halloween, October 31st, at 9pm (ET/PT). The two-episode series finale will air on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
Here’s the press release from TNT:
TNT’s Hit Series Major Crimes Concludes with Sixth and Final Season Premiering on Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)
Two-Episode Series Finale to air on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)
Television’s beloved squad of detectives will tackle their three final cases when TNT’s hit drama Major Crimes returns for its sixth and final season on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). The series, a spin-off of the critically-acclaimed hit, The Closer, features a stellar ensemble cast headed by two-time Oscar® nominee Mary McDonnell. Also starring are G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Phillip P. Keene, Graham Patrick Martin, Kearran Giovanni, Jonathan Del Arco, Leonard Roberts, Jessica Meraz and Daniel di Tomasso. This season, the hugely popular crime drama marks its 100th episode milestone on Dec. 19 with the two-episode series finale airing on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
“Major Crimes has successfully navigated the many challenges that arise with a spin-off; the primary mission of which is staying true to its core DNA while expanding into unique territory all its own,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT. “From Brenda Leigh Johnson to Commander Sharon Raydor, the cast and crew have done a phenomenal job of creating enduring characters – many of whom are celebrating 200 episodes together this season.”
This year, the series takes a serialized turn as the squad struggles to solve mysteries and murders surrounded by complex political conflicts, attempting to sidestep controversial issues as they track down three lethal murderers. As Cmdr. Sharon Raydor grows accustomed to her new boss, Assistant Chief Leo Mason, the detectives find themselves questioning their faith in the rapidly changing priorities of the justice system and their ability to reason through difficult changes. The emotionally gripping season will treat fans to an array of milestones from celebrations of love to periods of loss. Finally, they must accept the necessity of risk, in all its different guises, as they prepare to face the increasingly undeniable return of Phillip Stroh (guest star Billy Burke).
“The whole company of Major Crimes is dedicated to making 2017-18 the best season yet,” said series creator, James Duff. “We will finish our long run on TNT with a finale worthy of our loyal viewers and their years of unstinting support.”
Since its chart-topping debut in 2012, Major Crimes has consistently ranked as one of cable’s most-watched drama series. In its most recent season and spring run on TNT, the series reached an average 7.7M viewers per episode across linear, VOD, and digital platforms.
In addition to the main cast, Major Crimes features recurring appearances by Jon Tenney as Deputy Chief of the Special Operations Bureau Fritz Howard, Ransford Doherty as Coroner’s Investigator Kendall, Kathe Mazur as DDA Andrea Hobbs, Rene Rosado as Gus Wallace, Dawnn Lewis as Patrice Provenza and Bill Brochtrup as LAPD psychologist, Dr. Joe Bowman.
Created by James Duff, Major Crimes is produced by The Shephard/Robin Company and Walking Entropy, Inc., in association with Warner Bros. Television. James Duff, Greer Shephard & Michael M. Robin, Adam Belanoff, Mike Berchem and Duppy Demetrius serve as executive producers.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Major Crimes TV show? Is this the right time to end the series? Would you have watched season seven?
This is one of my feel-good shows. I love the comradery between the characters. They were like a family. The acting is excellent and the storylines were interesting and respectful. I will miss it.
Really ticks me off. Not everyone wants ‘edgier fare,’ evidenced by the fact that this is TNT’s highest rated show. This is EXACTLY the fare we in my house want. PLEASE RECONSIDER
I really hate the thought of this show being cancelled. I watch very little television and this is one show that I really look forward to seeing. I have never missed a episode. I hope they rethink this and give it one more year. So many things left to tell.
This cancellation is a travesty of EPIC PROPORTIONS !!!! I can’t believe that TNT would cancel a show that has so many more stories to tell and has such a HUGE following . Are they that stupid and ageist ? The other shows they are trying to peddle are glorifying bad behavior . They are crap !!!! And I will no longer watch TNT once Major Crimes is over !!!!!!!!!
TNT is crazy for canceling this great show ! Major Crimes squad room is the home of one terrific family and there are so many more parts of their lives to explore. First Rizzoll and Isles , now your taking away Major Crimes too. These shows were the only reason that I watched TNT, there won’t be any reason to keep this channel saved in favorites anymore after January. This is a very big mistake and disappointment ! Please reconsider and keep Major Crimes on for more seasons !!!!!
Agree, agree, agree! Seems that anything halfway intelligent is being cancelled. I was disappointed when Rizzoli and Isles ended (how about R&I movie?); now Major Crimes. So disappointing. Nothing else worthwhile on TNT these days.
Love the show! Hate to see it end!!
Another brilliant piece of decision-making on TNT’s part. Cutting the head off of its line up in the hope that people will go and watch the other programs of the network. Well, rest assured guys that it won’t happen. We’re leaving with your best show and taking it with us to an other channel who will know how to treat with the respect it deserves. Have fun trying to keep your audience.
We are not giving up on Major Crimes just because TNT is crazy enough to cancel its top rated show. As the 2nd most watch scripted cable drama on TV, behind only “The Walking Dead”, it makes excellent business sense for another network or platform to take in on. The fans are determined to help find a new home for Major Crimes, and are confident that Warner Brothers knows that it has a high quality show to market. We invite everyone out there who enjoys Major Crimes, all 10 million of you, to join us in our fight. You can… Read more »
It’s incredible that a top rated show like Major Crimes is given the axe when they have continually rated well in all the stats. 10 million viewers weekly!! Who wouldn’t want that? TNT has decided to go another direction with their programming and it will defeat them. Nothing in their lineup does as well as Major Crimes so the question truly is….why?
We are not ready to move on – we have witnessed this whole back and forth from TNT for along while now – and canceling your best running show at this moment because you want a new direction – a edgier program -a younger audience-well that’s just stupid and doesn’t make sense . Maybe TNT should have better cancelled their relationship to their big boss Kevin Reilly. Well they will see how that will work out for them – losing a huge (10 millions in total ) huge viewership. That being said – we’re not giving up – we’re fighting… Read more »
I absolutely adore this show and have since the first episode of The Closer. The show tackles a variety of topics in each week’s murder while still adding a great deal of humor to the heavy topics. I love the relationships and dynamics that have been created on the show. The cast is amazing. TNT is concerned with edgier and darker themes: which is ironic that they canceled their number one rated show that happens to be about solving murders. Too many shows and networks are into a quick fix, but Major Crimes has proven year after year it is… Read more »
We love Major crimes and we ready to fight for are favorite show. #savemajorcrimes
Fans are not giving up. We are going to find a new home for our beloved show. We have coordinated social media and letter writing efforts to get it on a new network or streaming platform. A petition started on Change.org has already brought in almost 2000 signatures in less than 24 hours. Luckily for us, the team who brings us this dynamic show has already negotiated this path with Longmire. Netflix knows the quality of product to be expected and we have the #2 show/10 million weekly viewers on our side.
I smell a monetary reason for this cancellation. There is no reason a network would cancel it’s top rated show…oh yeah, I read the new leadership (??) wants shows produced ‘in house’ as those produced outside cost the network more money…always follow the money trail.
Leverage was canacelles now Major Crimes TNT has to be the worst network sooo many bad shows like the cappy librarians at least it’s thier last year. Stopped watching a long time ago
